  1. Last night I celebrated the summer solstice by releasing a snapping turtle. He had been hit by a car at the end of April on his way across a busy road to the river where he spends his summers. Luckily his finder watches for him every year to help him cross and was able to get him into care right away. He healed up and finally made it to the river, where he swam off into the sunset.

  2. @winnipegfreepress oh wow! This is great news! Shelter pods being redistributed to help housing, the Winnipeg Zoo, and Winnipeg Folk Festival! Nicely done! #housing #wildliferehabiliation #winnipegfolkfestival

  3. I love running in the early morning dark. Yeah, I'm slow, but whatever. For me it's just getting out there and moving that's important.

Last evening I rescued a juvenile merganser from the lake. Poor dude was alone and has an eye issue. Had to get an expert to confirm my ID because a merganser is a first for me. Going to the vet today to see what's up. It's very hard to keep up with grad school classes when wild ones keep needing rescuing.

  4. Ran a mile early this morning (first since half marathon) in my new disco light visibility vest. Signed up for a Thanksgiving 5K to stay motivated. Also, please enjoy a baby painted turtle demonstrating their innate appreciation of leg day.

This baby is one of two who hatched from a clutch of eggs removed from a mom who didn't survive being hit by a car on her way to nest. They will be released in the spring.

  5. Turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests this time of year. They don't have an easy trip to the water. They may have to cross roads or parking lots and evade predators on the way. And sometimes they run into a lawn mower, like this poor dude. He lost two feet and half of another, and the side of his shell, but he's been hanging on for five days. And he tried to bite me, which is a good sign. (I survived the attack.)

  6. Last turtle healed enough to go home wandered back down to his brook today. I wish that meant I was done for the year but I have a few who weren't ready and had three intakes in the past week who will need to spend the winter with me. It's been an emotionally challenging season with too many losses. But watching a turtle who was hit by a car a few months ago swim away to keep living his life makes the rough stuff worth it.

  7. Took a break from turtles last night to pick up a coyote pup who had been hit by a car nearby and drove him an hour away to meet a wildlife rehabilitator I know who specializes in fox and coyote. This evening she sent me this picture of the youngster on his feet. (Yay!) He has head trauma and will be healing for awhile, but this is an improvement from yesterday when he just fell over.

  8. Many aspects of life have been crazy and my wildlife rehabilitation season has been heartbreakingly awful. But then I find baby turtles in the incubator and all is right with the world.

Midland painted turtles from a clutch of eggs removed from a mom who was hit by a car on her way to nest and did not survive. Will be released back to mom's home when they get bigger.
