The weird weather has extended injured turtle season again. This wee musk #turtle was found caught in a boat propeller by the folks cleaning and winterizing the boat. His injuries are extensive and from the healing that's already happened I'd guess he was stuck in there a couple of days. Yet he's walking around and trying to bite me. Also, his musk gland works. I hope he hangs on.

This is the hardest time of year for me to get out and exercise, not because it's cold and dark, but because it's emotionally heavy. It is summer's end, the final harvest, #Scorpio season, the season of #grief in a society that generally doesn't do grief well. I got out for a run anyway, with the dying leaves, dragging some joy out from within, working on Sunday's sermon about #AllSoulsDay in my head.

There is a dedicated international community of bat rehabilitators so of course there was an outpouring of concern for the rehabbers in Israel. Checked in with their social media today. They and the #bats are okay, and they are also going into the conflict zone to rescue domestic animals who were separated from their families. This happened in Ukraine as well.
Human conflict affects the more-than-humans too.

I also acknowledged that turtle rehab season has extended well past Labor Day the past couple of years and, due to our changing climate, probably will never go back to the schedule I'd gotten used to. It's a small thing for me, one person, to have to schedule my life differently, but there are many small things affecting many beings.

One of my grad school classes is on eco-emotions. This module we were working with grief and our assignment was to create a ritual around someone or something we were mourning. I buried the two turtles I lost this week and mourned all the beings I couldn't save this year.

I get it. I do. A fed bear is a dead bear, even when she was fed unintentionally by careless humans. Doesn't mean it doesn't break my heart every time I see a story like this, especially when two orphaned cubs lost their freedom and a third will likely die alone and scared. It's on us humans to do better.

I love fall #running, and I'm grateful that I am able to get out there often. Life is a bit overwhelming at the moment and it feels good to be in my body to start the day.
This little midland painted #turtle is too cute not to share. His back end was injured by a car but he's healing well. I'm confident he will be released in the spring.

Cool drizzle for my run this morning and our trees are past peak color here in the #Adirondacks.
The little merganser I rescued didn't have a good outcome. Vet suspected he was hit by a boat. Severe head trauma and multiple fractures in one wing. Even if we could have gotten him through the head trauma, his wing would never heal well enough to migrate, so we opted for humane euthanasia. Sometimes #WildlifeRehabilitation sucks, but we keep trying.

I love running in the early morning dark. Yeah, I'm slow, but whatever. For me it's just getting out there and moving that's important.
Last evening I rescued a juvenile merganser from the lake. Poor dude was alone and has an eye issue. Had to get an expert to confirm my ID because a merganser is a first for me. Going to the vet today to see what's up. It's very hard to keep up with grad school classes when wild ones keep needing rescuing.

Ran a mile early this morning (first since half marathon) in my new disco light visibility vest. Signed up for a Thanksgiving 5K to stay motivated. Also, please enjoy a baby painted turtle demonstrating their innate appreciation of leg day.
This baby is one of two who hatched from a clutch of eggs removed from a mom who didn't survive being hit by a car on her way to nest. They will be released in the spring.

Got out on my paddleboard while the stars were still out and saw the first light of day from the lake.

Turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests this time of year. They don't have an easy trip to the water. They may have to cross roads or parking lots and evade predators on the way. And sometimes they run into a lawn mower, like this poor dude. He lost two feet and half of another, and the side of his shell, but he's been hanging on for five days. And he tried to bite me, which is a good sign. (I survived the attack.)

I wish that meant I was done for the year but I have a few who weren't ready and had three intakes in the past week who will need to spend the winter with me. It's been an emotionally challenging season with too many losses. But watching a turtle who was hit by a car a few months ago swim away to keep living his life makes the rough stuff worth it.
