  1. This Startup’s AI Designs Enzymes That Can Eat Plastic Waste

In a lab tucked away in an old gun factory in New Haven, Connecticut, a machine heated plastic waste to 536 degrees Fahrenheit and spat out gloopy strings of material that start to harden when they hit the air. This substance made of textiles and post-industrial scrap that were destined for a landfill will be ground to bits to create as much surface area as possible. Landfills are overflowing with plastic trash. Serial inventor Jonathan Rothberg’s Protein Evolution found a solution: using […]

  2. Polymer Editing Can Upcycle Waste Into Higher Performance Plastics

Adam Malin/ORNL, U.S. Dept. of Energy By editing the polymers of discarded plastics, chemists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have found a way to generate new macromolecules with more valuable properties than those of the starting material. Upcycling may help remedy the roughly 450 million tons of plastic discarded worldwide annually, of which only 9% gets recycled; the rest is incinerated or winds up in landfills, oceans or elsewhere……Continue […]

  3. 🍄 Nature's Plastic Cleanup Crew: Fungi Learning Our Language

In 2011, students discovered fungi that digest plastic without oxygen. Species like Pestalotiopsis microspora break polyurethane into simpler compounds. While full transformation remains rare, these organisms offer hope for biological solutions.

  4. Are we doing #FashionRevolutionWeek on masto? It would be remiss of me not to spread it here! Today I'm supposed to be photographing reclaimed fabrics and trims for the Sewing Lair's online shop but my support worker came early so I'm crocheting buttons I cut out of acrylic before I stopped making plastic jewellery. The buttons were cut out of all the dead spaces in the sheet so in a way it's not as bad? Ah who am I kidding.

I just realized I never showed the recycled plastic and reclaimed wooden beads bracelets I've made! I've also been making some skinny scrunchie bracelets out of silk. (They don't stretch.)

  5. Researchers at Rice University have developed a groundbreaking technique that utilizes plastic waste to create clean-burning hydrogen fuel. This innovation could address two major environmental issues: plastic pollution and the CO2 emissions associated with traditional hydrogen production.

  6. back in the early heyday of #plastics, the great conjecture was that it was just a matter of time until we found an easy, natural way to break down plastics and make them reusable.

I bought in—‌I made the scientific leap that let me follow that conjecture—‌that some bacteria or enzyme or process would be found soon for the #plasticwaste.

60 years of #BigChem promises and profit taking, with no discoveries—‌and those made even less likely by their lack of corporate responsibility..
