A warm Friday #sculling on the Wear, a good session despite a majority sleep deprived crew. Last night was a little too warm and the bricks of my house seems to have soaked it all up.
Our normal session turning sharp at counts house before the piece.

Saturday morning #sculling on the Wear. Cool air but a beautiful sunny morning for the new routine. Warm up, our new exercise back up to elvet (dips, quarter, half, full slide all square blades then back and arms before feathering, half's at increasing rates) then steady back to the pool, repeat before a heads pace piece back up. Our piece almost ended in tragedy for two kayakers on the wrong side of the river at the corner above elvet. Thankfully we stopped in time but it could have ended badly for these guys who had no clue about the rules of the river and no life jackets.
We've also agreed on our plans for the heads and despite the weather and near hypothermia last year we will celebrate December on the Tyne doing Rutherford head.

A beautiful Friday morning for a paddle in a single. Cool air but sunny and clear. We still need a lot more rain but the drop in temperature seems to be reducing the weed. A lot of fish jumping this morning and I saw the otter when heading back to the club. A stream of bubbles, and a glimpse against the bank just between the regatta start and the Durham cow.

I'd been slacking on rowing in favor of other stuff long enough that my calluses were ineffective, so I'm getting back into it with 10-20 minutes per day #rowing

Short and punchy outing in the quad this morning warmup down to the pool exercises back up to elvet then trying to take that into an easyrow back to counts house with a final heads pace piece back up and in. Some rain before and after but we stayed dry.

Saturday back in the quad, we replaced square blade rowing with a new exercise that combined breaking the drive phrase of the stroke into parts and square blading. A quiet morning with only a few boats joining us part way through our session. Beautiful cool air warming up with the threat of rain, but only the threat. Taking a bit of care as a couple of club members have come down with sickness recently after exposure to the water.

Someone was so focused on getting on the water and away from the midges this morning they forgot to start the session on their watch then confused the watch with exercises. About half of a 10km session this morning recorded. Low rate, all about feeling the catch then loading the blades. A beautiful morning, dodging the weed and enjoying the cooler air. We still need some more rain though, a lot.

Cooler morning with a light mist over the river. The slightly cooler conditions seem to be starting to resulting in a little less weed. Nobody around this morning, a lovely paddle just focusing on weight on my feet and balance. We should be back in the quad Friday next week for some square blade chaos.

Managed to capsize a quad at #rowing tonight. I was at bow (ugh) and we were practicing soft catches at front stops. Did a good one, and then we were in. I’m still not quite sure what happened. We were understandably a bit tentative after that.

Recovery #scullimg session on the Wear on a cool grey morning. No real effort, just focussed on technique and keeping out of the weeds. Managed right up until the end when I wrapped loads of weed around my left blad navigating into the landing. The weight made it almost impossible to lift the blades off the water and keep the boat balance. Great fun.

At stroke in the 8 today at #rowing. I mentioned to the cox that I’m fairly new to stroking and she said, “oh, I’ve heard all about your excellent ratio and timing”. I think my days of hiding in the meat locker may be over.
A bit tippy, so I wasn’t able to square as early as I’d like, but cox resssured me that it was because the bowside blades were coming forward at four different heights and was thus always down on stroke side.
Lots to think about and currently more stressful (especially as I’m a bowside rower by preference)

Monday and back out in the quad #sculling on the Wear. A beautiful morning, perfect temperature. Warm up, a half trip of square blades, a bit of work thenn back in. A decent outing after a quiet weekend, modfather at exhibition park on Friday and Sheffield yesterday.

I found myself at stroke in a 4- this evening. I’m usually safely hidden away in the middle of a boat when #rowing. I prefer bowside, so it’s always a bit harder for me to row on the stroke side, but both coaches went overboard to praise my steady recovery and ratio. More than once. They’ve also threatened to re-rig so the stroke seat is bowside. I fear they may have decided I have some latent talent in this regard. 🤷♀️
We were tippy too. Something to work on. Always something to work on.

She broke both the women’s #record (previously 86 days) and the men’s record (52 days), arriving in #Honolulu on July 4, 2026.
