"Threat actors with ties to China have been attributed to a novel campaign that compromised an ArcGIS system and turned it into a backdoor for more than a year.
The activity, per ReliaQuest, is the handiwork of a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group called Flax Typhoon, which is also tracked as Ethereal Panda and RedJuliett. According to the U.S. government, it's assessed to be a publicly-traded, Beijing-based company known as Integrity Technology Group.
"The group cleverly modified a geo-mapping application's Java server object extension (SOE) into a functioning web shell," the cybersecurity company said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "By gating access with a hardcoded key for exclusive control and embedding it in system backups, they achieved deep, long-term persistence that could survive a full system recovery.""

Just in time for #NonBinary Awareness Week, my new copy of Proud Pink Sky by nonbinary author @redfern arrived in the mail today. My wife and I read it late last year from the library and decided it was a book we wanted to own to reread. If you have an interest in alternate history (particularly of the #queer variety), check it out yourself! The hobby linguist in me also enjoyed picking up the argot scattered through it.

What Counts as Wild? On Doves, Junglefowl, and Birding Semantics in the Grenadines
While in Bequia, I saw, heard, and photographed African Collared-Doves. In St. Vincent, I encountered Eurasian Collared-Doves, both vocal and visible. In both cases, Merlin ID instantly recognised them—no disclaimers, no qualifiers. Just birds. Wild ones, apparently. What I didn’t see were Red Junglefowl. But I heard them. Their crowing echoed from hillsides and yards, and Merlin ID confidently returned “Red Junglefowl” as the match—no parenthetical warnings, no footnotes. Just Red […] -

I wrote this last year about why I love Eurovision and why I'm not watching and, well, it's still true and it still sucks. (It's also about how fascists steal communal joy.) https://j-dv.com/blog/post/eurovision-2025

In many ways these proposed rules are a real step forward, and we shouldn't lose sight of that. The obligation on railways to make tickets available to platforms on fair terms will help create the conditions for better more comprehensive ticketing platforms to emerge. It is likely that this will make it easier to find and purchase tickets. Furthermore, it will be *possible* to travel on many more journeys with rights than before. That’s good! But, it still doesn’t *guarantee* rights for all journeys and it comes with unnecessary conditions that limit passengers and can lead to absurd situations.
Rights should not be tied to how or where you bought your tickets. That provision needs to be dropped from the proposal for it to really deliver for passengers.

What does the EU’s proposal for rail passengers mean in practice? I live in Barcelona (where my partner is from) and I frequently travel to the Netherlands (where I am from) to visit family. A typical EU story! And of course, I want to take the train because it’s more comfortable and more sustainable. So would the newly proposed rules help me? Sometimes yes, but with caveats, and not always…

Petty complaint (everyone's favorite, right?): The Spanish government's online identification app is called `cl@ve movil`. My usual way of accessing apps on my phone is to type in their name. Typing in `cla` does *not* bring up the cl@ve app. I forget this every time. Branding it with an @ is fine but, using that in the app name is very mildly annoying. (I told you this was a petty complaint).
Semi-related: I have been considering switching from android to @calyxos but, is there a way to check before hand whether apps like cl@ve movil and my bank will still work? I don't have a good sense of what parts of the os these kinds of things do / don't rely on.

I have for a while been a bit bummed that I would never get to see Angelus Novus in person. As a child I lived right next to the Israel Museum and went frequently, but of course I didn't know about @WalterBenjamin. And now there is no way am I setting foot in Israel again—barring some fundamental, and sadly increasingly unlikely, changes. And now this! Well, I guess at least I don't have to be tempted to go visit the U.S.?

This is absolutely hilarious … or at least, is absolutely hilarious if you are familiar with the world of classical musicians. I don't know how well it translates outside of that. Probably still hilarious.

This is the end of Benjamin’s “On the Concept of History”. Tomorrow we start tooting out his “Critique of Violence”. A good time to start following!

In typical n+1 fashion I seem to have acquired another bicycle. I found it on the ground with broken spokes, stripped saddle, flat tires, bent chain guard, and no lock. So I left note with my phone number and took it home to keep it from the scrap metal recyclers. No one has contacted me so I guess it's now on me to restore. It appears to be 1970s French; or, at least all of the components are French and from that era. In addition to the charming foil "Champion du Monde" decal on the seat tube the down tube has some faded cursive lettering that I think says "R"__"eulade" but I haven't been able to match that with any brand or model yet. I'll try reddit and some forums next, but if anyone here has ideas please let me know!

Coffeeneuring 7 of 7. Today we stopped for a morning a coffee on our way to see friends who live on the outskirts of the city. Because it would be a longer (and steeper) ride than our otherwise coffeeneurs my partner opted for her touring bike with its extra gears. I stubbornly (foolishly?) stuck to my city bike.

Still 0–0 here between #CEEuropa and FC Cartegena. We had the ball in the net early on but it was chalked off for hands in the build up. (I didn't see it but VAR did apparently.) It's a big game because winner leapfrogs to second in the table. So far we've definitely been on the front foot; hopefully they can make that count in th second half.
