Dermestidae beetles taste for ravaging libraries, museums and wardrobes made them quite unpopular.
At the origin, they lived unnoticed in nature. This Dermestes undulatus Brahm was observed under my forest cover on 1. October 2019
Its antennae end into a 4 segmented club, made out of segments 8 to 11. But 8 is so tiny and well hidden under 9, that its existence is indicated by only a few bristles.

When both presence and absence of a species are meaningful, it is a bioindicator. #Carabidae are such species. So let's talk for a moment about about those, which have been found missing from my #forest.
Carabus auronitens F. a locally widespread forest-core species. This means, it can't cross gaps such as roads or wide forest alleys. It ventures into edges in case of moths outburst.
Despite its requirements for old trees and dead wood are met here, none was seen in 6y. Why?

I'm carrying out a study about 2 cryptic Onhtophagus species (Coleoptera Scarabaeidae).
A paratype locality is located a few kilometers away from my forest, but associated genitalia were borrowed and never returned to NHM..
My forest provided hundreds of new specimens.
But not this year. I saw just none of them, despite summer is their time. These dung beetles follow mammals. Food chain alteration, may eventually have driven mammals away.

Daphne laureola L. is blooming. It is a winter plant species and it is pollinated by insects. Yes: there are Winter-dwelling insects.
Obviously in Southern Spain only, its local main pollinator was identified as Clypeogethes elongatus (rosenh.) (a pollen beetle).
Here it's not Spain. Pollen beetles are not foraging now. I have drawn a list of winter foragers in my forest and have suspicions about some species. But I can not confirm. Weirdly, I'm finding no reference about D. laureola L. pollination outside Mediterranean. Is anyone aware of a reference, I would have missed?

Nicrophorus vespillo (L.) portrayed. It's a carrion beetle (Silphidae). It is easily identified by its golden hairy pronotum fore margin. Sometimes these hairs are lost. In such cases, just check its inward-curved hind tibiae.
Aggressive Nicrophorus species try to avoid one another. N. vespillo (L.) is large but not as large as black N. humator Gleditsch, our forest specialist. Therefore N. vespillo (L.) restricts itself to the openland. This one comes from a clearing in my forest.

Species of the rove beetles remotely-related genus Ptomaphagus (Staphylinioidea Leiodidae) are everywhere in gardens as well as in forests. This genus is easily identified. Their pronotum and elytra are both decorated with an unusual wavy pattern of transverse ridges. This one is a female from my forest floor (23.-V-2019). Alas, identifying females with certainty is tricky.

Yeah. I know. I'm always talking about Carabus nemoralis Müller (Coleoptera #Carabidae) these days. Even to me it sounds unusual. I never saw that species so often. Ordinarily it uses my #forest as a winter refuge and forages there only at both ends of vegetation season. But this foraging pattern changed this year. It has been recorded continuously past the end of winter until now. And this is bad. Here is why:

Nintendo shut down online services and here I am in 2025 playing a Mario Kart 7 mod online against up to 7 other players...and mostly getting my ass kicked.
It only takes a few seconds to join a game and there are tons of people online.

I'm thinking about abandoning #BayonettaOrigins.
I like the art style and the twin character controls. The latter makes me think of "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons".
But I don't think the story is very interesting and the actual gameplay is becoming a bit tedious. According to the save file I've only completed 26%, which is way too early to have this feeling. 😩
I tried some "Great Ace Attorney" yesterday, but that doesn't feel right either.
Want to play, but don't know what. 😫
