  1. OK, I've been travelling most of this week and only keeping half an eye on UK news, so can someone explain to me what's going on with this nonsense with Lindsay Hoyle?

I understand that he changed the order of voting on an SNP motion and a Labour amendment in an unconventional way, and that was controversial.

And I understand he's been criticised for "giving in to threats of violence".

I don't understand how those things are connected.

    What am I missing?

  2. @twizzt Great photo!

All we need now is a photo of another weevil of a different size so that we can decide which one is the lesser of two weevils

  3. @TJ1001 @jackLondon The real point here is not whether it's in the King's Speech, it's that it's Labour policy to continue the #2ChildCap even though it is clearly a Tory policy both in terms of who first introduced it and in its entire spirit.

It shows that Labour is no longer a party of the left.

  4. CW: UK Politics

@jackLondon But interesting that you think that scrapping the #2ChildCap is a "left-wing fringe" thing.

  5. CW: UK Politics

    @jackLondon Don't know, didn't watch it.

But I did see that Starmer just kicked 7 MPs out of the party for voting against the #2ChildCap.

If that's not Torying, I'm not sure what is.

  6. @iandunt.bsky.social That's similar to what I pay to Virgin Media.

Where I live, there is really no alternative if I want fast broadband. The Openreach speeds round here are very slow.

And don't Virgin Media know it!

  7. Happy New Year everyone!

    My wishes for 2024:

    1. Putin's troops get kicked the hell out of Ukraine
    2. The western powers remember that genocide is a Bad Thing and make Israel stop their genocide in Gaza
    3. Governments around the world start taking the threat of climate change seriously

  8. OK, 3 possibilities here:

    1. I'm missing something obvious about how this is going to boost my pension by £1000 per year

    2. The way in which this reform is going to boost my pension by £1000 a year is subtle and poorly explained in the article

    3. The article is talking bollocks and nobody's pension is going to be boosted by £1000 per year.

    Any ideas?

  9. CW: Israel-Gaza war, Irish politics

I have just listened to the Taoiseach Simon Harris giving an incredibly powerful and moving speech about why Ireland (along with Spain and Norway) is recognising Palestine as a state.

There's part of it here, but if you can find the whole speech, you should listen to it. One of the best speeches I've heard from any politician for a very long time.

  11. Just listened to last night's BBC #Newscast on The Rapist's temper tantrum.

Listening to #ToryLaura both-sides-ing it all was pretty sickening.

  13. CW: US Politics

None of this is remotely surprising. In fact the only thing that surprises me is that it took over 2 months for anyone to fuck up on this scale.

Remember that the number 1 requirement for anyone to be given a job at the highest levels of the US government is that they need to have unthinking loyalty to The Rapist.

That pretty much by definition rules out anyone with even basic levels of competence.

I'd be more convinced that #Starmer and his underlings were serious about doing something about the deepfake porn on Twitter if they didn't all have active Twitter accounts.

So apparently one of the main features of reforming the NHS is to give out millions of smart watches.

I wonder whether this is because:

    a) There is good evidence from randomised controlled trials that widespread population use of smart watches makes populations significantly healthier;

    or

    b) Wes Streeting is sponsored by smart watch manufacturers?

  16. CW: UK Politics, NHS

I am not opposed to NHS reform in principle, but I would like to see any reforms meet 2 criteria:

    1. Done for the benefit of patients, not for profit-making opportunities for Labour Party sponsors

    2. Properly thought through, not just more upheaval for the sake of it. God knows the NHS has seen enough of that over the years.

Given this all seems to be based on a report put together in 8 weeks, I am not optimistic

  17. CW: UK Election

It's clear that Sunak's electoral strategy is to go all out for courting the elderly, and just take it for granted that young people won't vote.

Next week I'm expecting some announcements on policies that will inflate house prices and benefit home owners at the expense of renters.

Young people: show him he's wrong, and register to vote.

  19. Happy Guy Fawkes Night to all those who celebrate.

For those not familiar with the tradition, it's when we commemorate the (failed) attempt by Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder.

I will leave it to you to form your own value judgements about whether blowing up the Houses of Parliament is a good thing or a bad thing.

  20. What we needed to hear from #COP29 if we would like our planet still to be mostly habitable for humans in the latter half of this century:

"We recognise #ClimateChange is an urgent and existential threat to humanity, and will do whatever it takes to cut our carbon emissions to zero by 2030"

  21. No doubt we're going to hear from world leaders at #COP29 that they can't afford to pay what it takes to tackle climate change.

They need to ask the good people of Valencia just how much it costs to not tackle climate change.

  22. It seems to me that #COP28 was not so much about "do we want to avoid making large parts of the world uninhabitable for humans?" as about "do we want to make large parts of the world uninhabitable for humans in the next 5 years or shall we show willing by trying to put it off until the mid 2030s?"

  23. The world is mostly run by people of my generation. We'll be dead by the time the really catastrophic effects of climate change are felt in the latter half of this century.

So at first sight, maybe that explains why the people running the world are not taking climate change as the existential threat that it is.

But what I find puzzling: don't any of them have children? Or grandchildren? Or do they all hate their kids?
