  1. One perk of being curator of a natural history collection is that our volunteers and staff bring me little treasures. Here's an Oiceoptoma carrion beetle that John Carroll found on a deer carcass in south Austin. Life- and death- goes on.

  2. Nicrophorus vespillo (L.) portrayed. It's a carrion beetle (Silphidae). It is easily identified by its golden hairy pronotum fore margin. Sometimes these hairs are lost. In such cases, just check its inward-curved hind tibiae.

    Aggressive Nicrophorus species try to avoid one another. N. vespillo (L.) is large but not as large as black N. humator Gleditsch, our forest specialist. Therefore N. vespillo (L.) restricts itself to the openland. This one comes from a clearing in my forest.
