  1. We need to stop worshipping a #deathcult

A path to do this is to step away from the #mainstreming mess. In 2024, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson. The prize recognised their work on how institutions shape prosperity, most famously through their book Why Nations Fail. The timing matters, it matters a lot. This award lands at exactly the moment we should be asking why Institutional Economics - the respectable face of #mainstreaming - has spent the last fifteen years […]

  2. Trust is the foundation of moderation in decentralised networks like the #OMN

In the world of decentralised, peer-to-peer, and federated networks, from the Fediverse to grassroots projects like the #OMN, moderation works differently. It's not a matter of top-down control or terms-of-service written by #process lawyers. Instead, the basic unit of moderation is trust - and this shifts everything we think of as "common sense". Yes, we need practical moderation tools - blocking, filtering, reporting, curation - the whole established toolkit. But more importantly, we need […]

  5. On being a prat in tech and social spaces (Yes, this is likely about you 😘)

From where I’m standing, a lot of people are being absolute prats when it comes to social and technological issues. That should be obvious… but clearly, it’s not. We’ve got two basic paths here: #Block everything you don’t like. Predictably, this just creates more prat-ish behaviour and pushes us all deeper into toxic bubbles. Ask questions. Grow. Listen. Respond. This reduces prat-ish behaviour — over time, maybe even composts it into something useful. Now, in the era of […]

  6. This is now #mainstreaming alt thinking hamishcampbell.com/?s=dotcons our #fashernestas are now #mainstreming this #techshit better late than never. BUT they all built their careers inside these paths, so please don't blindly trust these people, no matter how much sense they make. It's mess and mess making, what does a different path look like #OMN

  7. The rise of fascist ideologies

The path of #fascism is blighted by ignorance and the rejection of deeper meaning in life. Fascist leaders and their followers push overconfidence and assertive ignorance, using baseless claims to hold dominance and control. They push false displays of good qualities, such as exaggerated patriotism or faux moral superiority, rather than any real ability and experience. Fascist ideologies exploit the frustrations and insecurities of "lost" people, by offering them a sense of belonging and […]

  8. In the #liberal approach to politics and economic systems, they have an ambition to save the world, they champion progressive causes such as climate change mitigation, social justice, and human rights. Their strategy to mediate the current mess involves leveraging the existing political and economic systems to achieve these goals, believing that reforms lead to significant improvements without overthrowing the current structures.

We have “right” and “left” liberals, the right are blinded dogmatic worshippers of the #deathcult where the “left” uphold capitalist principles, regulated markets, private enterprise, and incremental reforms and are terrified of radical changes. At best, this creates a perception that they are trying to balance two inherently contradictory goals: preserving the status quo while also advocating for real progressive change.

Delusion or Pragmatism? Incremental Change vs. Radical Overhaul, for anyone with any sense, this balancing act is delusional because capitalism’s drive for profit and growth stands in opposition to the environmental sustainability and social equity that liberals say they seek. They do argue, with some merit, that incremental change within the system is more pragmatic and achievable in the short term, and that it can lay the groundwork for more substantial transformations in the future. Looking at historical precedents, significant social changes, such as civil rights advancements, labour protections, and environmental regulations, have come through gradual reforms rather than abrupt revolutions.

What this blog keeps asking is the liberal #mainstreaming path fit for purpose any more, after 40 years of worshipping a #deathcult, might we actually require radical changes? The onrushing #climatechaos and hard shifts to the right, makes questioning this path the new building #mainstreming. We do need to question whether the current political and economic systems address pressing global issues effectively or at all. If not, more radical solutions need to be considered.

Back to the fluffy liberals. While maintaining the strengths of liberal democracy—such as civil liberties and political freedoms—it is worthwhile exploring and experimenting with alternative economic models that prioritize ecological sustainability and social equity more explicitly. This is in part what the current #openweb reboot is about.

Constructive dialogue about this between our “left” liberals and more radical progressives needs to lead to innovative solutions that draw on the basic humanistic strengths. While the liberal approach is contradictory, in its fluffier “left” path it represents a pragmatic effort to navigate the complexities of modern society. Whether this approach is sufficient to address our global challenges is a question that deserves ongoing discussion and active critical examination. This is at the heart of the fluffy/spiky debate.

  9. The issue with #fashernistas has much to do with our #NGO friends "chasing whatever is the current buzzword" what they push is activism that is exceptable to the #mainstreming groups, both radical and alt. The real world is more messy than this, so what is PUSHED is generally a very bad fit at best and rectonery at worst.

  10. Take a moment to think about basics

Take a moment to think about basics: activism/campaigning is about building resistance to the mainstream to change its flow in progressive directions. Were #mainstreaming is about shifting activism to reduce these resistances to the mainstream flow. Thus, it’s good to understand that #mainstreming is a #NGO agender to build the jobs of the people involved and is in turn funded to this end. Good not to get the shit mixed up.

Lifestyle is a way of forming a tribe inside this mainstream flow. The problem for activism is that this old school tribalism is obviously a BLOCK on social change, as looking and talking right are MORE important than being right. Being right would be “resistance” and lifestyle is about going with the counter flow.

On the other hand, the are advantages to “modern” tribal and lifestyle activism – it functions as social glue to hold campaigns together and provides a “uniform” flag to rally round. You notice I do not use words like anarchist, socialist, liberalism here as these have a different role in social change thinking – they are the ideas – the clothing is what I am taking about #fashernista is the hashtag.

#Revolution is about blowing up the flow of the mainstream so it floods into a different path, with much “calcollateral” damage in the process as we live inside a highly urban complex society. Both paths can be useful, both have costs.

Good not to mix this shit up

  11. Looking at the paths out of the current mess

We need an effective way of communicating that all value on the #fedivers is cultural, the tech itself is a product of this #openweb culture. The #activertypub speck is an accident of this culture not being swamped become the #mainstreaming was not interested at the time

We have an increasing number of funders pouring money down the drain in #fedivers tech, when the source of the value #openweb culture that created this new “commons” is swamped by the #mainstreaming agenda.

This #fediforum thing is going to be a hardcore invisible clash of cultures, all the #fashernitas who stood back from the #ActivertyPub push for the last 5 years are now flooding in, as are refugees from the encryptions mess. The language might be #fedvers BUT most of the people will not be. Let’s try and create focus, small steps.

#Mozfest Is on if you want to see posers, #fashernitas and general #NGO pointless. I did sign up but when the time came to log in I could not be bothered. I do use the browser, though.

We do need to express contempt for what a lot of the assumptions and agenda (often unspoken) our #NGO and #fashernitas crew push. Yes, it’s crap and pointless, so please say this, in most cases the “emperor’s” are not wearing any clothes. Express yourself, it’s needed.

The is going to be an increasing mix of #mainstreming people moving back to the #openweb we need much better tools and process to deal with the mess they bring with them as well as our own mess we have here. The is going to be a lot of prat’ish behaviour from both inside our #openweb movement and outside from the #dotcons we need a way to mediate this… as it’s obviously damage dressed up in #NGO clothing.

The problem with this negative circle is that it is self reinforcing, the prats, don’t like being pointed at as prats, and in reaction they dig deeper into prat’ish behaver. This damage is not helpful, we need fresh thinking, what do we do when “our” people act as prats. Ideas please?

The is a solution to this, the #OGB which mediates prat’ish behaver by democracy unite.openworlds.info/Open-Med

  12. In the era of #climatechaos and #XR people who are #blocking the needed social change in tech are criminals, that are playing an active role in the genocide of our societies and peoples due to social and ecological breakdown.

We have different paths in place #4opens #openweb #OGB #indymediaback #OMN are working examples of social tech tools to mediate away from this #mainstreming criminality.

Take a moment to step away, take a breath, think, then act. Don't be a prat, thanks

  13. We have been using the turm #dotcons for more than the last ten years to talk about the issue in the #mainstreming texh, the recent hashtag #enshitification is a synonym for the original idea long used Idea.

  15. The article "tragedy of the commons" the problem is yes, he is wrong, but the bigger problem is yes he is right in our capitalistic #mainstreming society - so in this second context it is very good to talk about the "tragedy of the commons". Context matters.

  17. In tech, we find it hard to think outside feudalism, this is connected to our #mainstreaming BRAND thinking. We try not be this stupid on the #openweb, but we are only human. Please try to help us do better

This is going to become an increasing problem as the #mainstreming floods in, ideas please?

  18. @j

#fediverse we are going to have waves of #mainstreaming people coming into “our” #openweb counter currents, bringing a lot of non-native, unthinking blinded mess with them, they will push this mess over us as common sense then they will retreat back to #mainstreming and point at us covered in mess… “look these guys are covered in mess we can’t work with them…”

  21. Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politica is right violence will win if we don't take a non #mainstreming path, not the traditional playing of power politics. It went horrible wrong because it was built on CONTROL. He took the silo path, not the aggregation path, says the organic intellectual with muddy feet.

  22. #OMN if we don't do better at composting the current social/tech mess this will become #mainstreming more and bite us en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enemy_of

  23. @J12t the hashtag gives people the link to find the name, this is the "native" idea of "surfing the web" which people have lost in the era of the "algorithm" feeding them content. This is a good subject to talk about. Active vs passive #openweb is inherently active, the #dotcons push passive, the flood of #mainstreming people are "obviously" unthinkably bringing this with them. Ideas to mediate this, please.

  24. The is going to be an increasing mix of #mainstreming people moving back to the #openweb we need much better tools and process to deal with the mess they bring with them as well as our own mess we have here ;)

  25. The #OGB has 3 subjects to talk about. 1) tradition of working activist grassroots organizing 2) the use of technological federation, ActivityPub and the Fediverse traditions to scale. 3) original thinking, bringing these together for grassroots #openweb producer governance.

Then is the #offtopic threads from #mainstreming dogmas and "common sense". I try to keep this separate, as it's mostly not relevant, and always quickly turns to trolling, sadly.

  26. In tech, we find it hard to think outside #feudalism this is connected to our #mainstreaming BRAND thinking. We try not be this stupid on the #openweb, but we are only human. Please try to help us do better

Some ideas: Every day, naming of the current "common sense" as worshipping the #deathcult is both true and useful in making #mainstreming uncomfortable.
