América Latina vuelve a poner bajo la lupa uno de sus mayores desafíos estructurales. Se trata de garantizar un acceso real, equitativo y oportuno a los servicios de salud. Aunque en las últimas décadas la región ha logrado avances importantes en cobertura con sistemas que han ampliado el aseguramiento a millones de personas continúan las brechas que evidencian que estar afiliado no siempre significa recibir atención efectiva.
De acuerdo con la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), el 35,2% de la población en América Latina reporta necesidades de salud no satisfechas. Esta cifra se acentúa en los sectores de menores ingresos, donde alcanza el 38,5%, lo que confirma que la desigualdad sigue siendo un factor determinante en el acceso.
Adicionalmente, cerca de 3 de cada 10 personas (29,3%)1 desisten de buscar atención médica por razones como tiempos de espera prolongados, costos elevados o barreras administrativas.
El panorama evidencia un reto estructural, aunque los países han incrementado los niveles de cobertura, esto no se traduce necesariamente en disponibilidad física de servicios ni en su asequibilidad. En 2021, los hogares latinoamericanos financiaron más del 28%2 del gasto total en salud con recursos propios, un indicador que puede incrementar el riesgo de empobrecimiento ante eventos médicos inesperados. –sn–
