"Unemployment is at its highest level in more than a decade, but one expert offers a silver lining, saying that could actually be a sign of early economic growth."
#TheDetail, Feb 2026
That's some impressively wishful thinking right there!
This "one expert" isn't named, but a tags on this post says "Robert Walters". I'm guessing the one who runs one of many casual labour exploitation companies in Aotearoa;

Now it seems like we're looking at another round of forced amalgamation of local bodies, with Auckland's "supercity" council as the model. The first step being arbitrarily firing all regional councillors and adding their responsibilities to the jobs of city and district mayors.
Two RNZ shows have reported on this over the last week or so, Focus on Politics;

@nickofnz #TheDetail by #RNZ did an episode today on power generators and prices, interesting. The need to not run out vs the greed of keeping the price high by high demand...
-
@mementomaori there's a super podcast episode about this on #TheDetail #RNZ
It will be interesting to follow developments

The real headline here is about how the casual use of Auror for Police surveillance ...
"... raised concerns about privacy for everyday Kiwis."
Instead, the headline editors chose for this episode of The Detail is;
"A retail crime-fighting app helping police track repeat offenders"
https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/the-detail?share=a6569f88-3260-4503-af87-14ce4b9f3d21
What's up with that?

@SimonCHulse I heard about this on #TheDetail recently and thought similarly.
I totally get wanting drivers to be safe and that's really important... this is all part of the puzzle that is society, families, communities breaking down, needing help 😢 . I don't know the answers 😕 🤷

The most revealing quote: "There was a survey done about 10 years ago that suggested the majority of #National supporters don't know anybody who lives on a #benefit... so it becomes very easy to imagine that everyone on a benefit is lazy and exploiting the system."

Finally got back to the rest of this podcast about telecommunications in natural disasters;
https://www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/the-detail/story/2018881865/preventing-a-communications-blackout-in-the-next-big-disasterWorth revisiting in the context of the threatened viability of the AM Network, with its funding increasingly in question.
Battery-powered transistor radios are a cheap way to guarantee people's access to live information in emergency situations. But only if there are broadcasting towers strong enough to reach them.

"The argument that I'm really wanting to make in Raising the Bar is, that's a really dangerous thing to do to young people, is to strip them of their imagination. And particular kinds of schooling can do that, and do it really quickly."

We need to think carefully before a fleet of drones is set loose to zap living things with lasers. Very, *very* carefully. But this is a serious proposal for killing invasive plants;

Another very interesting episode of #TheDetail yesterday morning, all about #AI and our responsibilities as users

"I am the Minister of Resources. I look forward to leading the debate, changing the law, enabling gas and oil exploration - wealth development - to take place yet again in NZ. Mining is coming back as well, and if there is a mineral, if there is a mining opportunity, and it's impeded by a blind frog, goodbye freddy."

The story of the diverse community media renaissance on Aotea (Great Barrier Island) suggests that media storytelling and representation might work better when produced at a local scale, even if it's more commercially profitable at the largest possible scale.

"The US Department of Justice (DOJ) claims Google acts as a monopoly, illegally paying billions of dollars to Apple, Samsung, LG and others to make Google the default search engine on phones and computers.
The DOJ says this cuts other players, mainly Microsoft Bing and DuckDuckGo, out of the market.
Its anti-trust case was launched against the search engine giant in 2020"

"[LIANZA President Richard Misilei] says while obviously books are the basis of libraries, they do so much more.
They are polling places; adjuncts to WINZ where people are sent to print out forms or get help setting up an email account; homework clubs; job seeker support...
'There's a whole bunch of people who don't even have a laptop at home,' he says, which is why the computers set up in libraries are in huge demand."

@gamerswift13 Excellent questions and important to consider. Last week #TheDetail #podcast did an episode on strategic voting - sometimes also called split voting.
I'll find the link for you 👍
Some other clever people might be able to explain it here for you 🙂 -
"... the proposal.. is for the removal of half the academic positions in theatre, also... the disestablishment of the [theatre] program as a standalone entity, and to deprioritize the teaching of our performance and production elements of our courses, in favour of the analysis of theatre works..."

"I think social media now is sort of all-consuming for a lot of people... we should probably all understand by now that there are components of social media, which are... akin to any form of addictive substance. That they are designed to get you to keep on coming back, and deliver a little hit of something, whether it's... dopamine, or... just an ego boost."

"When my nain, my grandma, was at school, she wasn't allowed to speak Welsh. They did all their lessons in English," Owen says.
"In the 19th Century, quite a few years before my grandma was born, students would be punished for speaking Welsh and they would carry around a wooden sign with a 'WN' ['Welsh not'] on... so if you were caught speaking Welsh, you would be caned, beaten, get that sign around you.''
Sometimes I am ashamed to be English.

Once again, NZ news media pundits spend over 20 minutes talking about various party's prospects in the 2023 election, with barely a mention of any actual policy. It's like listening to sports commentators sizing up the sportsball teams in a World Cup competition:

I am very new to this #AI stuff, like many of us I guess.
I have had an interesting morning so far - read about AI solving an #OpenMiddle #maths problem, then listened to today's podcast on #TheDetail and it is also about #AI I have learned more! #learning #Curious https://www.newsroom.co.nz/podcast-the-detail/ais-new-frontier-works-of-art-and-human-like-chatbots

The 18 Oct edition of The Detail podcast mentions household cleaners that come in powder form, instead of watered down in a plastic bottle. This requires a lot less container space and energy to transport, resulting in a much lower carbon footprint:

I can't believe economists are still telling the Just So story about cash money emerging from barter economies. A story that was thoroughly and quite publicly debunked by David Graeber in his 2011 book Debt. So even more disappointing that there are still journalists accepting it without question. Here's a recent example from the RNZ podcast The Detail:

Am I the only person who thinks it's delusional to be talking about gene editing grass so farmed animals fart less methane? Are we really that desperate to avoid changing our diets and our economic dependence on exporting the products of mass animal exploitation?
