  1. Friday #sculling on the Wear. A cooler fresher morning on a cleaner river, first mist of the second half of the year. The rain during the week had brought the river back up to near ideal levels. The water no longer smells like it's been still too long. Still in Tee shirt and shorts but cool. No rowing or running this weekend as I'm off south of York for my wife's birthday. Swimming mostly although it looks a little cool.

  2. Monday and a gentle recovery UT2 #sculling session. Cooler and grey but dry. No hard work, just focusing on taking the exercises we have been doing into the stroke.

  3. A warm Friday #sculling on the Wear, a good session despite a majority sleep deprived crew. Last night was a little too warm and the bricks of my house seems to have soaked it all up.
Our normal session turning sharp at counts house before the piece.

  4. Monday #sculling on the Wear, 4x Bluewater. The air temperature was just below 10degrees but a beautiful bright morning. Our normal session and it's starting to come together although I definitely felt heavy legs.

  5. Saturday morning #sculling on the Wear. Cool air but a beautiful sunny morning for the new routine. Warm up, our new exercise back up to elvet (dips, quarter, half, full slide all square blades then back and arms before feathering, half's at increasing rates) then steady back to the pool, repeat before a heads pace piece back up. Our piece almost ended in tragedy for two kayakers on the wrong side of the river at the corner above elvet. Thankfully we stopped in time but it could have ended badly for these guys who had no clue about the rules of the river and no life jackets.
We've also agreed on our plans for the heads and despite the weather and near hypothermia last year we will celebrate December on the Tyne doing Rutherford head.

  6. A beautiful Friday morning for a paddle in a single. Cool air but sunny and clear. We still need a lot more rain but the drop in temperature seems to be reducing the weed. A lot of fish jumping this morning and I saw the otter when heading back to the club. A stream of bubbles, and a glimpse against the bank just between the regatta start and the Durham cow.

  7. Short and punchy outing in the quad this morning warmup down to the pool exercises back up to elvet then trying to take that into an easyrow back to counts house with a final heads pace piece back up and in. Some rain before and after but we stayed dry.

  8. Monday #sculling on the Wear. A cooler bright morning for a paddle. It's looking like another decent week although we really need some rain. The drizzle for a few hours past week has perked up the grass a little. The river is soup, didn't stop the swimmer just upstream from the club house this morning.

  9. Monday and back out in the quad #sculling on the Wear. A beautiful morning, perfect temperature. Warm up, a half trip of square blades, a bit of work thenn back in. A decent outing after a quiet weekend, modfather at exhibition park on Friday and Sheffield yesterday.

  10. Another beautiful morning #sculling on the Wear, as cool as the day is getting first thing, almost perfect conditions. The racecourse is becoming increasingly hazardous with weed and it's even starting to appear in places below elvet bridge. One paddle boarder a double and a couple of singles from st Leonard's getting their national championships practice in early before the heat.

  12. The Day Before the Championships

The 114th Irish Rowing Championships begin tomorrow at the National Rowing Centre in Inniscarra, and today Farran Woods was all trailers and trestles. Shells were stacked four high along the path, riggers half bolted on, blades leaning against gazebos from Shannon, Bann, Commercial and a dozen other clubs. A rower in a yellow bucket hat carried a single scull on her shoulder in one hand and a blade in the other, past a tractor waiting to get through. Down at the water a crew lifted an eight […]

  13. A gentle technical outing this morning in a single. Warm still and quite humid. The club caravan site is emptying and the racecourse green space is filling up for the big meeting / miners gala on Saturday. The club is closed as usual and I'll be otherwise occupied to avoid the mayhem.

  14. Back in Bluewater for a light recovery session to test bows runs. All good so far despite a near miss with a double who seemed to have some steering problems. Warm and muggy morning.

  15. A cool morning for July, my usual single is on a trailer for Tarn so I picked a slightly lighter boat. A gentle paddle after blood donation yesterday, Iron remains marginal possibly down to taking supplements just before exercise apparently. It had to be gentle as the shoes in the boat are in pieces and I did the outing feet out which is an interesting exercise in itself.

  16. A blowy morning on the Wear with the racecourse straight and minute reach both being hard work despite being at 90degrees to each other. Cool but dry and sunny. A morning of exercises and taking advantage of the conditions to get my blades high off the water and keep my balance. My knee is mostly ok sculling but taking the boat off the water I can feel a little reminder. #sculling #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  17. Bonus Saturday #sculling on the Wear on Bluewater 4x Slight change of plan, we are now travelling tomorrow so arranged a stand in steersman as our regular bow is still on the mend. A gorgeous morning again, later so a bit warmer. It feels good being back out in a bigger boat.

  18. Out before the storm this morning, thunder just as I was coming off the water and lightning driving home to get my washing in! A beautiful morning, cool enough but sunny.

  19. Too good a morning not to got #sculling on the Wear, perfect temperature, sunshine and still. Very quiet on the water but quite a few walkers and runners out earlier than normal to avoid the days heat.

  20. Monday #sculling on the Wear, a cooler start to the day than the last couple of days in Sheffield. I think we to the north of the really hot weather. A beautiful quiet morning, one thing I've become aware of, despite the green space there is a lot less bird song than along the stretch of the Don through Kelham.

  21. The planned quad outing with a sub was charged last minute but I got out in a single #sculling on the wear. A beautiful sunny morning, perfect conditions for a relaxing paddle. This afternoon we are off to Sheffield for the penultimate visit while our son has been studying there.

  22. Out single #sculling dodging a paddle boarder and the weed. Distracted by the kingfisher who was very active this morning I ran straight through the weed that has now fully recovered from getting trimmed and pulled for the regatta. A beautiful still morning with a glimpse of the otter at the turn above the clubhouse, I followed it round to just above the rugby pitch but lost it when I started worrying about the shallows. This morning was all about toes and seat bones, the nature was a bonus.

  23. Another Monday #sculling on the Wear. No traffic but the course bouys were still out. Cool and grey but perfect conditions for a single. Our race plans for the season have been dealt a blow with one crew member recovering from a fall and a couple of broken ribs. I suspect we will be out until the heads season now

  24. My watch die before I finished, probably another 900m past the club and back down again. I stayed below the bridge for my half trip to avoid the buoys and weed on the Pelaw bank. I think the safety launches will be busy at the regatta tomorrow and Sunday as the weed is quite "grabby". A beautiful warm morning promising good weather for the weekend. A couple of college crews were heading out along with I think the university women's eight possibly to practice on the course now it's set-up.
The swans and cygnets are now safely below the first weir so I'm not sure what I'll be doing on my volunteer slot. I guess I'll find out tonight. #sculling #rowing #rowersofmastodon

  25. Easy introduction back running this morning with a short 3km, aiming for 5km but nature called. The knee was fine. Followed up with a gentle paddle repeating some of the exercises from yesterday in a single. Missed the gravel but caught a tree pruning floating down the rover. Warm conditions, a little grey but the rain held off until I was washing the boat.

  26. A little late but yesterday was Hexham regatta, the forecast was wet but the morning was cool and grey but mostly dry. We lined up against Tyne club, had a decent row but they were the stronger boat and beat us by a length. Our time was significantly better than last year but slower than 2024, some figuring out to do for next year but we stick with our higher rate for Tarn Regatta.

  27. Cooler grey morning and a bit windy but there were still singles in the boat house so a pleasurable start to a Friday #sculling on the Wear. The river is a bit of a mess especially above the regatta start where it's being dredged with a temporary (I hope) island in the middle of the channel. The only other disturbance was the grass bothe sides of the racecourse being cut again ready for Durham regatta. First Hexham tomorrow with I think a record eight trailers loaded last night.

  28. I'm still nursing my knee and despite no issues on stairs or steps I decided to swap a run this evening with a row. A beautiful morning, after the storms yesterday the river was up at normal levels, easy boating on a cool sunny morning. The beach below the club is being cleared along with a section after the regatta start. I'm sure it will help on regatta day but at the moment it's pushed reeds and weed out making the area around the band stand a little hazardous. Swan and cygnets were heading down to the pool. I'm volunteering as swan herder on Saturday afternoon at the regatta.
