  17. Open Source Is Powered By Stochastic Confidence — Webmink In Draft

What has driven open source to become part of 75% of all software and drive nearly €100 bn of GDP in Europe?
👉 Reuse, yes. But that was always possible.
👉 Collaboration, definitely. But repositories existed for years before open source was coined in 1998.
👉 /The software freedom philosophy. Absolutely, but that went 15 years without triggering a software revolution.

I suggest it's something less measurable and observable — #developer #confidence — and that the effects involved are #stochastic, not deterministic

    the.webm.ink/open-source-is-po

The answer to #why #open #source #worked ultimately is a brew of factors that is hard to acknowledge for those with direct-causal minds – 👉 consensus on licenses,
    👉 confidence about IPR grants,
👉 upstream contribution enablement and more.

None of these factors alone is sufficient to trigger the network effect of open source development, reuse and collaboration. Neither is any factor alone sufficient to stop the effect if removed.

Rather, it is a matter of moving members of the fourth sector from a fog of #uncertainty to a point where they are #confident to #reuse, #improve, #contribute and #innovate

  22. Clarence Thomas accused of accepting luxury trips from billionaire Republican donor

For over twenty years, #Clarence #Thomas has accepted multiple luxury trips from #Harlan #Crow, a Republican real estate developer and #megadonor, according to a new ProPublica investigation.

Despite accepting these luxury trips for over two decades, Thomas has **not listed them on his financial disclosures**, according to the report

The report found that the conservative justice frequently travels internationally on Crow’s luxury 162ft yacht, often wearing custom polo shirts gifted by Crow to commemorate the trips which included scuba diving in Indonesia and a cruise in New Zealand.

The justice also frequently visits Crow’s private resort in the Adirondacks known as Camp Topridge. In addition to being served by private chefs, Thomas has mingled with top Republican executives at these retreats. In July 2017, Thomas was accompanied by “major #Republican #donors and one of the #leaders of the #American #Enterprise #Institute, a pro-business conservative think tank,” the investigation found.

  23. I read today how some #software engineers, #coders, #developers are being forced to use #AI in their work. They complain it is eroding their skills. That is often the case with almost any tool that is designed for speed rather than quality. The article makes a good case.

My questions are about AI and software defects, specifically:

    1. Do AI tools contribute to better quality software requirements in any way?

    2. Does using #AI add defects to the code? If yes, more or fewer than a skilled engineer? More or fewer defects than reused code of any type?

    3. Is AI being used to select, plan, or execute the suite of testing procedures appropriate for the software (at any level, i.e., component, unit, or system)? I know this can be a challenge, even for skilled test engineers, because there are so many kinds of tests and tools involved.

Defects can be added or found at any stage of software development. No software of more than trivial complexity is defect free, but good software engineering practice helps drive them out. The earlier they are found, the easier and cheaper they are to correct. The cost of fixing defects late in development can be 100x greater.

  24. Revealed: far-right figures try to create white nationalist ‘haven’ in Kentucky

A venture fund and a real estate startup – both with links to far-right organizations – are promoting a residential development in rural Kentucky as a haven for fellow rightwingers.

The promoters have presented the planned development as an “aligned community” for rightwingers who want to “disappear from the cultural insanity of the broader country” and “spearhead the revival of the region”.

The move is the latest effort by the far-right to establish geographical enclaves, following in the footsteps of movements like the so-called “🔹American Redoubt🔹”, which encourages rightwingers to engage in 👉“political migration” to areas in the interior of the Pacific north-west.

But the underlying finances of land offerings associated with the “♦️Highland Rim Project♦️” (HRP) in Kentucky suggest that buyers will pay a steep premium for living in a remote ideological enclave, while the scheme’s promoters are set to collect tidy profits after making few apparent improvements to the land.

The development was announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, and in a special edition of the New Founding by 👎Joshua Abbotoy👎, who is managing director of venture fund❌ New Founding❌ and principal of real estate developer "Kentucky Ridge Runner LLC" according to company records.

  25. Forgotten Keepers of the Rio Grande Delta:

An industrial buildout on the southern tip of Texas is erasing the last traces of an ancient world that still won’t die...

Mancias, now a 70-year-old long-haired great-grandfather, knows secret stories that could never be written:

about the last free villages on the Rio Grande’s banks,
    about the massacres,
    about his people’s disguises and
about their flight, at last, in the 1940s to the Panhandle of Texas,
where he grew up picking cotton.

He knows about the old river with an ancient forest and enormous, teeming marshlands of which only glimpses remain.

He knows how much was lost and how quickly it happened.

He also knows that people don’t believe him.

He heard the same lines all his life:
that the original inhabitants of Texas are gone,
that his grandparents made up their stories,
that he was just a Mexican from Lubbock.

This society has been trying to get rid of Mancias’ people for 500 years.

It couldn’t kill them all, so it’s destroying the evidence that they ever existed.

That’s what Mancias sees as 100-ton bulldozers flatten the hills his ancestors camped on,
churn up their bones, and casually crush them into rubble,
removing these last traces of their world.

“They almost annihilated us, and that genocide continues,” Mancias said.

“To destroy the environment you have to destroy the people who protect it.”

He faces a formidable foe here at the last frontier for oil and gas on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

Every other major inlet from the Mississippi River west through Port Arthur, Houston, Freeport, Lavaca Bay, and Corpus Christi is already ringed with refineries, chemical plants, and terminals.

But at the farthest tip of Texas, the Rio Grande meets the Gulf between wildlife refuges,
a state park, and a majestic wilderness that still shelters endangered and little-known wildlife.

This is where Houston-based developer #NextDecade has begun constructing an $18 billion mega-project,
which it called the “largest greenfield energy project [financed] in U.S. history”
when it announced in 2023 that it had secured investors to proceed

  26. New company on #BayFarm island in #EastBay says they have created the “#NextGeneration” of #batteries that are safer than explosion prone #lithiumIon types and will revolutionize industries from small portable devices to #ElectricVehicles.

Many new #batteries use a liquid #lithium-ion core that can leak and combust, while #Alameda based #AnthroEnergy’s solid-state batteries use a patented technology to solidify the core. The developer claims the innovative tech creates a non-flammable, semi-solid battery with 35% more energy density than traditional batteries, and is resistant to leaking, warping and combustion.

They hope to get more investment into their #BayArea plant and begin production of half a million individual battery cells a year.

  28. ~~~ Be Not Measurable ~~~

If developer productivity should be measured at all, maybe it should be with sociograms that show how much actual collaboration happens and how it becomes reflected in the organization of the technology (Conway's Law enters the chat).

Which you bet is invasive shit that can feel like Big Brother is watching, regardless of the data being collected. But tech management seems to want to do it anyway, without thinking about it from our perspective at the sharp-end.

These complicated ways they want to measure Work As Imagined and Work As Prescribed become huuuuge compliance pressure on us. They care very little about Work As Done because it can't be predicted. It's very unmeasurable work, especially in SRE.

This is the same neoliberal thinking that we can quantify everything, make all Work measurable, so that only Good Training - not Expertise - is needed to do the Work. Hire lower paid or even robotic agents. Profit.

For instance, attributing Root Cause is fundamentally misaligned with how we need to understand the way things Succeed.

If we look at history and point to the downhill slope of failure, we're looking past what Resilience has already made this "failure" not be more of a failure than it is. So is it a failure at all?

When we measure success, we tend to measure multiple things and consider all kinds of abductive reasoning to point at all the various paths for success to happen.

In tech, we do the opposite for incidents, especially when only failures count. So if you are in an org viewing incidents as causal pathways to automate away, then maybe AI can replace those humans and the org will continue to suffer exactly the same kinds of incidents.

Well, the silver lining I guess is that AI can't replace what can't be measured.

  29. If you know me, you know I am an Invisible Internet Project [#I2P & @i2p] enthusiast. (See the geti2p.net/ #homepage.) I2P is similar to Tor, but differs in that _every_ client instance of the I2P software, while connected to the Internet, _participates in routing traffic_ around Internet blockages.

I just read diva.exchange/en/privacy/i2p-i and came across a link to a #SoftwareLibrary for the "SAM API" of I2P. In the past, I had thought the SAM #API cumbersome and clunky (perhaps this was due to the format of the documentation).

The diva.exchange/ team have created a #Typescript wrapper for the I2P SAM API. It seems that Diva Exchange uses #I2PD (the #CPlusPlus variety of the available I2P applications) rather than the reference #Java implementation.

**If you are affiliated with diva.exchange/, please reach out to the editors to include back-links to the I2P Homepage and #SourceCode repositories & documentation!** Even if the links are subtle and get overlooked by casual readers (attentive readers will cite the links additionally), the publicity gained by linking to the relevant I2P pages _should_ help the I2P to climb the ranks of search engine results. Mutual aid is a social duty — even on the Internet!
