“Councils across England are to be given more extensive powers to fine motorists who cause disruption by parking on the pavement.” This is a totally confusing cop out. Pavement parking is dangerous and obstructive and should be banned as it is in London and Scotland. #Parking #PavementParking

I wish #PavementParking was treated seriously elsewhere...
"Push to crackdown on obstructive parking in Reading"

Their suggestions don't include "make sure your new house has enough parking" or "don't buy a new car if you can't park it"
"✅ Here’s how you can help:
Leave at least 3 metres (10 feet) between parked cars on narrow roads.
Avoid parking opposite other vehicles on tight streets.
Never block driveways or junctions.
Don’t block pavements – it’s not just inconsiderate, it’s dangerous. People with pushchairs, wheelchairs, or mobility aids need clear paths to get around safely." -
It's unusual for #Hampshire #Police to be interested in #PavementParking:-
https://www.hampshirealert.co.uk/Alerts/A/317067
"During recent patrols in Beggarwood, we’ve seen cars parked in ways that could block emergency vehicles or force pedestrians into the road. It might seem harmless, but it can seriously delay emergency services when every second counts.
🚑🚒🚓 Fire engines, ambulances, and police vehicles need space to get through. If they can’t, lives could be at risk."

What's wrong with this picture?
Someone from the Orkney Islands Council roads department recently told me that #pavementparking is a matter for the police. You might expect someone in his position to know about the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019, and that OIC shamefully refused to enforce it and even turned down the offer of a traffic warden to help from Transport Scotland - because that was "an insult" apparently - but this isn't. Absolute clowns.

From GOV.UK today - oh to live in a country where #PavementParking wasn't allowed.
'The Highway Code'
'Change made:
Waiting and parking (238 to 252) – Updated rules 243 to clarify that drivers must not park anywhere the kerb has been lowered in Scotland.
Updated rule 244 to clarify that drivers must not park partially or wholly on the pavement in Scotland.' -
The selfishness of the SUV driver. #PavementParking

"Cracks in the pavement: England’s parking problem"
"For pedestrians, pavement parking is not just an inconvenience; it’s a safety hazard. Vehicles blocking footpaths force vulnerable road users - from children to elderly people - to step into traffic."
"When a car or lorry drives over a CatClaw, its weight exposes a sharp steel tube that quickly punctures the tyre"

Whatever happened to that pavement parking report that the last government supposedly had? The problem is endemic across the country. It needs to be stopped.

Glasgow pavement parking fines should start in October. Cars with 3 unpaid fines will be impounded and 12 new parking officers jobs have been advertised (should be 112 IMHO).

So it seems the parking wardens in #Edinburgh CAN actually ticket vehicles for parking on the pavement between the Museum and Potterrow — but choose only to do so during the festival.

Just watched a car ad showing a car driving freely through beautiful wild countryside. It should have shown the car parked on an urban pavement because that is where it's going to spend 95% of its time. In #Scotland pavement parking is against the law but neither drivers or local authorities care a damn. #pavementparking #pedestrians #wheelchairuser

However, this is a good development:
"Pavement parking powers needed now, councils urge"
https://www.local.gov.uk/about/news/pavement-parking-powers-needed-now-councils-urge
As you may know the government appears to have kicked the consultation on #PavementParking into the long and littered grass, despite the considerable evidence received about the problem.

'Edinburgh has become the first city in Scotland to enforce a ban on pavement parking.'

a delivery van parked on the pavement on O'Connell Street Sligo this morning, despite there being a space in a loading bay 10m away. What is the point of spending on town improvements if traffic law is not enforced? -
"We are also exploring a soft launch of enforcement"
So no effective pavement parking enforcement then☹️? #glasgow #pavementparking

@kim_harding
While in England, three years after the government's consultation on #PavementParking closed.... nothing.
Here's a commentary on that anniversary from Sustrans.
Government won't disturb the motor lobby, and I doubt the next (big or small c) conservative one will either.

@kim_harding Meanwhile in #Glasgow, the enforcement is being delayed. The Council hasn't even engaged a consultant to establish which footways will be exempt from the parking legislation, as the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 regrettably allows. #Edinburgh expects to have its pavement parking controls in place in January. Glasgow, who knows? For the time being it's pavement parking business as usual. #pavementparking

The chancellor announces more #PavementParking :-
'The chancellor said £450m would be allocated to the local authority housing fund to build an estimated 2,400 homes and announced a new permitted development right to convert any house into two flats as long as the exterior remains untouched.'
Converting family homes to flats at a time when people generally have 1 or more cars per adult but only enough space for 1 car to park could lead to problems.

on the #UK #Government #petitions website:-
'Introduce national restrictions on pavement parking.'
Needs 247 more people to sign for an official response.
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/642947
'Pavement parking affects everyone, but is especially dangerous for people with disabilities, including people with sight loss and wheelchair users, as well as parents with children, and older people'

Whilst I was out supporting the brilliant #SafeStreetsNow protest in #Leicester yesterday, my wife took this photo after tripping on this raised cover, luckily she was not injured. #PavementParking causes many issues including blocking access and destroying surfaces.
Note this afternoon passing the same spot the vehicle had left and the cover had slotted back into place.

@weewoo @bazzargh Unfortunately it takes more than people in wheelchairs being blocked by parked cars to get action from #GlasgowCity Council. This is my neighbour who has serious Parkinson's related mobility problems. I took this picture on #BurnfieldRoad several 100's of metres away just a few weeks ago. I had to help him up and down the kerb to get around the car on the pavement. The council was not interested. #pavementparking

Concrete bollards are currently being installed on #BurnfieldRoad near my house in Glasgow. At least this section of pavement will be #pavementparking free, but we have so many parking-occluded pavements to liberate. A welcome initiative though.

@kasilas @siobhanmcelduff @ccferrie @nonsequitur @robmckenna If they got extra points towards promotion for every "catch", they'd be a lot more vigilant

Incredibly tiny pavement for pedestrians on this street, yet the Soul Cycles van still decided to take some of it by parking on it. Anyone in mobility scooter or Zimmer would be unable to pass.
You'd think a bike shop would be more concerned with obstructive parking, given how often it affects cyclists too, but no, they obviously don't care. Infuriating.
