Mate, "they" (us/we/you) are in the #dotcons for many and various reasons. Often #easeofuse is one reason, another main one being it is default / stock on device.
Another little one is lack of public awareness of replacement #floss software/apps/systems.However, I believe a primary reason being that most folks just don't care. They just want their shit to work. [End]

The 4 opens
Published Date 10/19/15 9:38 PM
The #dotcon can not be fixed, the #fashernistas who keep flocking to new “ethical’ish” ones are a problem not a solution.
The #4opens:
Are a simple way to judge the value of a “alt/grassroots” tech project.
Open data – is the basic part of a project https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_data with out this open they cannot work.
Open source – as in “free software” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software this keeps development healthy by increasing interconnectedness and bringing in serendipity. The Open licences are the “lock” that keep the first two in place, what we have ain’t perfect but they do expand the area of “trust” that a project needs to work, creative commons is a start here.
Open “industrial” standards – this is a little understand but core open, its what the open internet and WWW are built from. Here is an outline https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_standard
Open process – this is the most “nebulous” part, examples of the work flow would be wikis and activity streams. Projects are built on linking trust networks so open process is the “glue” that binds the links together. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Process

What we are saying is CloudFlare, as a USA-based #dotcon that is supposedly helping to combat #cyberattacks, but has in fact been serving somes sites that pirate content. Why might that be?
These websites are often designed to look like Russian websites but would a real Russian really allow their website to be mass surveilled by the worst USA MITM Attack (CloudFlare) the world has seen? We doubt it.
See #astroturf, #frontGroup or #controlledOpposition for more.

We were blocked by the monopolist #dotCon from reaching our subscribers.
SOLUTION: Operate our own sites from servers of the same dotCon that abused us.

Articles laud a particular team at a #dotCon for finding vulnerabilities in a #modem.
The funny thing is the #vulnerability appears to be in the #firmware and not the modem per se. The firmware is likely #propietary, so this is *not* not the great success story for the dotCon as the #securityTheatre-hungry talking heads may suggest.
Modems will be safer when they are fully #FOSS

Yes and no, we a seeing one-click solutions emerge to some difficult problems in the space.

Yes that sounds exciting. We think part of the reason it hasn't taken off might have to do with the #dotCon dominance, which may be waning.

Web02 refers to the growth and expansion of the World Wide Web during the late 1990s and early 2000s, as the web became more accessible and user-friendly, and was increasingly adopted for commercial purposes. This era saw the rise of #dotcon companies, characterized by the growth of social media, mobile devices, and cloud computing. The web had become increasingly interactive and interconnected, and has become a critical tool for communication, misinformation, social control and commerce.

Goodbye CloudFlare and other #dotCon-served instances who are cheating humanity. You will not be missed.

When people ask, "What is the worst that can happen from feeding <#dotCon> all my information?", say…
"Do you tell strangers everything about you and your movements?""No."
"Why?"
"Because they can and have been shown to use the information against you at any time, and you won't know about it."
-
POLL: If someone made 'downward-sloping', 'upside-down', and 'ban' variants of #dotCon icons, namely msoft, amazn, ggle, appl, spacx, fbook, cflare would you want your instance to include them?
PLEASE TAG your admin in your answer.
Thanks for taking part.

I think we face the usual problem of working on and implementing policy for yesterday's issues.
* We are coming out of ten years of Blockchain mess
* Now we are into #AI mess, the is no intelligence in the current round, only artificial writing.
Let's look at what actually matters
The original openweb had #4opens in this context #opendata is the issue we are talking about.
We then had 20 years of the #dotcons with #closeddata. Which you have talked about.
Coming out of this, we have an active openweb reboot happing with federation and opendata.
For example with #Mastodon, the #Fediverse, #bluesky and #Nosta which have grown from half a million to 10 to 15 million users over the last year. #WordPress building #ActivityPub support for a quarter of the internet and #Failbook's #threads.
You are seeing a different world back to #opendata, if you run a mastodon instance you will have a large part of the content of the Fediverse sitting in your database in plan text....
Take this into account with policy and regulation please

The #dotCons are of course set to fail, but what is the pivot towards, and what are they taking away from us while blaming "#inflation" (and #misallocation) they instigated. We assert #TheFed and #centralBanks are a scam. See their #assetPurchases during #covid. The result: those who support the pivot to a neofeudal #corporateState are rewarded by the #MoneyPrinter. Those who resist are attacked and refused the cash infusion.
The challenge will be to die with ones soul.

Am kinda not surprised that the reach of my posts on the #dotcons is getting close to nothing, though am still seeing the ideas echoed back in the #mainstreaming, so something must be getting through.
The conversations am having on the #openweb are much better, but not without their #geekproblems good problem to have I suppose. -
We have been using the turm #dotcons for more than the last ten years to talk about the issue in the #mainstreming texh, the recent hashtag #enshitification is a synonym for the original idea long used Idea.

@jeffjarvis all the #dotcons are not the good guys, we need a reboot of the #openweb to find some good guys https://hamishcampbell.com/?s=dotcons you can see this path in the #activertypub world, we need to step away from the #mainstreaming mess, now there is a growing space to step too #KISS

Its interesting that very little has changed, this is my blog from 10 years ago https://web.archive.org/web/20070617230552/http://hamishcampbell.com:80/
Currently exactly the projects I was talking about then are being #rebooted and am trying to use them as I did then. Will we have the same issues and problems?

We really like XMPP.It takes a bit of effort to set someone up. Reminds us of email back in the 90s before the #dotcons took it over.
The #gamechanger that we have today that we didn't have in the 1990s is the #NewInternet (aka Tor/I2P).
Decentralised and permissionless *wink*

@Codeberg @hexaheximal
Well done!It looks like the #dotCons are going down the partisan path, with #DogCoinPusher doing the Fox side and BlueSky, the CNN side. Togather they'll continue the old #divideAndRule, bi-partisan model. Toxic. Time to move to federated.
If interested, here's a fediverse icon (and repo) anyone may use (and/or mirror) on Codeberg :) Its more accurate to say Fediverse over Mastodon.

We are winning because people are moving out from copying #dotcons an example https://wedistribute.org/2024/07/neodb-review-culture/ this move needs to become "native"
But we are losing as it's driven by #fahernistas who are pointless and spinless, so sell out in the end.

Let’s look at capitalism through the lens of #dotcons (a term that plays on “dot-coms” with a critical twist).
- Commercialization of the Internet: Capitalism drives the commercialization of the #openweb and internet, where profit motives override basic humanist considerations such as community, autonomy, privacy and basic democratic values. The term “#dotcons” is a critique of how the internet has been taken by commercial interests, turning it into a marketplace to push aside its “native” public good.
- Exploitation of people: Capitalist digital platforms exploit users’ data and metadata and attention for profit. Companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon collect vast amounts of personal data to sell targeted advertising and shape public behaver.
- Monopolization and Centralization: Capitalism tends to create monopolies or oligopolies, as the most evil companies buy out competitors and dominate markets. Today, a few large companies control significant portions of the market, stifling competition and ending innovation.
- Surveillance Capitalism: The #fahernistas term Surveillance Capitalism coined by Shoshana Zuboff describes an economic system centred around the commodification of personal data to use to manipulate behaviour and generate profits, reinforcing capitalist dynamics.
- Erasing the Public: Capitalist logic erodes the public sphere by pushing profitable content over informative or educational material. Algorithms designed to maximize engagement promote sensationalist and emotionally charged content, contributing to misinformation and polarization. This diminishing of the commons is a detrimental path of capitalism on digital discourse.
- Short-termism and Innovation Stagnation: In pursuit of immediate profits, capitalist enterprises prioritize short-term gains over humanistic paths, long-term innovation and ecological sustainability. A focus on quick, lucrative projects rather than any groundbreaking or socially beneficial innovations.
- Digital Divide: Capitalism exacerbate inequalities, including the digital divide. Access to technology and the internet is dictated by market forces, leaving disadvantaged communities behind.
In summary, “capitalism is the logic of the #dotcons” shows how capitalist paths have shaped the #openweb into a landscape to prioritize profit over public good, leading to the current mess of exploitation, centralization, surveillance, and inequality.
We have made a mess of the #openweb, we can’t keep being “prats about this” please, let’s try something different #OMN

The mess WE have made with the #dotcons over the last 20 years is something we can't sleepwalk into agen. Reproducing the #dotcons as #FOSS will take us so far, we have now past that stage of this being useful for the #openweb and have to now experiment with #openweb native codebases.
To do this we have to think and work to mediate the #geekproblem and #fahernistas "common sense" #blocking
#makeinghistory #OMN #OGB #indymediaback are all coding project to do this.
Please #dontbeaprat, thanks.

The current path in “governance” of the #Fediverse is a few people and money, where other people live and create the value of our native #openweb path. This is oligarchy at best, if you think about this, is this what we won’t? How can we, actuary, tell what we won’t, if not what can we do about this?
A critical issue with #SocialWebFoundation is that they’re avoiding real change and challenge, which by default leads to a “safe path” of the commercialization of the #Fediverse. This #NGO path is about keeping a seat at the table, but history tells us it is always unproductive without engaging in deeper structural shifts.
The current lack of user and admin representation on the SWF board clearly signals elitism, which diminishes the collaborative, grassroots potential for native decentralized networks of “governance”. Which without this, we move to a corporate entrenchment rather than fostering the liberating potential of the #openweb we have spent the last 5 years building.
One potential solution is embracing #openprocess, backed by activism, as a way forward. While it may be an uncomfortable path for the wannabe establishment, this path is necessary to preserve the integrity of decentralized platforms and our reboot in the openweb space. Open governance and participatory, maintain transparency and avoid the top-down elitist structures currently being reinforced by the “common sense” #NGO default being imposed.
To start this conversation, we could actively push for deeper community engagement, cultivating dialogues around representation, and organizing inclusive spaces where server admins, users, and activists can voice concerns and meaningfully influence decision-making processes. However, a key challenge lies in whether it’s even worth pushing this path, as many within the establishment will block any understanding or discussion about the need for such structural shifts.
It’s worth reflecting on how many early #dotcons initially tried to be #openweb native, but found it impossible to reconcile with the profit-driven structures of dotcons. The same is happening now, and it’s important to ask: Can we forge a better path this time around? Clearly, the NGO-driven model isn’t the answer. Exploring frameworks like the #OGB (Open Governance Body) would provide a more transparent, accountable, and community-driven alternative, avoiding the pitfalls we’ve seen before.
You can find more details about the OGB here: Open Governance Body (OGB).
Question, where do you see the best opportunity to initiate these dialogues and get past the resistance to real change to walk the path we acturly are walking.
We need to compost, meany of the replies to these subjects as they often exemplify the #stupidindividualism that plagues conversations. Instead of engaging in collective, systemic thinking, people fall back on dismissive, reactionary attitudes: “I’ll wait and see,” or “If they mess up, I’ll just ignore them.” This approach sidesteps the responsibility we have to shape the #Fediverse and #openweb decentralized networks. It’s not about waiting for corporations like #Meta to make a move or some #NGO driven entity to fail, it’s about organizing from the ground up and mediating these incursions before they can set deep roots.
I use the hashtag #stupidindividualism as it illustrates what the “ignoring” means, that damage has already been done. Once corporate influence is in place, it’s harder to reclaim grassroots paths, which is why we need collective action now, not after bad decisions have been made. The “I’ll just ignore them if I don’t like it” mindset is dangerously passive, and has a very bad history. It’s not good to hope the right decisions will be made by those in power while reserving judgment until it’s too late.
The #fediverse was never meant to bow unquestioned to the corporate agenda or chase explosive growth at the expense of native paths. The focus needs to be on building a diverse, sustainable, and resilient ecosystem from the bottom up. In this we can’t afford to stand by, waiting for others to decide our fate, if we do, we’ll end up entangled in the same corporate mess the #openweb was originally meant to avoid. If you have any thought, the time to act on this was yesterday, not keeping watching from the sidelines.
Please try not to be a prat about this, thanks.

Talking about trust and power in networks
A. on the subject of “security” we have a #open policy of not trusting ANY client server security at all, so this should only be done #4opens as far as possible and having limited trust in #p2p security, even though we use this, because of the insecurity of the undelighting syteams it runs on, mostly old outdated phones, built as blobs by #dotcons this simple approach gets round much of the current thinking of technical “security” ie. the is almost non at a normal use level and little real […]
