  1. This Startup’s AI Designs Enzymes That Can Eat Plastic Waste

In a lab tucked away in an old gun factory in New Haven, Connecticut, a machine heated plastic waste to 536 degrees Fahrenheit and spat out gloopy strings of material that start to harden when they hit the air. This substance made of textiles and post-industrial scrap that were destined for a landfill will be ground to bits to create as much surface area as possible. Landfills are overflowing with plastic trash. Serial inventor Jonathan Rothberg’s Protein Evolution found a solution: using […]

  2. Polymer Editing Can Upcycle Waste Into Higher Performance Plastics

Adam Malin/ORNL, U.S. Dept. of Energy By editing the polymers of discarded plastics, chemists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have found a way to generate new macromolecules with more valuable properties than those of the starting material. Upcycling may help remedy the roughly 450 million tons of plastic discarded worldwide annually, of which only 9% gets recycled; the rest is incinerated or winds up in landfills, oceans or elsewhere……Continue […]

  3. "Since the 1980s, Brett Christophers wrote recently in the LRB, ‘firms have made vast amounts of money by sending the rich world’s #waste to the global South’ – #hazardousWaste at first, joined more recently by discarded electronics, clothes and #plastics. Literal mountains of our rubbish are accumulating on the peripheries of cities such as Accra and Delhi. Waste, like wealth, is unevenly distributed."

  5. The amount of #plastic tat being pushed at events attracting a crowd is abhorrent in its wastefulness. Think of the resources going into making, shipping this junk, and for what? To be played with for five minutes before being thrown away. Even worse those that have electronics in them. There's absolutely no need.

It puts a downer on events like #Nuneaton's #ChristmasLights switch-on this evening. The Council should prohibit it. But it won't. #NBBCouncil
