  1. Morning reading first took me to James Weldon Johnson's retelling of the Genesis creation narrative, "The Creation," then to Millay.

    JWJ's Creation starts as follows:

"And God stepped out on space,
And he looked around and said:
    I'm lonely—
    I'll make me a world."

Something about loneliness as a motive for creation is quite lovely, and resonates to me, on another frequency but still sensibly, with Millay's all-consuming hunger for the world.

  2. The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Just finished reading this excellent 1912 novel by James Weldon Johnson - the fictional account of a young biracial man living in the post-Reconstruction era of America. The title of the book is a bit misleading since throughout most of the lead character's story he is exploring his place in society with full acknowledgment of his true racial identity.

Weldon was a writer + civil rights activist - an early leader of the NAACP. He was known during the Harlem Renaissance for his poems + wrote the lyrics for "Lift Every Voice and Sing", which later became known as the Black National Anthem.

  8. @jameswallis On semi-related note, when looking on #HumanistsUK web site for a wedding celebrant a few years ago, I noticed one of the celebrants listed in London was also in #FascinatingAida, whose show we had also once enjoyed - although I assume there wouldn't have been a cabaret act thrown in with the ceremony...

  9. James Whale's The Man in the Iron Mask (1939), based (loosely) on the final instalment of Alexander Dumas’ tales of the Three Musketeers.

Visually impressive and worth seeing for some bravura acting, especially Louis Hayward’s extraordinary performances. Joan Bennett is good as well. Entertaining.
