The #hashtags are simple. They are a shorthand for different parts of the same social, political and technological mess - and for some of the ways we might start composting it.
#deathcult = neoliberalism: growth, competition, extraction, consumption and individualism treated as common sense.
#fashernista = fashion applied to social and political relations: following the latest language, agenda or institutional trend rather than looking at what actually works.
#openweb = the original ideals of the WWW and internet culture: open standards, decentralised publishing, linking, sharing and people making their own tools.
#closedweb = the move away from the open internet: proprietary networks, closed platforms and centralised control. It describes both the pre-internet closed networks and the post-#openweb world where the #dotcons grew.
#4opens = the open-source/FOSS tradition with the addition of transparent process: open data, open source, open standards and open process.
#encryptionists = the belief that more encryption is automatically the answer to social problems. Encryption is useful, but treating it as the solution to everything can become unthinking technological dogma.
#dotcons = the transition to a for-profit internet and the social relationships that came with it: users as products, platforms as owners, data as property and participation shaped around extraction.
#geekproblem = an old argument about free will and determinism, but also a cultural and social problem around technical culture. The “two cultures” discussion is a useful way into understanding it: technical expertise is valuable, but it is not the whole toolbox.
#techshit = part of the composting metaphor. Shit is not simply waste, it is part of an ecological cycle. Social and technological shit can be composted too: expose it, learn from it, keep what is useful and grow something better.
#techchurn = the technological outcome of the #geekproblem: endless cycles of new tools, platforms and architectures being treated as progress, even when they don't solve the underlying social problem.
#nothingnew = a deliberately polemical way of slowing and reversing #techchurn without becoming dogmatic. Before building another shiny new thing, ask whether we have actually seen this problem and solution before.
The hashtags are tools for thinking. They help us name patterns that otherwise disappear into the noise. And once we can name the pattern, we have a better chance of changing it.

Having a shared pool of hashtags is a way of creating social cohesion and action - a way for people to find each other and talk across #silos. It is a #DIY “search” system, but only if people actually use and share the language.
The #OMN use of hashtags is mostly #nothingnew. I take existing ideas, connect them to outcomes, and create shorthand for conversations that already exist. Examples:
#deathcult = neoliberalism, with the understanding of the real-world outcomes. The metaphor connects a political mindset with its consequences. The historical reference comes from the Irish potato famine - reminder of what happens when a mindset becomes #mainstreaming and millions of people are treated as expendable.
#Geekproblem = a critique of a strand of 20th-century modernism when technical thinking becomes dogmatic. The problem is not “geeks” or technology itself - there is a good side to modernism. The problem is losing the social nuance and turning everything into a technical problem.
#stupidindividualism = thinking about the balance between self and society. It is an outcome of the #deathcult and a symptom of the #geekproblem - the idea that everything can be reduced to isolated individuals instead of relationships and communities.

It’s simpler than people think. Look outside the current mess. There are huge bodies of human thought, practice, and lived experience from before the rise of the #deathcult. The answers don’t come from worshipping new tech, stronger markets, or smarter branding. They come from remembering what was deliberately buried.
That’s why projects like #OMN matter. We need living alternatives, not just critique. We need spaces where trust, openness, and collective action can grow in native soil instead of inside the poisoned logic of the #closedweb and endless commodification.
The first step out of the prison is recognising the walls were built by people — which means they can also be dismantled by people.
