  1. Monday #sculling on the Wear and a change of boat to try one of the "better" club racing quads. I was pretty happy with a session very similar to our regular outings but first time out in this boat. I'm pretty sure we would be faster but probably best not to change mid season. Another damp morning though and cooler again after yesterday sitting for a few hours in the sun. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  2. Durham city regatta in the rain. A very wet Saturday started with 4 hours on the safety boat at the finish line getting cold and wet. The afternoon brought a straight final against an H Tees boat who got a 12 second start on us. We closed but couldn't get that back over the regatta course. A solid row though and one we are happy with. Another 3 hours safety boat tomorrow although I hope to fit a run in first.

  3. Friday #sculling on the wear, last session before city regatta and we think we figured out who our opposition is tomorrow. Surprised to see them as I thought they would have been off to Nottingham, perhaps we are a warm up! #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  4. Monday morning #sculling on the Wear 4x Bluewater. A gorgeous morning and a little more water in the river. A double session with both regatta pieces feeling strong and fast. One more practice on Friday before city on Saturday. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  5. Saturday #sculling on the Wear. A stunning morning, cool air and sunshine. Our regular boat was off in York so we borrowed another quad. Not the best setup but it was good to be out on the river. One solid run along the minute stretch below Elver and one regatta piece before the river got too busy. Back in bluewater on Monday and racing next Saturday at Durham city regatta. This afternoon we have a landing and shallows to clear / deal with.

  6. Cut short this morning due to a steering issue, now sorted for the crew using the boat in York this weekend. A lovely morning though and quite busy with college crews out in the sunshine. #sculling #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  7. Giving my knee another days almost rest, at least #sculling doesn't seem to aggravate it. A little outing in a single focussed on a gentle catch and drive through to the finish. Low rate steady state. Joined on the return trip by a couple of St Leonard's boats out doing regatta practice. Cool, grey but dry. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  8. A sunny cool Monday #sculling on the Wear. Turning short top and bottom to get two regatta pieces in. Both very similar and not quite where we need to be, only one more weekend until Durham City regatta. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  9. Saturday #sculling on the wear missing our first trip, 4.5km a couple of regatta pieces. Our pace seemed off, something to work on Monday. Grey and cooler but the perfect start to the weekend. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  10. Thursday is Friday #sculling on the Wear a day early because working life or Banjo. Our usual weekday outing on a cool grey morning. Good progress all round. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  11. We are back out on Monday #sculling on the Wear. A slight mechanical on the steering foot resulted in a return to the boathouse for some pliers. Standard Monday after that, warm up, turned early at counts house, start, ten and fifty then steady through Elvet picking up counting strokes at baths bridge before a regatta piece, up and in. Cool but dry. The new blades are setup to match the rest of the crew. It's great knowing I'll not have to fight whoever keeps setting the club blades I use with 2cm of extra inboard. Feel well enough for a run!

  12. Another Monday #sculling on the Wear. Shorts didn't feel right at -2 degrees but we persevered. Normal trip and a half session. Warmup Dow to the pool, starts then a start and fifty stroke piece to Kingsgate. Counting strokes after Elvet and a regatta piece before cool down back to the clubhouse. A second off our regatta piece time and equalled our counting strokes record, down hill from here. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  13. A rather dreich Saturday morning #Sculling on the Wear in Bluewater (4x). A little late on the water as the other crew that use the boat had adjusted the steering, swapped over shoes and left the boat unsteerable. Club life. Exercises and steady rowing this morning, the outing had a hard finish at 9am due to other commitments.

  14. Thursday rather than Friday #Sculling on the Wear, 4x Bluewater. Our settled short trip and a half session, warm up. Starts, start and fifty, up to the regatta start. Regatta piece then counting strokes. Fastest regatta piece by some way and best count on counting strokes. Sometimes less is more.

  15. Monday late #sculling session on the Wear out in Bluewater 4x. Warm up, drills then a regatta course piece, easy down to the pool then a sprint back up to Kingsgate. Some good progress in our starts, less force, better technique and our rate is getting there. Cold air but a glorious morning, even the bonus of arriving back at the club just in time for the daytime rowers so we didn't need to take the boat off the water. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  16. Another Friday #sculling on the Wear. Sadly more lurgy in the quad so dropped into a single. Warmer but pretty wet, a better way to spend the morning than work. The swans seem to have moved downstream and have a new nest site. It's still less than a meter above the current water level though. Off to the doctor to get my annual inspection then work where our owner is onsite. Must remember to keep my tongue firmly between my teeth. #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  17. Monday #sculling on the Wear. Bright cool morning for a steady session with a few practice builds and rolling starts. A half day at work and sunshine, I've an interview this afternoon or might have headed to the beach. Another half day tomorrow for the boys 21st and a full day off Wednesday all in the week our owner is onsite. I couldn't have timed it better reducing the opportunities for me to ask him how the whole Trump things going.

  18. Saturday morning #sculling on the Wear 4x Bluewater. Stroke still had some grumbles from his back so an easier outing with only a few rolling starts to keep the pace up. Grey mist burning off as the outing progressed.

  19. Friday morning single #sculling on the Wear. A little grey and misty but a beautiful morning all the same. One of the swans seems to be getting aggressive again, possibly due to my poor line through Elvet. The tourist barge / prince bishops is up by the club rather than at its normal position next to the bridge and the missing landmark threw me.

  20. Another Monday morning #sculling on the Wear. Bright sunshine but cold at 2 degrees. Due to an injury I was on my own in a single although no Swan stress this morning or at least not mine. The flood on Friday seems to have disturbed the nest. I'll check tomorrow on my run but both swans were away from it this morning and less aggressive.
A glorious morning with only a couple of college boats out.

  21. A glorious cool Saturday morning #sculling on the Wear. The river was still high but rowable. Time flies and we are back into regatta training so a trip trying to figure out our start from last year then a regatta piece.

  22. Another Monday #sculling on the Wear. Out in a single as our boat is on top of a trailer with four college boats below it. A lovely morning and a decent session despite slide bites and being chased by the swan nesting at Elvet bridge.
Lights on but not really needed and cool but not cold on the water. Now to work :-/

  23. Saturday #sculling on the Wear. Warm up then a piece in three sections stepping the rate on each change. Feeling pretty solid and looking forward to next week. Menaced by swans at Elvet but otherwise uneventful. Perfect conditions, it's starting to feel like spring. One more practice Monday then boat loading on Thursday.

  24. Friday #sculling on the wear, warm up, 3km piece then counting strokes and in. Grey but still and dry morning. Perfect conditions and hopefully more of the same tomorrow. The pair of swan seem to be sorting out what was there nest sight last year.

  25. Another Monday #sculling on the Wear. Just about light enough for the outing. Birdsong, cool air but not cold. A light wind. Warmup backup to the clubhouse and down to baths bridge. Tired legs from my run yesterday but a solid outing.

  26. No otters this morning but a beautiful dry, still day for a final rehearsal for tomorrow. Warmup then heads piece back to the club, cool down and paddle in. Very busy with colleges fitting in a bit of pre-race practice. I hope to see none of them on the safety launch tomorrow.

  27. Saturday morning finally #sculling on the Wear. After a couple of weeks with too much water finally out on a cold but sunny morning. The club hosts one of the Durham motorcycle club this weekend and thankfully the weather has improved a little for the campers.

  28. Saturday back #sculling on the Wear. Strong flow and rising levels but we got out, warm up, exercises back up and down then a steady head piece then a half trip to cool down. We were the only boat risking Elvet which was just clear enough to get through with blades tucked in going downstream. The stream was really challenging, making steering and even feeling the rhythm hard with the blades on one side of the boat almost snatched from our hands while the other side needed work.
Next week should be Durham head although looking at the forecast I'm not sure it will be happening. At the moment we can get two boats into the water at a time. Running an event with 70-100 boats just wouldn't work.

  29. Another morning another half hour ut2 feet out on the #erg as the river is running too high. I would done parkrun after but I'm heading up to Druridge bay for a half tomorrow. Monday probably brings more erg with the threat of setting the ergs up on sliders.
    #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  30. Another #erg session as there was too much river in the river. Twice in a week is at least once too often. 35min Ut2 fingers crossed for a dry Saturday or it may be three sessions.

  31. Monday #sculling on the Wear. The river was up and rising with a decent stream on. Warm up half trip then builds down to Elvet and a piece in thirds to The pool and back. Light by the time we came back with a few colleges heading out without lights. Birdsong and light, shorts and tee shirts not far off. It did start raining as we came off, we had the best part.of the day.
    #rowers #rowersofmastodon

  32. A decent row at Durham Head, we were beaten by two composites but beat our own best time on the course. The day started damp but cleared up but never felt warm. The two hour session on the safety launch after our race was missing gloves.
