  1. In November, OCCRA got a call about an injured bald eagle at Pier Park late at night. Our team captured and transported her to Dove Lewis, who then transferred to Bird Alliance. Today she’s back where she belongs. Fly free, Madge! #wildliferescue #wildliferehab

  2. Beau took me to the NIWRA, today. We had lots of fun, walking in the rain & seeing all the #wildlife living there.

North Island Wildlife Recovery Association #NIWRA is a #nonprofit, world-class #rehabilitation facility situated on 8 acres of immaculately manicured grounds, caring for #animals with all types of needs, including birds with broken wings, orphaned black bears, electrocuted eagles and much more!

    NIWRA’s main goals are to:
#Reintroduce as many animals back to the wild as possible.
#Educate the public about wildlife and environmental issues.

  3. A female opossum that is being overwintered, named Pirate by her finder. She's very wary of people, and is healthy but being treated for an eye injury. #wildlife #wildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #rehabilitation #wildliferescue #opossum #opossums

  4. Wildlife rehabbers see the #hurricane horrors that don't often get reported. An uncountable number of wild beings have been killed, injured, or displaced in the flooding. Many rehabbers lost everything but are still trying to help.

NY rehabbers filled a truck with donated supplies heading to WNC and are working on a second truckload. And GA rehabbers got permission from the state to temporarily care for FL wildlife patients so they can evacuate.

  5. First snow of the season in my part of the #Adirondacks but it has already changed over to rain and sleet. Morning meditation happened anyway and I brought snacks for my friends. I will be missing them this weekend. I leave this afternoon for the NYS #WildlifeRehabilitator conference for continuing ed and networking.

  6. Many aspects of life have been crazy and my wildlife rehabilitation season has been heartbreakingly awful. But then I find baby turtles in the incubator and all is right with the world.

Midland painted turtles from a clutch of eggs removed from a mom who was hit by a car on her way to nest and did not survive. Will be released back to mom's home when they get bigger.

  7. Back in February I put my then 15 month old grandson in the car and took him with me to pick up an injured eastern screech owl from the finder and transport her to a raptor rehabilitator. Today we got back in the car to watch her return to the wild, his first release!

  8. Wouldn't normally pick up a checkout aisle magazine but this issue seems cool.

When the writer of this feature approached me, I took advantage of the opportunity to spread the word about wildlife rehabilitation and turtles.

(For the record, I never said anything about breaking out of my shell, but it's a cute headline.)

  9. Another turtle is in the house. This lucky little painted turtle has only a minor crack and sore back legs. He has some pain and anti-inflammatory meds on board to help with that. Yesterday's snapping turtle was 23lbs/10kg, making her the biggest adult currently in care. (I have some that spent the winter with me to allow more time for healing.) At 6oz/162g, this little guy is the smallest adult here now.

    Keep watching out for turtles.

  10. For the second year in a row, my turtle rehab season began on Easter weekend. This year's first turtle was a wee painted turtle hatchling with poor timing. He emerged from the nest where he spent winter and headed for a lake that still had ice on it. Luckily a family was playing on the beach, a youngster spotted him, and an adult called for help. He'll get first class accommodations for a few months while he grows a bit and will be released in summer.

  11. My daughter, an EMT, just started full time with our county EMS and that means lots of grandbaby-sitting for me. While she is busy saving human lives, I've got a 15 month old assistant in the "wildlife ambulance." His first rescue was an injured screech owl who was safely delivered to a raptor rehabilitator. Not many calls this time of year, but it's good that we can practice car seat and animal carrier logistics before turtle nesting season starts.
