A Look Back at Spider-Man #45 (1994)

Welcome back superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts, Spider-Man fans and comic book collectors! Today we go back to the mid-1990s and to explore a part of the Marvel Comics shared universe through a tale of the Spider-Man monthly series.
As revealed in Amazing Spider-Man #388, Richard and Mary Parker – who spent some time living with Peter Parker’s family after suddenly emerging from nowhere – were not Peter’s parents but androids designed to look, act and feel human. They were life model decoys (LFDs) programmed infiltrate Peter’s life until they learn Spider-Man’s true identity. As programmed, they reported to their master the Chameleon. Just seconds before Richard revealed the secret identity, Spider-Man suddenly interfered and this led to a series of violent acts.
With those details laid down, here is a look back at Spider-Man #45, published in 1994 by Marvel Comics with a story written by Howard Mackie and drawn by the late Tom Lyle. This is the first chapter of the Pursuit storyline.

The story begins moments after the huge conflict that happened. A very broken-hearted Spider-Man realized that “Mary” and “Richard” were impostors and his actual parents have long been gone. He is also concerned about how his Aunt May will handle the truth about Richard and Mary. Deep inside him, a desire for vengeance against the Chameleon is growing.
As he swings from one building to another in New York City, Peter Parker begins to realize that his role as Spider-Man is turning into a farce. He begins his obsession of hunting down the Chameleon and stopping him until he keeps him out of his life for good…
Quality
What you are seeing here is a very obsessive, aggressive and more violent Spider-Man. Vengeance is his motivation.To make things clear to everyone, this tale does not have the long-running friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Instead, we have the iconic webslinger who is deeply hurt and the pain he carries motivates him to pursue the Chameleon (who is responsible for reviving the deep pain Peter felt after his parents died). It is clearly a pursuit for vengeance and the writing by Howard Mackie is very believable.
That said, readers will not only see Peter Parker wanting vengeance but also his dark side emerge. Carrying over the tragedy that happened in Amazing Spider-Man #388, Mackie and Lyle precisely crafted a story that had a very dramatic and radically different Peter Parker. Peter even shouts at his wife Mary Jane and struggles with revealing the details of the tragedy to his beloved Aunt May. When he goes out as Spider-Man to find answers, he approaches crooks aggressively and with more violence than before. In short, Spider-Man here lacks restraint and really looks like he could become a public menace.
That said, the portrayal of a very broken Peter Parker here can be alienating even to long-time Spider-Man fans.
Along the way, the Mackie-Lyle duo managed to develop the Chameleon not only as Spider-Man’s target but also as his most cunning and very diabolical enemy yet. The Chameleon (first appearance in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #1) is very prominently shown here which is quite meaningful because he is the very first super villain to encounter the webslinger. The long-time villain is very organized and has set up a trap for Spider-Man. The Chameleon also has his own obsession versus Spider-Man and his personal connection with Kraven the Hunter has a lot of depth to the story. As such, there are common elements that the webslinger and the evil master of disguise share.
Conclusion
Great work by Howard Mackie and the late Tom Lyle on expressing Peter Parker’s sadness over the loss of his parents.Spider-Man #45 (1994) is clearly a very engaging read even though its concept of Spider-Man wanting vengeance can be a turnoff to some readers. For one thing, the script Howard Mackie wrote has a lot of depth and Tom Lyle brought it to life with a fine art style. Having seen the 1989 movie Licence to Kill, I noticed the similarities Spider-Man has with Timothy Dalton’s James Bond when it comes to executing a private vendetta. That said, I enjoyed what was presented in this comic book. Indeed, this tale was published at a time when the dynamics of superhero storytelling in the 1990s changed dramatically moving towards tragedy, disaster and death. It is clearly a product of its time and anyone who wants to read a dark and gritty Spider-Man portrayal should go for this. As such, I am convinced to read on with the Pursuit storyline.
Overall, Spider-Man #45 (1994) is recommended.

Business oblige de Jan Egleson
Tiré du roman du même nom du britannique Simon Brett, paru en 1984, ce film à l’humour noir vilipende la perte de l’humanisme portée par la technique. Dans les années 1980, « l’efficacité » (efficiency) exigée par la course à la rentabilité avait saisi les entreprises. Les ordinateurs de bureau venaient de faire leur apparition (dix ans avant la France, j’en témoigne). Le personnage principal du film, Graham Marshall (Michael Caine) en est la victime.
Il est le directeur-adjoint du marketing d’une grande boite de publicité et guigne le poste de directeur, prochainement libéré par la mise à la retraite de son patron George Brewster (John McMartin). Sa femme Leslie (Swoosie Kurtz) est avide de plus de fric, une caricature d’épouse américaine égocentrique qui ne fout rien d’autre que de se pomponner et muscler son corps avec « des appareils ». Elle a pour cela acheté un « escaladeur », un truc inutile qui mime la montée des escaliers (sans la descente). A chaque fois qu’elle le met en route, cela fait sauter les plombs de la baraque, d’apparence cossue mais le système électrique en ruines ; il faudrait tout changer, et pour cela avoir du fric. Leslie reproche continuellement à son mari son manque apparent d’ambition et de volonté, ce qui l’agace prodigieusement.
Hélas ! Graham, trop assuré de succéder à George, ne voit pas monter un jeune loup aux dents longues (pléonasme), Bob Benham (Peter Riegert). Il n’est pas plus compétent, mais il ose plus et utilise les nouveaux outils informatiques, donc il séduit par sa radicalité le haut patron qui voudrait faire bouger les choses, car si l’on ne bouge pas, on décline. Tropisme bien yankee que cette bougeotte pour la bougeotte, déjà en germe dans les années Reagan. George apprend à Graham qu’il n’a pas été choisi pour lui succéder, et il est dévasté. En attendant le métro, il est pris à partie par un mendiant collant qui le harcèle pour être « généreux ». A-t-on été « généreux » avec lui, aujourd’hui ? La société est impitoyable et l’homme est un loup pour l’homme. A chacun de faire son trou, le mendiant n’a qu’à aller solliciter ailleurs. Comme il insiste en le prenant par la cravate, Graham le repousse et la loque passe sous la rame de métro qui entre bruyamment en station. Il ne l’a pas voulu, mais cela s’est fait. Il est étonné que la foudre ne le réduise pas en cendres ; il se demande pourquoi cela ne lui fait au fond ni chaud, ni froid.
Il se dit que c’est la nouvelle façon d’agir dans la société américaine de son temps, et que se laisser faire est se rendre esclave des décisions arbitraires des autres. Pour se venger de ceux qui lui en veulent, il va planifier leur mort. Comme il a failli être électrocuté par le système électrique de la cave, il « apprend » à son épouse Leslie à réparer les plombs elle-même et « aménage » le cour-circuit inévitable lorsqu’elle va y toucher. Lors d’un déplacement à San Francisco pour assister à une conférence sur les méthodes de rentabilité que son nouveau patron Bob lui a imposé, Leslie monte sur son escaladeur aussi snob qu’inutile, fait sauter les plombs, descend à la cave les remettre, et se prend une décharge létale. Ce n’est pas Graham le coupable, mais la cave qui se rebiffe face à l’écervelée : premier succès. Le lieutenant de police Laker (Will Patton) se pose quelques questions, mais l’alibi du mari est très solide, et aucune preuve matérielle n’existe.
Bob les avait invités un week-end, Graham et Leslie, pour faire un tour sur son voilier, tout fier de présenter sa réussite : gros salaire, belle maison de campagne, hardi bateau, épouse mannequin. Cette vanité met en rage Graham, qui projette sa mort. Il la planifie méticuleusement en prenant la carte de location de voiture d’entreprise qu’a George, lorsqu’il le ramène bourré chez lui après son pot de retraite. Il se procure auprès du grouillot affecté au courrier des somnifères pour endormir sa maîtresse Stella (Elizabeth McGovern), qui en pince pour lui après la mort de sa femme. Il se rend au bateau de Bob et piège le roof en allumant le gaz à l’intérieur et en collant deux allumettes à friction sous l’ouverture soigneusement fermée – ce qui déclenchera inévitablement l’explosion. Il élimine ainsi d’un coup son patron et l’informaticien inutile qu’il lui a imposé dans son bureau.
Mais il est trop confiant. En rendant la voiture de location, il oublie son briquet plaqué or que lui a offert George, afin qu’il ait toujours du feu pour allumer le patron lorsqu’il sort un cigare. Le tort de George a été d’être toujours conciliant ; la nouvelle société impitoyable exige la force, pas la bienveillance ; l’égoïsme sacré, pas le travail en équipe. Déjà Trump pointait sous Reagan. Résistez, et vous êtes considéré par le tycoon ; pliez, et vous êtes considéré comme un p’tit con. Bob éliminé, le patron propose « à titre provisoire » le poste de directeur à Bob. Il le saisit et joue le jeu : il propose d’éliminer une bon tiers du service, car trop de gens sont inutiles selon lui, ce qui plaît beaucoup au patron. Lequel n’a pas de bateau mais indique, en passant, qu’il pilote un avion lors de ses loisirs. Cela donne des idées au désormais ambitieux Graham Marshall. Il le fera sauter en plein vol pour prendre sa place.
Pendant ce temps, le lieutenant de police Laker poursuit son enquête, inquiet de voir les morts se multiplier autour de Marshall. Mais il n’a pas de preuve. Leslie confirme que Graham était bien avec elle la nuit où le bateau a été préparé avant de sauter, qu’ils ont couché ensemble et qu’elle s’est réveillée à son côté, la tête pâteuse et ne se souvenant de pas grand-chose. Laker lui laisse sa carte au cas où. Et, de fait, elle s’aperçoit que Graham a perdu son briquet plaqué or bien reconnaissable ; elle se rend compte aussi que l’objet réapparaît dans un courrier de la société de location d’autos adressé à George, trouvé sur le tableau de bord. Elle sait donc que Graham lui a menti et contacte Laker. Mais Graham l’a vue et la suit dans le métro. Sur le quai, il la confronte et… pour éliminer tout témoin, va-t-il la pousser comme le mendiant ? Je vous laisse deviner. Au même moment, George qui n’avait pas reconnu avoir loué la voiture, et déprimé par sa mise au rebut, avale la boite de somnifères que lui a laissé Graham.
Un bon thriller, avec une fin immorale, ou plutôt dans la nouvelle morale des loups de la finance nés avec les années 80 (y compris en France). Tout pour ma gueule, piétinez les concurrents, séduisez les patrons pour mieux les enfoncer et prendre leur place, que le plus égoïste et celui qui ose le plus gagne. L’humanisme ? Vous rigolez, c’est pour les midinettes et les lâches. Place aux « affaires », au fric, au pouvoir. Tout est bon pour la gagne : « couchez, soudoyez, éliminez » ! On dirait une pub pour eau minérale, la nouvelle pureté santé. Mais c’est cela, la vie à la mode yankee : être le plus fort et écrabouiller tous ceux qui se mettent en travers de vos désirs. Réjouissant…
