  1. A project like the #OMN does need to happen — and it’s harder than it should be.

We have already done this work.
#Undercurrents, #Indymedia, #Ruffcuts, #VisionOnTV weren’t theory projects - they were action media, built in lived struggle, with real risks, real trust, and real consequences.

#OMN isn’t a new idea, it’s a recomposition under worse conditions: more capture, more fear, more professionalisation, more #techshit in the way.

So the question isn’t “what’s the idea?”
It’s “how do we reboot a culture of action when trust has been eroded and replaced with fear driven safety theater?”

  2. @Palky55 after looking at the work we have done with #undercurrents #indymedia #ruffcuts #visionontv and now #OMN what would you suggest the path is to reboot this community of action based on #openweb and #affinity paths?

    It needs to happen,

  3. The History of visionOntv: What We Built, What We Lost, and Why It Matters Again

Looking back at the old TubeMogul stats - the archived page from 2011 - I had a jolt:18 million verified views, and when you added the torrent distribution, RSS syndication, video CDROM redistribution, and all the edge-case channels we seeded into, the total was closer to 34 million views. These were big numbers back then. All grassroots, all #KISS, all built on the early #openweb ethos, that number matters, not for vanity, rather, it showed proof-of-work for what a truly decentralized media […]

  4. web.archive.org/web/2011090904 Interesting was looking back at #visionontv, and we had 18 million views in 2011 and tying to remember it was like 34 million views when you addeded on all the torrent distributions and other sources.

When the Fediverse booted up we transferred the videos and content to #peertube but the was almost no support so it went offline, and we have not had the resources to bring it back yet. What a mess, come on guys, let's get it back online opencollective.com/open-media-

  5. The Open Media Network: Composting the Dead Systems

#FOSS and open source is always political. Let’s say that out loud, because it’s easy to forget. The very idea of open collaboration, of sharing code, ideas, and stories freely, was never a neutral stance. It was, and remains, a radical act of refusal. Refusal to privatize creativity. Refusal to turn cooperation into competition. Refusal to let the #deathcult of neoliberalism define what freedom means. From the early days of free software and the #4opens, to the #openweb and #Indymedia, […]

  6. The fall of the #VisionOnTV reboot based on #PeerTube was a loss for grassroots media and activist history.

Why? Because over the last ten years, many of our most spiky videos, that told the truth about power, protest, and real-world struggle - have been quietly erased from the #dotcons. YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook… one by one, the archives of resistance are disappearing under “content moderation” and algorithmic amnesia.

The #VisionOnTV project was different. It was a piece of the #openweb — a living, federated video commons built on #P2P infrastructure. It held stories that mattered: direct action, environmental defence, social movements, community struggles. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked — messy, transparent, alive.

Now it’s gone. And with it, a piece of our collective memory.

We need to reboot this path while the backups and fragments still exist. This is not nostalgia, more about preserving the roots of grassroots action so we can grow new ones. Without memory, there is no movement. Without archives, there is no accountability.

It’s time to dig, compost, and rebuild.

  7. What do you mean by “mainstreaming”?

At its core, #mainstreaming is how we, often unconsciously, uphold and reproduce the values of the dominant system. In our time, that system is #neoliberalism, or what I metaphorically call the #deathcult. It’s the air we breathe: shaping our politics, our economics, even the food we eat and how we relate to each other.

In activist terms, #mainstreaming too often means pushing this dominant worldview into alternative spaces, building careers and institutions that play progressive on the […]

  8. The Mess – If You Don’t Value Things, You Destroy Them

For roughly 200 years, we’ve lived inside - and many of us under - a single system: global capitalism. In this system, value is not measured by care, connection, or collective wellbeing, but by market logic, if something cannot be priced, scaled, or exploited within that logic, it is treated as waste. This has a brutal consequence, that, if you do not actively value alternatives, you will “accidentally” destroy them. This applies to technology, culture, nature, and community alike. In […]

  9. VisionOnTV: A Lost Future of Grassroots Video

Nearly 20 years ago, we built something radical. #VisionOnTV wasn’t just another platform, it was a #4opens movement. A bold attempt to break free from corporate-controlled media and give people the tools to create and share activist-driven, alternative television. We weren’t waiting for permission; we were building the future we wanted to see. Before #YouTube became the advertising surveillance monolith it is today, we had a different vision. One where video wasn’t just disposable […]

  10. Biography

I’ve been part of the #Fediverse since its earliest days, helping to build it from the ground up. The #OMN ran five instances for the first four years, supporting communities as they explored decentralized social spaces. I’ve organized events, facilitated discussions, and continuously worked to nurture the Fediverse’s growth as a living example of what the #openweb can be. You can explore more about this journey here. My involvement in grassroots media and open technology stretches […]

  11. The #OMN (Open Media Network), #visionontv, #OGB (Open Governance Body), and #IndyMediaBack are interconnected initiatives rooted in the principles of the #openweb, aiming to create a decentralized, community-driven digital ecosystem. These projects focus on transparency, inclusivity, and human-centered governance, countering the corporate-controlled #dotcons (like Meta, Google, and Amazon) that dominate the internet today.

  12. The billionaire problem, Elon Musk, tech oligarchs, and the #deathcult of wealth as a social path.

Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter is emblematic of a larger issue: the unchecked power of tech oligarchs. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill millionaires; they’re part of a nasty few, the class that operates above the ultra-wealthy, shaping politics, economies, and societies to their inadequacy. While the myth is pushed that billionaires are brilliant innovators who work harder than everyone else, the reality is darker. Their actions reflect a destructive #deathcult mentality, hoarding resources, manipulating public discourse, and pushing harmful ideologies for personal gain and standing.

Let’s start with Musk himself. People think of him as the “SpaceX and Tesla guy,” (this is not true, but that’s another story) his behaviour since acquiring Twitter reveals his priorities. Musk purchased the platform for $43 billion, not as a business investment, but as a tool for propaganda to consolidate power and influence politics. To platforming far-right politics, by amplify propaganda and undermine the thin remaining democratic paths. From boosting bots that inflate the appearance of support for far-right ideologies to reinstating accounts that push hate speech, these actions directly impact global politics.

This control of Twitter, and most importantly the chattering classes that stay in this #dotcons, has silenced the little dissent left. Bot-driven disinformation spreading far-right ideologies isn’t accidental; it’s strategic manipulation of public opinion to push agendas. Like supporting trump and authoritarianism, spending over $250 million on Trump’s election campaigns.

Musk isn’t alone, tech oligarchs like Bezos and Zuckerberg are equally complicit in reshaping society to benefit themselves, at the now clear expense of the public. Bezos’s quiet Influence, unlike #Musk, #Bezos operates in the shadows, Amazon spends millions lobbying US politicians to block antitrust laws and maintain monopolies to exploits workers and maximise profit. His strategy is quieter but no less harmful. #Zuckerberg’s free speech farce, with the ending of liberal fact-checking on #Facebook under the guise of “free speech.” The result? A flood of bots spreading hate speech, disinformation, and simple propaganda. By prioritising profit over public responsibility, this #dotcons becomes another breeding ground for extremism.

The #feudalistic influence of tech princes and oligarchs has consequences that go far beyond social media with political manipulation, global meddling. This is no longer just about wealth, it’s about shaping geopolitical realities. This is going to accelerate the current climate and resource chaos. So why do meany of us keep bowing? There is a persistence of the billionaire myth, the idea that they’re smarter, harder-working, and more deserving, which keeps #mainstreaming people from challenging this power. But it should be obvious these aren’t self-made geniuses, they’re nasty inadequate opportunists thriving in a broken system. This isn’t just about Musk or any of the other nasty few billionaires. It’s about rejecting the #deathcult of greed and exploitation our socialites are based on. The rise of billionaires as political actors isn’t inevitable, it’s a symptom of a path that values unrestrained profit over people.

The #OMN has a vision for something better, decentralised, open, and community-driven governance. A world where power is distributed, not hoarded by a handful of deranged oligarchs. The challenge is to make this vision a real path, and to turn our distaste for the status quo into action for this change and challenge.

  13. The 20th century was marked by significant technological and scientific advancements, alongside violent conflicts. As we move through the 21st century, the nature of these conflicts is shifting. The struggle is increasingly between humanity and nature, with dire consequences if we continue down our current path. Environmental degradation and climate change are no longer side effects, but central challenges that must be addressed. We need to find paths to move off the current paths, there are assumptions that are #blocking this needed move, one is in technology and its assumptions.

This #geekproblem has been inherited from past era’s in our computer architectures and the broader tech culture that has an ingrained concept of control. This control, hardcoded into systems and frameworks, poses an unspoken problem within many geek paths. Addressing this issue is crucial for understanding the broader implications and possibilities of grassroots #openweb tech activism as a path out of the current social and technical mess.

The Control paradigm in tech, from the foundations of computing, control has been a central theme. Systems are designed to operate under strict protocols, ensuring reliability, security, and efficiency. This paradigm, while effective in technological contexts, is inadvertently extend into social dynamics within tech communities. Control in tech is not just about managing systems; it also shapes interactions, hierarchies, and decision-making processes.

Unconscious participation in control structures, in tech communities, is unconsciously embedded in social groups that perpetuate this control paradigm. It’s essential to recognize that this isn’t a personal failing but a reflection of broader cultural trends. The challenge lies in identifying and addressing these unconscious patterns to foster more open, collaborative, and equitable environments.

The Keep It Simple, Stupid (#KISS) principle is a valuable tool for analysing generalist issues within our shared cultures. By simplifying complex problems, we can better understand the dynamics at play and develop more effective solutions. Applying the KISS principle to tech activism helps to demystify the control paradigm and its impact on our communities.

This blog is dedicated to exploring alternative paths that we can take to address these issues. By grassroots #openweb tech activism to mitigate the destructive patterns of control and build more sustainable and equitable paths. To promote decentralized technologies to empower people and communities, reducing reliance on centralized control structures.

#4opens emphasizes the importance of open-source software, to encourages collaboration, transparency, and shared ownership and community building. We need to fostering strong, inclusive communities that prioritize collective well-being over hierarchical control. We need to shift to environmental stewardship and ecological consciousness in our tech development and usage, recognizing the interconnectedness of human and environmental health in the tools we use.

This path requires a fundamental shift in how we approach technology and control. By embracing the #openweb and grassroots activism, we can create resilient, inclusive, and sustainable technological systems. This is not just a technical challenge but a cultural and ethical one.

  15. The Radical VisionOntv project has a rich and varied history spanning over a 15 years. Here's a timeline highlighting some key milestones and achievements:

Inception: The project began over 15 years ago with a vision to create an alternative media platform that prioritized grassroots reporting and activism over mainstream narratives. It initially focused on utilizing RSS and peer-to-peer technologies to distribute video content widely.

Mainstream Social Networks: Despite the project's focus on alternative media, it has also gained significant traction on mainstreaming #dotcons. With over 32 million video views across nine video streaming sites, including Undercurrents and Blip, VisionOntv has demonstrated its ability to reach diverse audiences.

Original Content Production: VisionOntv has produced over 1000 original video reports and studio shows, covering a wide range of topics and events in support of campaigning groups. This includes coverage of tech events, climate camps, and legal campaigns.

Training Workshops: The project has conducted nearly 100 free training workshops on grassroots video journalism, empowering people to become citizen journalists and contribute to the alternative media landscape.

Live Streaming: VisionOntv has facilitated live-streaming at conferences and events, providing real-time coverage and amplifying the voices of activists and organizers.

Technological Innovation: The project has been at the forefront of technological innovation, experimenting with solar-powered live edit TV shows at climate camps and embracing alternative hosting solutions to avoid reliance on mainstream platforms.

Community Engagement: VisionOntv has actively supported local campaigns, legal battles, and land reclamation efforts, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and highlighting issues that are often overlooked by #mainstreaming media.

Partnerships and Collaborations: The project has collaborated with a diverse range of organizations and initiatives.

Through its commitment to openness, grassroots activism, and technological innovation, the Radical #VisionOntv project has made significant contributions to the alternative media landscape, empowering communities, challenging mainstream narratives, and fostering dialogue and collaboration across diverse social movements.

  18. The world walks right past us looking the other way and takes the big bundle of bills from capitalism.

OK, had to close then open new accounts on #visionontv #peertube because of #spam, the spam is starting agen – there is an update that allows you to put new accounts on ask/moderation, we need to upgrade at some point to get this.

Interesting this is exactly the way our ten-year-old #OMN project handles flows as is the “new” moderation in #bluesky… if we don’t manage to go to the world, the world come to us… well more like the world walks right past us looking the other way and takes the big bundle of bills from capitalism.

This is normal, we are still doing needed work, but better would be good to 🙂

    #bluesky #Nostr #activertypub

They all share #4opens #openweb tech, so this is a win.

Where they differ is in the “culture” they come from and push.

#bluesky comes from surveillance capitalism, it’s from the #dotcons and has meany of the same assumptions, just “better”.

#Nostr comes from the #encryptionists and #bitcoin bro crew and suffers from being from this mess.

#activertypub is #openweb native and comes from the #4opens traditions the whole software world is actually built on.

    #KISS

The #KISS path is to simply bridge them all and let them cooperate, as they are all a part of the #openweb family.

The more complex and messy path is that some of them might not want to do this… OK now we get to the part where piss is likely signal rather than noise. Let’s draw a line, (a date is good) if they don’t bridge, we let loose the pee, liquid trickling in will short out their servers.

    Ending thought:

For a lot of our #fashernistas in our spaces, things only matter if they come from #mainstreaming this is obviously crap blinded behaver – but it’s hard to communicate why, likely they can’t see me 😉

    PS. I liked that joke.

  19. The project has been running for over ten years and operates with an #openprocess. Users can become mods after being involved for a period of time. The modding process is based on a clear project statement and encourages a respectful and inclusive community.

The #OMN is related to the #visionontv project, a grassroots media project that creates and distributes independent video content. The two projects share values and goals in promoting alternative media and challenging mainstream narratives.

  20. The "tragedy of the commons" is complex as it's a real thing inside capitalism, and we do all live inside capitalism, so it's a real thing. For it not to be a real thing, you will need to change the human world to live in a different economic system to capitalism - this is a challenge.

So functionally, it is a real thing that we encounter in most alternatives. Best to keep this in mind when building alternatives #KISS

    #OMN #indymediaback #OGB #visionontv etc :)

  21. @glennf it's a bit more complex than this, as it's a real thing inside capitalism, and we do all live inside capitalism so it's a real thing. For it not to be a real thing, you will need t change the human world to live in a different economic syteam to capitalism - this is a challenge.

So functualy it is a real thing that we encounter in most alternatives. best to keep this in mind when building alts #KISS

  22. The #OMN team has a proven track record of success in grassroots social tech projects, including their involvement with #UnderCurrents, #indymedia, #VisionOnTV, #LondonBoating, and others.

  23. History of copyleft activist grassroots video distribution

Hamish Campbell, the founder of #VisiononTV, began his journey into copyleft video through his project called #RoughCuts. In a recent interview, Campbell shared how RoughCuts started as one of the first copyleft video projects that encoded activist video in MPEG-1 format, an early standard format for video. He would burn CDs with an hour of different films and create a user interface using HTML to make it easy for people to watch them and screen them from their computers.

    The CDs were sold […]

  24. I have experience in training hundreds of grassroots journalists for alternative media outlets such as #Undercurrents, #Indymedia, #VisionOnTV and #OMN,

Many of these people have gone on to work in NGOs and mainstream media. This is not a problem in itself, but it has led to the lack of sustainability of alternative media structures and my energy to keep doing this.

  25. @Hamishcampbell we have been running #openweb projects like this at #undercurrents #visionontv and now #OMN for nearly 30 years.

These instances are some of the older on the #fediverse, so with this HUGE influx of new people, we need help to keep them online and well moderated.

Thanks to all the people who help in different ways.

    "don't drink from the mainstream"

  26. Been prodding this visionon.tv it's working pretty well, like the new default landing page, you get to see what people like from #undercurrents and #visionontv on the #openweb must bring back some old school expirence we can maybe learn from today.

  27. @strypey could talk about each of there projects/tech as we used them all over the years, with #offlinetv and #visionontv we were on the same mission on europen side of the atlantic... at the time we had come out of the foundation/#NGO funding root that was failing at #undercurrents and were trying the grassroots non funded root - the #indymedia modale.

  28. The #openweb is a space for both progressives and reactionary groups

One uncomfortable thing we need to address, calmly and constructively, is this: for the last decade, the right has been better at cooperating around #openweb media than the left. This isn’t because the right has better politics. It’s because they’ve been more pragmatic about infrastructure. While much of the left argued endlessly about identity, fashion, theory, tone, and purity, right-wing and reactionary groups quietly built linking ecosystems: shared blogs, cross-posting networks, […]
