This worked well: Fully ripe zucchini (semi hard skin, but soft enough to cut and eat, with ripe seeds), carrot, onion, all diced. With toona sinensis, lemon leaves, Szechuan pepper leaves and quince jam. Salt, tomato puré, chili, butter and olive oil. Everything goes into microwave to steam for 10 minutes. Served with basmati rice and freekeh (smoked whole durum wheat grain).

Someone at the makerspace last week asked how I seemingly know how to use every tool from sewing machines to soldering irons and lathes to lasers, and my reply was that my favourite thing to do is learn. Whenever people ask what I want to _do_ with a skill I’m learning I often have no response, I just love learning things to learn them and get good at them. I’ll definitely find uses later, but it’s not why I learn stuff.

Someone who will replace an artist or writer with AI because they can will absolutely also replace you if/when they can. With artists and writers all they were lacking was opportunity, not motive.
Ironically this is best described by a now seemingly lost-in-the-noise Reddit (?) post that has been taken by numerous others and passed off as their own:
“AI allow the wealthy to access skills while stripping skilled people of their ability to access wealth.”

CW: Canada, statistics, food insecurity rant
Hmm, back on this problem, about food insecurity in Canada seeming to be underreported...
If the number of people experiencing food insecurity went down between 2024 and 2025, why has the number of food bank users risen by 9% in the same time?
(Like, it would be strange to write down that a person isn't food-insecure because they use a food bank.)

My android email client apparently pushed some sort of update in the middle of the night that changed how and when it decides to make semi-quiet little "bingly-bingly-boop" noises, and I went from "my MUA makes no noise, ever" to getting 1-15 of those in any given minute.
It took a couple of hours to figure out what the fuck was doing it, because notification history claimed no new notifications were being issued.
And this was on the same device I use to lull myself to sleep with podcasts.

## Hate To Say It, But It’s All On Us Folks
Let me be quite frank about this. While the article identifies the causes of the general anger and frustration with our politicians seemingly doing nothing to help, it does not talk about the underlying economic reasons for our current malaise.
What must be realised is that govt (politicans of all persuasions but more direclty the incumbants) have 3 factions in their ears 24/7.
- The first is the businesses and corporations represented by lobbyists (both official and unofficial).
- The second is the *Bureaucracy* or the various govt deparments — but the more insistants are the PMO, Treasury and Foreign Affairs.
- The third is the *Electorate*, not so much the average punter as it is their votes. The loudest of these is the first - thay have money to splash, the right connections, power to exert, and are soley focused on increasing profits for the #Rentiers and #Owners.
Next comes the advice that comes from govt deparments which is presumed to be unvarnished and without bias — which is a myth of course, but they sound very trustworthy and knowledgeable to our politicians (who are generally out of their depth).
And we folks, the voters, are only in the govt’s ear through their *political advisers* (with skin in the game) and only once every elections but only as far as our vote and preferences go. Politicians will do their utmost to get those from you, until they’ve got it. So we only matter for about one month every three years (save for the occasional by-election).
After that, we’re all yelling into the void folks because the first and second most important groups as far as polies are concerned are tragic #EconomicRetionalists wedded to the #NeoLiberalEconomics *trickel down effect* that has gotten us into this mess.
Until our economic systems change, or if that seems an impossible task, until our govt start to push back against the economic advice they receive and put the punters first no matter what (that is, what we elect them to do after all), not only can we look forward to **more of the same** no matter who governs, but it will also only **get worse**. So get ready for *more anger*, *more frustration*, and inevitably *more violence* until our voting selections become different. It’s on us in #2028Elections ( just as #Trump is on voting USAens).
Good luck, and good night folks.

Streaming Video Drowns Itself By Flooding The Zone
I’m old enough to remember when it seemed like all of sudden, seemingly overnight, everyone owned a VHS machine. Sure, some owned a BetaMax, but VHS was the thing. Video rental shops popped up everywhere and we’d see our neighbors there more frequently than at the grocery store, browsing the titles.
There was an old barn at the far end of the town that had sat empty for ages on a narrow, overgrown with honeysuckle corner curve in my small country hometown for ages. In the age before pop-up stores became popular someone popped it open as a video store, creating one of the first congested traffic nightmares that town had ever seen as folks parked along both sides of the shoulderless curve to rent a video.
Whether it was the local mom and pop video rental shop or later the BlockBusters, the display racks were bulging with titles. You’d walk in and be overwhelmed with the choices. To a degree that was the point. Flood the zone with more possibilities than anyone could keep track of to keep customers coming back. There may have been a pony or two in there, but eventually you realized that most of what was on the shelves wasn’t worth your time or money and the off the road parking on the curve eased.
When the next big hit finally made it into stores, the curve got crowded again as the aisles would fill up again while folks browsed, waiting for someone to return what they were really after, endlessly reading and rereading plot descriptions on the backs of boxes, hoping they were next on the waiting list.
VHS tapes became disks. Then along came Netflix.
Once Netflix moved into the video rental by mail business everything changed and the pop-ups pooped out, the video rentals that had become prevalent in grocery stores, pharmacies, and just about any other store that had a smidgen of floor space to offer them faded, and eventually so too did the big chains. The honeysuckle eventually reclaimed it’s territory.
And then along came streaming and the zones really flooded.
If you browse any of the streaming websites or apps today it’s like walking into one of those extinct video stores. Title card after title card scroll by in a waterfall of numbing repetition, often with the same title repeated line after line, category after category, too often in a weird trend that some marketing maven landed on of changing the cover art, hoping to get your eyeballs to land on a new image. It’s the same flood the zone approach.
When you flood the zone, eventually those you hope to lure in tire of treading water and turn their attention elsewhere. It happens in every sphere of human commerce, politics, art, music, you name it. Too much of a good thing becomes a problem when everything is just, well too much.
Now that just about every streaming service offers the same titles with the same upsell it’s overwhelming to the point of overdone.
I took the above trip around a winding corner curve in my memory lane after seeing news that Netflix, the company that changed it all by first flooding mailboxes and then streaming is wading into trouble waters. According to that article “user engagement has stalled due to a lack of popular content.”
There are many factors, but in my view that translates into an overabundance of quantity, not enough quality. There are big changes afoot as Netflix has fired Dan Lin, the head of its film division, along with six percent of its employees.
Netflix isn’t alone. It’s always been a leader, and leaders falter and flounder just like the rest of the pack. I certainly can’t say any of its competitors are that much better, but to my mind Apple TV has put out the best quality this year. After the Paramount/Warner Brothers merger that resulted in Skydance, with its promise of more movies each year who knows what the future will yield. I doubt quality will be the result.
That said, we started watching the 4th season of The Diplomat last night on Netflix, and it’s excellent. So there are gems that occasionally surface.
As all of the streaming services try to offer more, whether that be sports, or gaming, or just more of what the algorithm says enough want, they actually end up providing less, because the quality can too easily get swallowed in the flood zone.
It’s a tough job to program. As someone who has programmed seasons for live theatres I know you miss as much or even more often as you hit. It’s easy to get trapped into a formula when you find success. I’ve been there. It’s much harder to understand when a successful formula begins to fade. But when you focus on producing more rather than producing better, it’s easy to become mediocre, or worse, boring.
Rising prices and ridiculously programmed ad insertions certainly don’t help Netflix or any of its competitors either. Eventually it all becomes as numbing as the waterfall of titles that scroll down screens, like all of those titles on all of those old video store shelves. What quality there is too easily gets lost, even with the hype of a new release, when viewers have to wade through a flood of content that all looks the same.

New Rumour Says Bungie Is Being Considered To Make Star Wars: Battlefront 3
Bungie has been struggling through a very rough period lately, having just recently announced new Destiny 2 plans, seemingly as a way of regaining some of the lustre it has lost. And now, there’s an interesting new rumour; Bungie might be in the running to make Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
AdvertisementsThe source of this report is the Quartermann gossip column in EGM #265, the special revival issue released digitally to Compendium backers on 9 October. Jeff Grubb of Game Mess Mornings read out the interesting snippet in the latest episode of the podcast, so full credit to him for the quotes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ladA0cCcOpA&t=1329s
According to the column and its mystery writer/s, Disney is keen on making a third entry in the newer version of the Star Wars: Battlefront franchise.
“According to what we, your intrepid rumormonger, has dug up, the suits at Lucasfilm have been aggressively deploying probe droids for a development partner to take on the task of creating a follow-up. So far, no one has fully stepped up, but yours truly is hearing two major game studios are circling the project like a couple of snowspeeders,” said the column, as reported by Grubb.
The first of the two studios is the least surprising; DICE, the same bunch who made the previous two Battlefront games.
But; “There is another. The Q-Mann hears that if the Force is not entrusted to DICE, it could land at none other than Halo, Destiny, and Marathon developer Bungie.”
The wording would seem to indicate that Battlefront 3 is not yet in development, but that it is being shopped around. Should Bungie end up getting the license, it could be a massive shake-up for both them and the Battlefront franchise. Despite all their ongoing issues, Bungie is still respected for their shooting gameplay and they have plenty of experience with multiplayer and live-service, albeit less successfully recently.
The Quartmann column has served up some concrete information in the past, alongside a few duds as well. So don’t take this as confirmation that Battlefront 3 is in the works.
The real question is why the hell it has taken this long. Battlefront 2 managed to sell 9 million copies in its first quarter after launching. In 2019, EA said Battlefront and Battlefront 2 had sold a combined 33 million copies, and in 2025, Battlefront 2 had a resurgence which was fuelled by Andor’s second season, fan campaigns for a sequel, and a steep Steam discount.
In other words, they aren’t exactly striking while the iron is hot. But this ties into recent comments from Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly, who said the company has become more flexible about which studios it accepts pitches from. Star Wars: Galactic Racer developer Fuse Games is one example of that broader approach, with Reilly suggesting future partnerships will continue to surprise fans. That leaves room for an unexpected developer to take on Battlefront, although he didn’t mention Bungie or the series specifically.
