#Toronto, May 22, 2026 – "On World #Biodiversity Day, a new report published by #OntarioNature demonstrates the critical role that the Greenbelt plays as a safe haven for some of Ontario’s most vulnerable species.
"The report – Species at Risk in the Greenbelt: Successes, Challenges and Opportunities – shows that since 2004, the number of species at risk living in the Greenbelt has increased by 68%, rising from 72 to 121 species. That growth far outpaces provincial trends, confirming the Greenbelt’s critical importance for biodiversity in southern Ontario.
"The 121 at-risk species that inhabit the Greenbelt represent 42% of the total species at risk in Ontario – including rare birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and plants. Some, like the hooded warbler, are showing signs of recovery thanks to protected habitats and coordinated conservation efforts. Others, like redside dace and Jefferson salamander, are struggling as habitat fragmentation and pollution harm breeding and feeding grounds. The habitats the Greenbelt provides for the hooded warbler, redside dace, Jefferson salamander and many other species not only sustain this diversity of life but play an essential role in human health by ensuring the flow of clean water, filtering the air and providing a natural buffer against flooding.
" 'The Greenbelt shows us what’s possible when nature is given space to breathe,' said Ontario Nature’s Acting Conservation Science and #Stewardship Director, Jenna Quinn. 'But we can’t expect it to do all the work on its own. Species at risk need action to ensure their recovery.'

" 'I can see how sharp the lines are between the forest cover and the development,' Lax said. 'Seeing it from a broader perspective, you can see how stark it is.'
"Lax is the executive director of the #A2ACollaborative. It’s a binational group focused on protecting and improving a major #WildlifeCorridor that spans across southern Ontario and northern #NewYork.
"She’s taking photos and videos of an 85-kilometer (or 52-mile) stretch of Ontario’s Highway 401. In a section between #Mallorytown and #Gananoque, the lanes of traffic split, and a forested median fills the gap.
" 'It's another area where we have recommended a wildlife overpass,' she said over the airplane's headset. 'So I'm trying to get an image of how the forest cover connects.'
"#A2A has pinpointed two more locations along the 401 between Gananoque and #Brockville where they think overpasses and underpasses could help more animals survive crossing the busy highway, Lax said.
"That’s because this area is a critical wildlife pathway in northeastern #NorthAmerica."

Another passed and exacerbated boundary for the sake of corporate greed. We all know AI uses massive amounts of energy which governments (that is taxpayers & bill payers) subsidise.Will the public benefits be shared equitably? I think not. As for human centric how relational will be the program be, Will it have bias? of course it will. I for one am not buying into this.
More adversarial politics will and does not help the majority of which I am part, much less the planet of which we are all a part.
Lets just slow down, or even how radical is this, stop, and assess/review before blundering on. After all this is normal in every other form of planning I am aware of. Oh yes it's not planned, silly me it's driven. Driven by profit not people elected or otherwise.
It will not develop the following which we the people need to properly steward our shared home, Earth-

Yesterday was my granddaughter’s 9th birthday. At my husband’s insistence, we bought a #globe as her gift. What a success—she immediately located #NJ and then spent quite a while identifying places that she, her family, and everyone else she knows have been. So important to help #kids understand the #interconnectedness of everyone on this #BigBlueMarble.
