  1. What happened over the last ten years on our Fediverse path

The first steps were good. #Socialhub emerged as a genuinely grassroots space, shaped to maintain the integrity of the #activertypub native reboot. It grew directly out of the #activertypub affinity group itself - rooted in lived practice rather than imposed structure. So what motivated this native path? The current #openweb reboot wasn’t exactly planned - it was, in many ways, serendipitous. During the #WC3 process, the usual mainstream players were largely absent. That gap created space […]

  6. Thinking about data and metadata

This matters, on a positive note, the progressive world of technology has transformed our lives, enhancing, health and well-being. Yet, within this there are meany challenges, one is any working sustainable management of digital data. With rapid technological advancement, we need to better address lifelong data redundancy, storage, and preservation is needed, especially as decentralized systems reshape the way we share and store information. Recent discussions have highlighted the […]

  7. In tech, what matters and what is dangerous

The influx of #mainstreaming brings many non-native, focuses into our growing shared alt spaces. When we embed content, most of these will be better handled as external resources. Let’s keep the core simple: #KISS and #4opens. One of the strongest of these is money, it is a dangerous subject for #openweb projects. It’s way too often the root of corruption and co-option, so it’s best to keep financial aspects as external applications and simply link to them. And remember that words are […]

  8. The importance of words and ideology

We need to think of how words shape our thoughts, and how common understandings of these words are essential for any coherent and effective communication. Ideologies form the basis of all thinking, whether unspoken and #mainstreaming or articulated and minority. The challenge is to #KISS transition creative minority ideologies to the less working mainstreaming thinking. There is a plan: Using Common Hashtags and Syndication To achieve this transition, we need to use common hashtags and […]

  9. The tech world spans from grassroots innovation to mainstream integration, and nestled within this spectrum is #Socialhub, initially a grassroots haven rooted in the activertypub framework. Its evolution from #activertypub signifies a unique approach in tech.

    The
#openweb reboot emerged fortuitously during #WC3, with alternative voices shaping its definition due to the absence of mainstream stakeholders. This atypical path was advantageous for the community's progression.

Initially thriving as a vibrant community hub, recent years have brought challenges. An influx of individuals without a 'native'
#openweb view, driven by Twitter immigrants and Fediverse expansion, led to a divergence from the original focus, creating both opportunities and complexities.

A pronounced shift towards tech has overshadowed the necessary social aspects, causing a reduction in the core social-oriented crew. This imbalance mirrors the WC3 process reboot, necessitating a delicate balance between tech and social responsibilities.

The visible shift from community-driven space to an agenda-driven platform poses challenges, requiring a more democratic approach to reconcile these shifts.

Grassroots initiatives are inherently messy, distinguishing their authenticity.

Constructive feedback is crucial for improving the FEP process, which often experiences a 'three steps forward, three steps back' pattern in activism. The need for legitimacy within FEP involves social explanations and wider community buy-in.

Transparent, inclusive processes are crucial, as both FEP and W3C currently lack transparency, risking being sidelined without community involvement.

Activism rooted in history offers lessons to prevent continued ignorance towards these processes, emphasizing the importance of wider social engagement and transparent processes for tech communities like Socialhub.

  11. To note for people who are not familer with this way of looking at the world, the ansear to the question is always more alt grassroots vs less mainstreaming, of course this is always a balance so best not to get into a #ragecircle on this mess making.

#Socialhub originated as a grassroots alternative space specifically designed to maintain the integrity of the activertypub reboot within its inherent framework. Initially stemming from #activertypub itself, this forum embarked on this trajectory.

The emergence of the current #openweb reboot was more serendipitous than deliberate. Amidst the #WC3 proceedings, the absence of the typical mainstream participants allowed our alternative cohort to drive and solidify the definition through this "native" #4opens technological pathway an uncommon yet advantageous route for our community to follow.

Socialhub fostered a genuine and thriving community. The pinnacle of this community's strength was witnessed during the outreach efforts to the EU within the Fediverse. However, recent years have brought challenges; the influx of individuals without a "native" #openweb view has led to a divergence from our initial focus, primarily due to the significant impact of Twitter immigrants and the expansion of the Fediverse. This is good and bad, we have moved a long way from where we started, and have to make the best of this more messy community.

Over the last year we have had a (strong dogmatic) shift to the tech side of activertypub working and away from the social side that is needed for making a working #openweb reboot. In the forum we have had a reduction of the core crew, and an influx of the tech focused new members, this is likely a mirror in the expansion and the rebooting of the WC3 process and the two have have a balancing act of responsibility.

“To use the forum, you must agree to these terms with Petites Singularités, the company that runs the forum.” This has become more visible and the owner has a point of view and agenda, this is actually not a space for/by “community” in the sense it was originally sold… shifting from “serendipitous to deliberate” the solution to this shift/issue is likely not easy and involves democracy in some form.

Grassroots is always messy, that's how you can judge if its grassroots or NOT :)

Let’s try some constructive comments on this to improve the fep process.

What we have here is a classic activism 3 steps forward 3 steps back process, this is a recurring issue.

The ideas behind this are good, the outcome is questionable, and the process still needs work.

There is a current undeclared fight in the FEP → W3C email list, that is likely unresolvable which is a fine example of the fluffy spiky debate, the only good outcome from my prospective and likely socialhub is making the fep more Legitimacy (political) this is a post with ideas for process to help that happen.

To be a valid fep they should have a non-technical (social) explanation on why it’s needed and what are the social implications of this purely technical change.

As we are NOT only talking about technical points here, most are based on social ideas and have social outcomes for social networking. We need this wider buy in to make this process legitimate.

This process is simple and can be started by the original poster, then carried on by the wider community to build buy in and legitimacy.

Currently, both the fep and the W3C are too much black boxes to have any path to build buy in, thus are being ignored defacto.

This will likely continue without some basic activism as outlined above, the is much to learn from this long history of affective activism.

  14. #Socialhub was built as a grassroots alt space to keep the activertypub reboot “native” this forum started as #activertypub itself started “native” on this alt path.

The current #openweb reboot is accidental in that during the #WC3 process the normal #mainstreaming people did not turn up so we ended up with our alt crew pushing the definition through this “native” path in tech is unusual and a good path for us to keep to.

We had a real community on socialhub. The process of outreaching the Fediverse to the EU was likely the highlighting of this community. The last few years, with the twitter immigration and Fediverse expansion this community has had problems, a big influx of agenders has lead to a shift away from this "native" focus.

  15. Looking at the paths out of the current mess

We need an effective way of communicating that all value on the #fedivers is cultural, the tech itself is a product of this #openweb culture. The #activertypub speck is an accident of this culture not being swamped become the #mainstreaming was not interested at the time

We have an increasing number of funders pouring money down the drain in #fedivers tech, when the source of the value #openweb culture that created this new “commons” is swamped by the #mainstreaming agenda.

This #fediforum thing is going to be a hardcore invisible clash of cultures, all the #fashernitas who stood back from the #ActivertyPub push for the last 5 years are now flooding in, as are refugees from the encryptions mess. The language might be #fedvers BUT most of the people will not be. Let’s try and create focus, small steps.

#Mozfest Is on if you want to see posers, #fashernitas and general #NGO pointless. I did sign up but when the time came to log in I could not be bothered. I do use the browser, though.

We do need to express contempt for what a lot of the assumptions and agenda (often unspoken) our #NGO and #fashernitas crew push. Yes, it’s crap and pointless, so please say this, in most cases the “emperor’s” are not wearing any clothes. Express yourself, it’s needed.

The is going to be an increasing mix of #mainstreming people moving back to the #openweb we need much better tools and process to deal with the mess they bring with them as well as our own mess we have here. The is going to be a lot of prat’ish behaviour from both inside our #openweb movement and outside from the #dotcons we need a way to mediate this… as it’s obviously damage dressed up in #NGO clothing.

The problem with this negative circle is that it is self reinforcing, the prats, don’t like being pointed at as prats, and in reaction they dig deeper into prat’ish behaver. This damage is not helpful, we need fresh thinking, what do we do when “our” people act as prats. Ideas please?

The is a solution to this, the #OGB which mediates prat’ish behaver by democracy unite.openworlds.info/Open-Med

  16. #ActivityPub was an "accidental" #openweb reboot, it exists because the #dotcons turned up at the #wc3 meeting did not find anything useful for themselves so left the “weirdos” to get on with building a #4opens aproch. The “weirdos” manage to hold things together long enough to get the #activertypub standard through the open but burocratic process and pushed it out to the world.

  17. There are meany sub culture groups like #furrys #genderflued #infosec and #actavisam that bring their own working traditions.

Mastodon itself is a part of a wider network built to a #w3c standard called #activertypub which people call the #fedivere which itself is a #fashernist name for the #openweb

So a good way of talking about What we are experiencing is a move back to the #openweb and a stepping away from the lost 20 years trapped inside the #dotcons
