  2. Tunnels are fun, and Rotterdam has a great one for cycling, the Maastunnel - a recently renovated connection between the banks of the Nieuwe Maas. Another video from my cycle rides around the city last month:

  3. Continuing my series of clips from my rides around Rotterdam last month, here are two more bridges - Koninginnebrug and Willemsbrug - both with fully separated cycle infrastructure.

  4. Having spent nearly a week over in Rotterdam, I’m releasing clips from my rides that show some of my favourite parts and various bits of infrastructure - good and bad. The first two videos are out now - Coolsingel and Erasmusbrug - presented in real-time without comment so you can take a virtual ride!

  5. Anecdotal observation apropo of nothing...

During our recent hour rowing on the Serpentine, we were (I think) the only row boat amongst a busy lake of pedalos. But one of my photos from 2009 show that back then it was maybe nearer half-and-half.

Has leisure rowing fallen out of fashion?

  6. Important comments from Chris Whitty in his annual report on air pollution.

🚗 People idling petrol/diesel engines are "incredibly antisocial".

⚡ Electric vehicles still cause particulate pollution.

🚶‍♀️🚲 More walking and cycling is important and safer cycle lanes will "encourage" take-up.

🔥 "Eco" wood burners cause 450x more air pollution than gas central heating.

  7. ICYMI: Challenging the County Council over its installation of a chicane barrier on a wide path used to access a shared use route under 100m away, while using outdated legislation and without considering equality of access.

  8. More overgrowth and obstruction on an off-road shared use path reported. Why are these routes allowed to get into such a state? I haven't been this way for a while, but it's rarely properly clear.

    #Nuneaton #SharedUsePath

  9. Um... why does no-one cycle here (or walks for that matter)?

Large roundabout junction with the A45 and A452. "Quality" UK infrastructure on show here.

  10. Well, I was right to not hold my breath. #WarwickshireCountyCouncil have indeed cleared the overgrowth, but they've paid no attention to the potentially unlawful, outdated, and ultimately pointless barrier. No surprises there.

  11. I mentioned this earlier, but I'm putting it on the blog - a contender for Nuneaton's shortest and most pointless shared use path, and a new installation too!

  12. Didn't know this was happening! I read Lord of the Flies at school and it's stuck in my head ever since - it must have been good; I remember enjoying it! I'll have to read it again before the TV adaptation next year.

  13. This is one of the consequences of driving-first transport policies which do not give people viable, safe alternatives to driving. It's what happens when people are dependent on cars.

It's also what happens when people don't care and feel they can park where they like.

  14. Same old, same old for today's School Run - too many cars, drivers parking on pavements, corners, idling engines. The usual suspects (yes, I'm starting to recognise the vehicles and their entitled drivers) parking on "no parking" zig-zags accompanied by child-shaped no-parking free-standing signs.

They just don't care. And I overheard other adults and children commenting about it this time. It does seem others get annoyed by it.

  15. The problem of drivers parking where they shouldn't, identified in a children's book from 1964 - 58 years ago. When it comes to driver behaviour, nothing changes!

  16. Whatever happened to that pavement parking report that the last government supposedly had? The problem is endemic across the country. It needs to be stopped.

  17. The local Borough Council has proposed a new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle antisocial behaviour, and it references cycling. Fortunately though, a straight ban on town centre riding is not on the cards!

  18. Happy with that! Two Green councillors and Labour control for Nuneaton and Bedworth. Congratulations to all! Hopefully we can see a change in direction, and a bit more positivity from the the new Council.

  19. Typical comment from the motornormative Tories at #NBBCouncil where they cannot see the cross-cutting benefits from providing better cycling infrastructure, including health, wellbeing, environment - and yes, economic too.

So, we’ll carry on with too many cars and all their ills.

  20. Scrapping the planned new multistorey carpark would be a good start for cost saving. The town centre already has two MSCPs inside the ring-road and other surface level CPs. It's not that big a town + driving shouldn't be encouraged

  21. This is the leader of #NBBCouncil, Councillor Kris Wilson (Cons), demonstrating the typical outdated, anti-cycling attitude common to the local Tories. They are actively standing in the way of providing safer routes for vulnerable road users and enabling modal shift for local journeys.

  22. Last year they renamed of part of #Nuneaton's ring-road, formerly the Roanne Ringway, to Jubilee Way. Now Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council want to rename another traffic sewer, Coton Road, to King Charles Road.

Not only is this an ill-judged waste of money and time, massively inconveniencing residents and businesses whose addresses are affected (including themselves) but they don't even include the 'III' in the name!

    #NBBCouncil #KingCharlesIII #CotonRoad

  23. More local Tory councillors have shown their hostility to enabling modal shift and improving cycling infrastructure in a recent Borough Council Committee session, with comments that are ill-informed and untrue.

  24. The amount of #plastic tat being pushed at events attracting a crowd is abhorrent in its wastefulness. Think of the resources going into making, shipping this junk, and for what? To be played with for five minutes before being thrown away. Even worse those that have electronics in them. There's absolutely no need.

It puts a downer on events like #Nuneaton's #ChristmasLights switch-on this evening. The Council should prohibit it. But it won't. #NBBCouncil

  25. Another police outcome through today. This time, a rather put-out driver forced to stop as I crossed on my green phase, decided not to wait for his light and drove off through the red.

The driver accepted an offer to pay for, attend, and complete a driver awareness course as an alternative to fine+points or court.

  26. Got a #police outcome for this van #driver, reported for the absolutely ridiculous number of parcels stacked in their windscreen, seriously hampering their view of the road at the end of December last year.

A one-off educational awareness course was offered by #WarwickshirePolice, and completed at the driver's expense.
