I live in #Taiwan, and this place is a country, not a bargaining chip to be traded between China and the US. Yet, as Trump and Xi meet, the whole world is talking about this place with seemingly zero input from its leaders.
Taiwan has its own democratically elected president, its own legislature, its own judiciary, its own currency, its own passport. And yes, thankfully, its own military. The US has never owned an inch of it, and the Chinese Communist Party has never controlled an inch of it.
So I really ask those who are discussing current event to keep in mind Taiwanese representation. It’s a small country, but that doesn’t mean its sovereignty matters any less. Bring Taiwanese to the table.

SN Redacción | AgenciasEl periodista Walter Nelson Martínez Martínez, de origen uruguayo y nacionalizado venezolano, murió este 22 de enero. La información fue confirmada por el ministro de Comunicación e Información, Miguel Pérez Pirela, mediante un mensaje difundido en la plataforma X.
Martínez contó con una trayectoria de más de tres décadas en radio, televisión y prensa escrita. Se desempeñó como corresponsal de guerra y analista internacional en distintos momentos de su carrera profesional. Fue ampliamente reconocido por la conducción del programa Dossier, transmitido por Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).

A lo largo de su carrera, el comunicador desarrolló un estilo propio centrado en el análisis geopolítico. Sus contenidos abordaron conflictos internacionales, relaciones de poder y procesos históricos contemporáneos. Esa línea editorial marcó una diferencia en la televisión venezolana de análisis político.

Pérez Pirela mencionó el compromiso del comunicador con la verdad y el pensamiento crítico. Añadió que su trabajo se vinculó con la defensa de la soberanía de los pueblos. Dichos elementos formaron parte central de su trayectoria profesional.
Trayectoria internacional
Nacido en Montevideo en 1941, Walter Martínez se trasladó a Caracas en 1969. En la capital venezolana consolidó su carrera como analista y conductor de programas informativos. Desde allí desarrolló coberturas de acontecimientos internacionales relevantes.
El programa Dossier se caracterizó por un formato analítico sostenido en el tiempo. Incluyó referencias históricas, políticas y culturales sobre la escena global. El espacio se mantuvo vigente durante décadas en distintos formatos y plataformas estatales.

Martínez también fue identificado por frases recurrentes al cierre de sus emisiones. Entre ellas destacó la referencia al planeta como “nuestra querida, contaminada y única nave espacial”. Esa expresión se convirtió en un sello reconocible de su estilo televisivo.
Salida de VTV
En 2019, el periodista denunció restricciones editoriales dentro de Venezolana de Televisión (VTV). Afirmó que se le impidió entrevistar a ciertos invitados y tratar temas específicos. Señaló que esas decisiones provinieron de la directiva del canal, entonces encabezada por Freddy Ñáñez.
En 2020, Martínez informó que fue apartado de manera definitiva del medio estatal. Indicó que también se le prohibió el ingreso a las instalaciones del canal. Las autoridades argumentaron motivos relacionados con su edad y la pandemia de covid-19.
Tras su salida, el comunicador incrementó su actividad en redes sociales. Desde esos espacios expresó críticas al manejo comunicacional del gobierno venezolano. Ese distanciamiento marcó una etapa final de confrontación pública con sectores oficiales.
Al confirmarse su muerte, Miguel Pérez Pirela transmitió condolencias en nombre de la presidente encargada Delcy Rodríguez y del gobierno venezolano. El mensaje fue dirigido a familiares, amigos y colegas del periodista. Con ello se cerró un ciclo relevante del periodismo de análisis internacional en Venezuela. –sn–
