Clan Of Xymox können wir zur „first wave of gothic“, denn die Band wurde Anfang der 80er Jahre unter dem Namen Xymox in den Niederlanden gegründet. Zwischen einer EP und dem ersten Longplayer änderten sie diesen in Clan Of Xymox, vielleicht wollten sie im Plattenregal lieber vor The Cure stehen als hinter X-mal Deutschland? Gleich mir ihrer ersten Single aus dem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum gelang ihnen 1985 ein Dancefloor-Klassiker: A Day. Nach ihrem zweiten Album, Medusa, wurden sie wieder zu Xymox und brachten bis 1993 vier weitere Alben heraus. 1994 begann eine dreijährige Pause, die 1997 mit dem Erscheinen des Albums Hidden Faces beendet wurde.
Die letzten beiden Xymox-Alben stellten einen Stilwechsel dar, was daran lag, dass die langjährigen Mitglieder Anke Wolbert und Pieter Nooten die Band 1991 verlassen hatten und Ronny Moorings als alleiniger Songwriter zurückblieb. Er orientierte sich am Manchester Rave und so erinnern die beiden Alben Metamorphosis und Headclouds leicht an New Orders Technique. Nach der Pause kam er 1997 als Clan Of Xymox mit neuer Besetzung und dem Album Hidden Faces zurück und schuf damit ein Werk, das an die alten Erfolge anknüpfen konnte und den Grundstein für den weiteren Verlauf seiner Karriere legte. Produziert wurde das Album mit David M. Allen, der schon u. a. mit The Cure, The Chameleons und The Sisters Of Mercy arbeitete. Eingängige Melodien treffen auf elektronische Beats und Gitarren, die mal wavig, mal post-punkig klingen.
Hervorzuheben sind die ersten drei Titel Out Of The Rain, This World und Going Round ’97, welches in der Urfassung auf der ersten Xymox-EP vertreten war.
