I wanted to bring this sweet girl home from Brazil. But they told me she didn't count as a service animal, and so I couldn't bring her on the plane with me. 😭

Alas, I'm nearing the end of my jaguar trip to the Pantanal. It's been an extraordinary and exhausting two weeks and I've loved every single minute. Back to the city tomorrow, and then off on my flight back to the States.
This is the second trip I've taken with Sebastian and Rachel at catexpeditions.com and I've already booked them again for pumas in Patagonia this coming November. Can't speak highly enough of them.

#BorderWall Construction Triggers Tree Sit to Save Ancient #Arizona #Cottonwood

Contact: Russ McSpadden,LOCHIEL, Ariz.— "Protesters today climbed into an ancient cottonwood tree in Arizona’s #SanRafaelValley to stop the Trump administration from cutting it down for construction of two parallel 30-foot-tall border walls.
"The action comes after Department of Homeland Security contractors cut down three neighboring Fremont cottonwoods estimated to be 200 to 250 years old.
" 'Destroying these ancient cottonwoods is a death sentence for an entire ecosystem,' said Russ McSpadden, Southwest conservation advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity. 'These magnificent cottonwoods survived centuries, nourishing wildlife through floods and drought, only to be bulldozed for the Trump administration’s disastrous border wall. The San Rafael Valley is one of the most biologically rich landscapes in North America. It’s both a refuge and crucial corridor for #jaguars, #ocelots, #BlackBears, #pronghorn and hundreds of bird species.'
Today’s action is believed to be the first tree sit aimed at stopping U.S. border wall construction.
"The three cottonwoods cut down earlier this week stood along a rare stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border where mature trees once formed a #transboundary canopy. The trees provided nesting habitat, shade and shelter within an increasingly scarce riparian #ecosystem that supports hundreds of animal species. One #protester was arrested Monday while trying to protect those trees and nesting #MigratoryBirds .
"Federal officials said preconstruction surveys would be conducted during Arizona’s active #nesting season, but observers at the site reported that no surveys for nesting migratory birds were completed before the trees were destroyed.
"The area also contains prehistoric #ArchaeologicalSites that preserve evidence of thousands of years of #Indigenous presence in the borderlands. Ongoing construction threatens cultural resources that would be permanently lost if disturbed.
"The Department of Homeland Security is constructing the #BorderWall under authorities that waive dozens of the nation’s cornerstone environmental and cultural resource protection laws, allowing construction to proceed without reviews normally required under laws including the National Environmental Policy Act, the #EndangeredSpecies Act and the National #HistoricPreservation Act.
"In a letter sent today to the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Center called for an immediate halt to construction in the #Lochiel area. The letter urged the agencies to conduct comprehensive biological and cultural resource surveys, consult with Tribes with ancestral and cultural connections to the San Rafael Valley, protect the remaining ancient cottonwoods, and assess the ecological and cultural resources at risk."

During massive wildfires in the area in a few years ago, researchers saw the jaguars using the culverts under the roads for shelter against the fires. They subsequently convinced the local ranchers to put more culverts in just for the jaguars. The cats now use the culverts even just for shade in the middle of the day.

We were lucky to be able to watch a hunt yesterday. This big girl named Masala was hunting caimans in the river from up in the trees. Incredibly exciting to see her ply her trade. She was so blazingly fast what she took off, I'm surprised I got that shot. And yes, she got the caiman.

"Almost seven decades ago, the jaguar, or yaguareté as it is known in Argentina, had disappeared from the wetlands of Iberá due to hunting and habitat loss. However, the situation today is hopeful. In May 2026, National Parks confirmed the presence of more than 50 jaguars in the wild in this region, marking a milestone in the restoration of this species.
The Renaissance of the Jaguar in Iberá
The return of the jaguars makes Iberá a global reference for conservation. This pioneering effort in the reintroduction of jaguars shows the positive impact of well-executed conservation projects. Nonetheless, the challenge continues with the need to preserve genetic diversity and ensure peaceful coexistence with human communities.

In January 2025, there were at least 35 jaguars in the region; a year later, the figure exceeds 50 thanks to births in the natural environment and planned reintroductions. Although statistics may vary, the upward trend is clear, consolidating Iberá as a fertile refuge for this species.
The recovery project began in 2021 with the release of Mariua and her cubs in the Gran Parque Iberá. This effort started in 2012 with the creation of the Jaguar Reintroduction Center, where the animals learned to hunt and adapt with minimal human intervention.
The sustainability of the project is reinforced with births in the wild, as confirmed by the litter of three cubs reported in May 2024. This phenomenon marks the transition towards a self-sufficient population, where young jaguars achieve independence and natural dispersion.
The jaguar, being at the top of the food chain, plays a crucial role in the ecological balance of Iberá, influencing the dynamics of its prey and vegetation. The careful reintroduction of predators is seen by the United Nations Environment Programme as a means to restore degraded ecosystems.
The effort is not limited to jaguars. Iberá also hosts conservation programs for species like the giant otter and the red macaw, seeking to restore lost ecological interactions."
