I spent the weekend at NY's #WildlifeRehabilitation conference, where there was as much discussion about compassion fatigue, intersectionality, and regulatory ambiguity as there was wildlife care, and it was about time. The public and the state agencies expect miracles and perfect PR from overworked volunteers who get no funding, and it sucks.

I am glad to be home now with my wild friends, enjoying coffee in my new mug. (SSD = silver sulfadiazine, a topical treatment we use for everything.)

I was late bringing his dinner and he was actually out of his hide. That never happens. Poor opossum would really like to go free but needs to finish healing and regrow his hair to have a chance out in the cold. You can see the bare strip behind his shoulder where he was stitched up. There was a degloving on his rear thigh not visible in the picture that is still healing. Sorry, bud, it's a few more weeks of easy meals for you.

Back in February I put my then 15 month old grandson in the car and took him with me to pick up an injured eastern screech owl from the finder and transport her to a raptor rehabilitator. Today we got back in the car to watch her return to the wild, his first release!

One of my grad school classes is on eco-emotions. This module we were working with grief and our assignment was to create a ritual around someone or something we were mourning. I buried the two turtles I lost this week and mourned all the beings I couldn't save this year.

I just finished my #WildlifeRehabilitation logs. I had 67 animals in care this year. 49 were reptiles (3 snakes, 46 #turtles). Half died unfortunately, which makes me sad in the remembering. 12 turtles are still with me, along with an opossum. I had 3 #frogs this year, all released. I like rehabbing frogs. They are surprisingly resilient and appreciate free meals.

The busy #WildlifeRehabilitation season has begun & the 1st #injured & #orphaned #RedShoulderedHawks are coming in. Here are before & after photos of this very hungry #hawklet. She fell 60 feet from her nest, and was found by kind-hearted #hikers who brought her into the wildlife center. 2nd photo after eating 4 chopped mice. 😳☺️

She still has her #EggTooth (tiny white spot) on tip of beak - helps her to crack egg shell when she was hatching.

This young #RedShoulderedHawk found by a #GoodSamaritan was being attacked by a #GopherSnake (it most likely started the other way around). Through guidance over the 📞 the #brave finder was able to encourage the snake to release the hawk. After a full exam, no serious injuries. Here’s the little guy a few days later recovering from his traumatic experience. He did just fine & has been released back into the wild. He got a #SecondChance💚

Too cold to bring turtles to a fundraising event at a mall for our regional wildlife rehabilitation organization, so I got to be raven minder. Her name is Merlina. Wyatt, in the background, is a Eurasian eagle owl. They are both permitted educational ambassadors.

This is a juvenile #SwainsonsHawk who came into care earlier this year. He injured an eye when he fell from his nest. His juvenile feathers are beautiful, and if you look closely at the feather patterns on his legs, you can see they look like the silhouette of tiny birds flying. 🤎🪶

Two weeks ago I took in a young #VirginiaOpossum found playing dead and actually bleeding in the finder's yard. The vet stitched up two large wounds on his body that looked like he had narrowly escaped a predator like a fox or coyote. So far this is the best picture I've gotten because, unless I pull him out for meds and crate cleaning thus occupying my hands, he hides, as he should. Anyway, please look at this opossum. 🙂

The weird weather has extended injured turtle season again. This wee musk #turtle was found caught in a boat propeller by the folks cleaning and winterizing the boat. His injuries are extensive and from the healing that's already happened I'd guess he was stuck in there a couple of days. Yet he's walking around and trying to bite me. Also, his musk gland works. I hope he hangs on.

Cool drizzle for my run this morning and our trees are past peak color here in the #Adirondacks.

The little merganser I rescued didn't have a good outcome. Vet suspected he was hit by a boat. Severe head trauma and multiple fractures in one wing. Even if we could have gotten him through the head trauma, his wing would never heal well enough to migrate, so we opted for humane euthanasia. Sometimes #WildlifeRehabilitation sucks, but we keep trying.
