Hamish Campbell is a long-time #openweb activist and technologist working on grassroots media and digital commons. He was involved in the early development of #Indymedia and continues this work through projects like the Open Media Network (#OMN), which works on how federated tools and community publishing supports public-interest media infrastructure. 6. What do you mean by “mainstreaming”? hamishcampbell.com/what-do-you It’s what happens when people take grassroots energy and repackage it in #NGO boxes or #dotcon business plans. The result? We end up feeding the monster we’re supposed to be fighting.

  7. The #Hashtags Tell a Story: Building Trust in a Messy World

We live in a time of crisis. Climate, community, communication, all are breaking down. Our tools and platforms no longer serve us. To make sense of this, we need to tell stories. And in the digital world, hashtags are one of the most powerful ways we do this. But our hashtags don’t just tag, they trace the roots of our problems, and signpost paths out. Each one is a seed. Together, they are a map.#dotcons – From #openweb to walled gardens. Once, the internet was a place of openness, […]

  11. What do you mean by “mainstreaming”?

At its core, #mainstreaming is how we, often unconsciously, uphold and reproduce the values of the dominant system. In our time, that system is #neoliberalism, or what I metaphorically call the #deathcult. It’s the air we breathe: shaping our politics, our economics, even the food we eat and how we relate to each other.

In activist terms, #mainstreaming too often means pushing this dominant worldview into alternative spaces, building careers and institutions that play progressive on the […]

  12. Linking isn’t just about navigation; it’s about connection, community, and championing the values that keep the #openweb alive. So, before you engage in criticism or fall back on #dotcon habits, take a moment to consider the broader context. And then, share that non-mainstream link—it matters more than you think.

  13. The 4 opens

    Published Date 10/19/15 9:38 PM

The #dotcon can not be fixed, the #fashernistas who keep flocking to new “ethical’ish” ones are a problem not a solution.

    The #4opens:

Are a simple way to judge the value of a “alt/grassroots” tech project.

Open data – is the basic part of a project en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_dat with out this open they cannot work.

Open source – as in “free software” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_sof this keeps development healthy by increasing interconnectedness and bringing in serendipity. The Open licences are the “lock” that keep the first two in place, what we have ain’t perfect but they do expand the area of “trust” that a project needs to work, creative commons is a start here.

Open “industrial” standards – this is a little understand but core open, its what the open internet and WWW are built from. Here is an outline en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_sta

Open process – this is the most “nebulous” part, examples of the work flow would be wikis and activity streams. Projects are built on linking trust networks so open process is the “glue” that binds the links together. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Process

  14. Slow-boil threats to #Fediverse.

One attack seems to involve random people spinning up instances they can't maintain and then they put them on #CAGEMAFIA-servers with reasoning like they can't afford the money to setup things properly, they are under attack, they are ill etc.

Then there are influencer-type accounts, and once they have a lot of followers they simply move them, with their followers to a #dotCon server.

These could legitimately be called #DotConCatFishing.

  15. @aktivismoEstasMiaLuo
They seem to be following thought processes similar to what we suggested at one stage. Ie. Do they own too many IP Addresses? Yes? Block.

Not a bad metric but IPv6 is setup to issue a psychotic numbers of #IPAddresses though, yes?

How many IPAddresses does Sucuri control?

Did you see the section on building your own list for a #dotcon? Might be useful as an addition. Apparenyly they haven't explored IBM and a couple others yet either.

    @funkybuddha

  16. @nonlinear

Interesting. We checked a while back and found that the three initial banks were being #MITMd by #CloudFlare and another #dotcon.

Allegedly, "#bitcoin-accepting" #banks are being targetted. Ie. banks that allowed people to move between bitcoin and #fiat are the ones having their confidence undermined. Apparently #ElizabethWarren is partly involved for an open letter that caused an initial run.

No doubt they will try to capitalise on all this by starting the #CBCD.

    #confidencTrick

  17. @ecosurrealism

What we are saying is CloudFlare, as a USA-based #dotcon that is supposedly helping to combat #cyberattacks, but has in fact been serving somes sites that pirate content. Why might that be?

These websites are often designed to look like Russian websites but would a real Russian really allow their website to be mass surveilled by the worst USA MITM Attack (CloudFlare) the world has seen? We doubt it.

    See #astroturf, #frontGroup or #controlledOpposition for more.

  18. We were blocked by the monopolist #dotCon from reaching our subscribers.

SOLUTION: Operate our own sites from servers of the same dotCon that abused us.

    #monopoly

  19. Articles laud a particular team at a #dotCon for finding vulnerabilities in a #modem.

The funny thing is the #vulnerability appears to be in the #firmware and not the modem per se. The firmware is likely #propietary, so this is *not* not the great success story for the dotCon as the #securityTheatre-hungry talking heads may suggest.

Modems will be safer when they are fully #FOSS

    #routerFreedom #modemFreedom #RCE #gooGlE #remoteCodeExecution

  20. @lispi314
That is the latest from their I2P implementation.

Re timing of the attack: its likely a response to being integrated into the #bitcoin network. First a #botFarm attack on #dotCon-based #messageBoards in an attemp to have I2Ps page banned. Then other network attacks followed, now zzz and their site is completely disappeared.

While #I2Pd exists and is a good, its targetted to the power user and lacks a native #torrenting client. Though, the last thing zzz did was release a standalone.

  21. @jeffcliff

How about a new icon for #dotCons. A #jackInTheBox with #daggers. Just change the colours to match the particular #dotCon you are talking about.

    Thanks for sharing.

Their website (peaceAndJusticeNetwork.ca) is pretty safe for TorBrowser, but we would suggest to them to never use #tinyURL.com because it goes through CloudFlare, which allows the #dotCon goliath to track people, or track what might be popular and/or not popular, and allows people to be targetted.

    Thanks for sharing.

Users seem to think #Rumble has has their back.

When we tell them, its a #surviellanceApparatus that blocks #internetAnonymisers, then it clicks for them, "Oh yeah, they wouldn't let me do XYZ until I gave them my name and contact details".

  31. CW: Assange-exposed Goo'Jigsaw sets target on Europe

    After #suppressing so-called anti-#Ukraine content in #Poland, the #dotcon will now target #Germany via #advertising.

    > "Using #ads as a vehicle to counter (…) #disinformation is pretty novel," said #BethGoldberg, Head of research and development at #Jigsaw. "We’re excited about the results."

Fedifrens, how might #vitality be drained by fake ads selling #narratives?

FYI, #uBlock is on #TorBrowser by default in #TailOS.

  32. Talking about grassroots media as a step away from the current #techshit

Hamish Campbell on the #openweb and rebooting indymedia Hamish Campbell, a veteran of radical media for more than 30 years, argues that mainstream technology and culture are failing us. The rise of the #dotcon platforms has commodified our lives: closed silos like #Facebook and #Instagram harvest our attention and data, locking us into systems that serve profit, not people. Attempts to build alternatives around an #encryptionist agenda have gone nowhere. As a result, the tech giants […]

  33. Web02 refers to the growth and expansion of the World Wide Web during the late 1990s and early 2000s, as the web became more accessible and user-friendly, and was increasingly adopted for commercial purposes. This era saw the rise of #dotcon companies, characterized by the growth of social media, mobile devices, and cloud computing. The web had become increasingly interactive and interconnected, and has become a critical tool for communication, misinformation, social control and commerce.

  35. When people ask, "What is the worst that can happen from feeding <#dotCon> all my information?", say…
"Do you tell strangers everything about you and your movements?"

    "No."

    "Why?"

"Because they can and have been shown to use the information against you at any time, and you won't know about it."

POLL: If someone made 'downward-sloping', 'upside-down', and 'ban' variants of #dotCon icons, namely msoft, amazn, ggle, appl, spacx, fbook, cflare would you want your instance to include them?

PLEASE TAG your admin in your answer.

    Thanks for taking part.

  37. @eric
Keep in mind whether you're enabling their #NetworkEffect. Ie. Why would someone want to K'verse if they can coast along on the #dotcon statusQuo, and K'Verse will yield?

Btw #criticalMass is 3.5% not 1-in-5. Its perfectly achieveable, if we organise.

Spam is always going to be there. Its part of learning. Also one persons spam is another persons understanding, another's source of 'lols', but always a manifestation of a truth.

  38. We know #CloudFlare's takeover of the internet is bad, but how bad is it really?

What percentage of banks in your area are CF'd?

You want a potential suiter to choose a resturant for a date but you don't want them to choose one that sends visitor data to the #dotCon. What to do?

Send them to this #CFFreeDirectory. It uses #OpenStreetMaps and puts CF businesses last — where they put you!

    Only on Tor, requires JS:

    Example:

  39. @koherecoWatchdog

Escaping #Microshaft is more hard than it should be.

Its bad enough that they serve #GriftHub, #LinkedIn and are a partner of the CDN giant, #Akamai.

The fact that they also effectively host #DuckDuckGo, should really raise an alarm for any thinking man, woman, child, duck, duck and flipping goose on the planet.

Maybe #DuckCoverRun ought be the colloquialism.

    Hi and welcome to Fedi,

Assuming this is a genuine acct of #ItsFOSS and not an impersonator, your website is Cloudflare (last we checked) tell us if/when you fix the problem and no longer use a CAGEFAM #dotCon. We'll be more likely to subscribe and use your site when good faith is shown.

    Cheers.

  41. #introduction

ShadowBanned on a #dotCon for talking about #JulianAssange and being against #regimeChange wars, #coupDeTat's, and speaking up against Australia's abusive #immigration system.

We support a #UBI, a Maximum Rental Income capped at the unemployment rate, #democracy and are *really* anti-fascist (ie. against the melding of govt and big business).

We came up with the word #CAGEFAM to describe the #digitalFascists (hint: the 'E' is the reason you left #TurdSite).

    We also do design.

  42. Here at the #InfosecInstitute we believe the single most secure thing we can do is send your data through #CloudFlare — and if you are lucky #CloudFront.

Its called #outsourcing, and it gives temporary safety.

  43. @witchescauldron
Yes, we passed the info to some of our esteemed fedizens at #kolektivaSocial that if they value their DMs, and saying no to their #dotCon algorithms, to think seriously about the fact that they're on a #CloudFlare instance.

Said that talking with admins may help, stating it may've been unintentional as many #ISPs can be lazy and automatically sacrifice clients to Cf.

The whole flat-earth "problem" was post-2016 #gaslighting to purge thousands of legitimate #alternativeNews publishers from the #privatePublicSquare.

They were only able to do that after a propaganda campaign, where they conflated so-called flat-earthers spreading #disinfo and "#fakeNews" with the #altMedia.

  45. @jeffcliff
    Hi Jeff,

It looks like they are just bringing everything under #dotCon control via #moneyPrinting and buying up everything that moves.

Also they don't need a killswitch when most of #theInternet is controlled by Cloudflare and other #militaryContractors like Amazon and Microsoft etc, all they need to do is use the access they have and blame it on China.

Are you able to provide sources on your above though.

But its untrue. Gab is #Cloudflare.

This was framed in relation to #Parler, which they identified as being attacked by #Amazon and #Apple, but Cloudflare is among the most #monopolistic and predatory in tech.
