  1. One of the problems I see with modern portrayals of old folk tales is that there is a tendency of turning into neat "packages" - one single, "definite" version of a story with a clear beginning and end for easy consumption of an audience that will not know the context of the original storytellers. The Brothers Grimm themselves were part of this trend, with their repeated "cleaning" of their fairy tales collection, but many of their successors hardly did better.

Real folk tales and real folklore is considerably messier, with countless variants and narratives mutating and merging into each other. A good example is the text I am currently translating, featuring a particular crumbling well in the #Aargau canton of #Switzerland . This well has an entire myth-cycle associated it, with variant tales in neighboring villages. These range from the Devil lurking down there as a treasure guardian, to the Wild Hunt, to a vast sunken Roman city. These tales are messy and confusing, but that's what makes them so fascinating to me.

In modern media and storytelling, the closest we come to this is #fanfiction . Published media - whether books, movies, or television/streaming series - have their own "canon" events and stories, and fans obsessing over canon. But fanfiction writers make all of this their own, and weave their own contradictory stories with their own lore out of this base - just like the oral folk storytellers of old.

even with all the money she is aware of how empty life is.
something a western author would hardly manage.

  3. "I'm looking for someone."
    "Who?" hissed the insect.
"Zaphod Beeblebrox," said Marvin, "he's over there."
The insect shook with rage. It could hardly speak.
"Then why did you ask me?"
"I just wanted something to talk to," said Marvin.
    "What!"
    "Pathetic, isn't it?"

  4. @bitinn Man, am I endlessly happy that I decided to go with more a Half-Life look for my game instead of more an Unreal look a year ago. It was a really close race between them.

Yes, UE1 is very pretty, but this man is the biggest dipshit in the games industry now.

Not that I'm a fan of Gabe Newell in any way, but the contrast could hardly be more striking.

  5. Please listen to me carefully; I beg you to heed my words. We can no longer endure the hunger, nor do we have the strength left to bear the sounds of bombardment. The level of fear and anxiety is overwhelming—there is no safety, no food, and no medicine We are afraid of everything. Worst of all, it seems that hardly anyone cares anymore; no donations or aid are reaching us Please, help us

  6. My home-hosted website is being hammered thousands of times an hour by a swarm of coordinated residential IP addresses that do not get used again the next next day but hit with a new batch of addresses the next day. The attack swarm does nothing other than a simple GET & that is it. What can be done? I do not see why one should play along with such coordinated nonsense. Blocking all IP addresses in the swarm would serve no purpose: they hardly any of them are re-used.

  7. Soon we’ll have frost, and sorrel is NOT hardy, so I just put on sweats to go out in the yard and pick a lot of it for soup.

  8. I have been following the work of #japanese #pianist Hiromi Uehara for years, but I have never come across a real time transcription of her improvisation.

  9. "RTFM (Read the f** manual)"

That's what people were told when they asked for help on newsgroups or forums even though their problem could be easily solved by looking it up in the documentation.

Today, the same people still can't be bothered to read instructions. And courtesy of our #AI overlords they don't have to. The chat bot will happily answer every last one of their questions.

So what happens to a society where no one reads instructions anymore? Where answers can be retrieved in seconds, but no one understands the underlying principles?

Somehow this reminds me of the European Middle Ages, where religious dogma ruled all of society: "Thou shallst not doubt the machine, lest you will be left behind!"

These days, in a strange mixture of genuine curiosity and pure spite, I find myself learning more than ever before. The questions, the confusion, being sidetracked, and finally the elation of knowing I have mastered something.

So, yeah, #RTFM is my new middle name now.

  10. I wonder... do they and others think blind folks and folks with low vision don't vote? Do they think people who rely on screen readers don't vote? Or notice? I think so. Urging them to make their content accessible HELPS THEM reach more people. So if you want him to win, help him grow his reach.

  13. I'm exasperated with Team Talarico on Bluesky ignoring all my requests & never including alt. text on their images or vids. It's exhausting making this request repeatedly. It'd help if a lot more folks asked, too, to compel their social media managers to NOTICE that we (voters) notice the omission.

  16. I see that the London Perl Workshop organisers have published a list of talks that will presented at the workshop. There's no schedule yet, but you can start to get an idea of the talks that you'd like to see.

  18. "I wrote a response to Adam Bonica and Jake Grumbach’s piece in The New Republic about all the problems with the [Democratic Party fundraising] system. While I don’t agree with every point, it’s a very valuable article and points toward at least two straightforward if challenging-to-implement reforms. But we also shouldn’t lose sight of what an amazing accomplishment and how incredibly needed Democratic small donor fundraising is. It is a genuinely mass-based, non-oligarch system of funding political campaigns at a time when the Supreme Court has given billionaire oligarchs free rein to buy campaigns and offices at scale."

  19. I had a weekend with colleagues in Köln a couple of weeks ago. Just enough to get a sense of a place, not enough to really explore.

So now Köln is on my shortlist of cities to visit. If only to spend a day exploring the underground stations of the Köln Stadtbahn.

  21. I'm glad Apple made a high-end version of the iPad mini but I do think there's a benefit to having a small, cheap tablet option still.

I was hoping they'd do iPad mini ($299, A18) and iPad Pro mini ($699, A20 Pro + OLED)

  22. I’ve joined #COST Action #HARPA, a European research network on #privacy in #AI systems, bringing together computer science, law, #HCI and psychology.

HARPA works in two directions: reducing the privacy risks AI creates, and using AI to build privacy tools people can understand and use.

Over four years, it will develop guidelines on usable privacy tools and explainable AI, a catalogue of privacy risk assessment methods, training materials, and an open repository.

I honestly can't remember the last time I bothered with print styles - not just for my own personal site, but any project. Probably 2008 or so.

  27. I am attending an #SOA (Society of Actuaries) conference. None of the countries listed, including India, China, Mexico, Brazil, has a fertility rate above 2. And people live longer. That is concerning.

    The keynote speaker says
We will have to learn to live with more risk.

    My personal opinion
We will have to learn to live with less.

    Not less risk. Less stuff.
