💔 The Red Badge of Courage 🩸

It was a year ago that my brother passed away and I'm honoring his memory by reading this novel by Stephen Crane. When we were young my brother was a bit obsessed by the Civil War. Our family would visit the war sites constantly on our family trips. He dressed as a Union Soldier for Halloween and we would often play 'Civil War Games' in our back yard. Playing with my brother was always combined with little history lessons! I recall reading the Classics Illustrated comicbook version of this book with my brother (he probably read it TO me) but I have never read the book.

Growth of the Soil (Markens Grøde)

When I saw that Norway's entry for the 2027 Oscar race was a film version of Knut Hamsun's 1917 Nobel Prize winning novel I immediately purchased a copy of the book. It wasn't until after I had begun reading this epic story that I learned the sad history of the author as a Nazi supporter + Hitler admirer. Thankfully there was no evidence of this sinister past in his writing ... in fact I was surprised to see the characters here grappling with issues of women's rights during one specific episode. I look forward to seeing director Hans Petter Moland's take on the book

Confederates In The Attic

Just read this wonderful witty + still relevant 1998 non-fiction book written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz which examines The South's ongoing fascination with the Civil War. I couldn't help but feel like it was written with one eye on the future almost 30 years ago ...

Raising the Titanic

Marta Molnar's 3rd book in her Light & Life Series which highlights women in history who have not received the recognition their contributions deserve. In this case Helen Churchill Candee - American author + feminist, but perhaps best remembered as a survivor from theTitanic.

The book uses dual timelines, intertwining a present-day research team hoping to uncover the names of unidentified victims of the sinking, with the story of Candee herself. While a great page turner, for me the modern tale suffered in comparison to Candee's fascinating life!

The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Just finished reading this excellent 1912 novel by James Weldon Johnson - the fictional account of a young biracial man living in the post-Reconstruction era of America. The title of the book is a bit misleading since throughout most of the lead character's story he is exploring his place in society with full acknowledgment of his true racial identity.

Weldon was a writer + civil rights activist - an early leader of the NAACP. He was known during the Harlem Renaissance for his poems + wrote the lyrics for "Lift Every Voice and Sing", which later became known as the Black National Anthem.

📚 James Baldwin on Giovanni's Room (1956) 📚

I just finished Giovanni's Room and it has found a space on my favorite books of all time list. Perhaps I should have read this novel 40 years ago when I was in my mid 20s - but I'm not at all upset that I only discovered it now. I'm sure that it resonated in quite a different way for this 60 something single man.
