Eric Holt-Giménez , Ph.D. es autor , conferencista , agroecólogo e investigador del sistema alimentario. Desde que comenzó su carrera en 1977, ha sido un firme defensor de los campesinos y un campeón del Movimiento Campesino a Campesino el Movimiento Campesino a Campesino ( ). El movimiento Campesino a Campesino (CaC) está dirigido por agricultores y busca aumentar los rendimientos, implementar métodos agrícolas innovadores y mejorar los medios de vida a través de la agricultura sostenible, tecnologías generadas por los agricultores y el conocimiento de agricultor a agricultor. Como explica Holt-Giménez, “Los movimientos sociales exitosos se forman integrando el activismo con los medios de vida. Estos movimientos integrados crean la presión social sostenida que produce la voluntad política, la clave para cambiar las estructuras que actualmente actúan contra la sostenibilidad ”. El movimiento CaC ahora se ha extendido por América Latina con cientos de miles de agricultores practicantes en más de una docena de países.
Después de que el altamente destructivo, huracán Mitch, azotara Centroamérica en 1998, Holt-Giménez investigó la resiliencia agroecológica de las granjas “sostenibles” frente a las “convencionales” en respuesta a desastres naturales. El estudio, que examinó 360 comunidades en Nicaragua, Honduras y Guatemala, encontró que “en promedio, las parcelas agroecológicas en fincas sostenibles tenían más tierra vegetal, mayor humedad del campo, más vegetación, menos erosión y menores pérdidas económicas después del huracán que las parcelas de control en granjas convencionales ". El final informe se publicó en Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment en 2001. También discutió estos hallazgos en su libro de 2009, Food Rebellions! Crisis and the Hunger for Justice , de la que fue coautor con Raj Patel y Annie Shattuck.
Después de pasar más de 25 años en México y Centroamérica, Holt-Giménez reconoció la necesidad de cambios en una escala más amplia. "Los pequeños agricultores y las comunidades urbanas desatendidas necesitan cambios en las políticas alimentarias nacionales y las reglas del comercio internacional para tener la oportunidad de luchar por sí mismos y construir medios de vida saludables y prósperos". Holt-Giménez regresó a los Estados Unidos con un profundo aprecio por los sistemas alimentarios locales. Pasó varios años enseñando antes de desempeñarse como Gerente de Programas para América Latina para el Centro de Información Bancaria (BIC) de 2004 a 2006. En junio de 2006, comenzó su puesto actual como Director Ejecutivo de Food First / Instituto de Políticas Alimentarias y de Desarrollo . Food First utiliza la academia y el análisis para resaltar la difícil situación de los campesinos y la agricultura campesina en todo el mundo. Fundada en 1975 por Joseph Collins y Frances Moore Lappé, Food First “imagina un mundo en el que todas las personas tengan acceso a alimentos saludables, producidos ecológicamente y culturalmente apropiados. Después de casi 40 años de análisis del sistema alimentario mundial, [Food First] sabe [s] que hacer realidad esta visión implica más que soluciones técnicas: requiere una transformación política ".
