Made some more progress on the implementation of the “stoptimes” API from MOTIS in Maps.
Now actually showing departures (or arrivals) in the place details when clicking on a “public transit-type“ place (station etc.), when there's data available in Transitous.
The rows still only shows the transit mode icon and line number/name (e.g. missing time, destination and so on…)#gnomemaps #gnome #motis #transitous #PublicTransport #PublicTransit

Just added a first version of a contributing guide for Maps:

Cool that Transitous now has schedule data for transit in Tbilisi, Georgia. In a couple of weeks it's exactly 15 years ago I was there on a work trip just about a month after started working for PrimeKey!
Would be kinda nice to visit again.
(I wanted to get a trip with one of the gondola (aerial way) lines for the screenshot, but got no results for that (I think they should be in the timetable data)

Attended a photo presentation about connection buses to the Stockholm metro (and the period before that), up until 1967 by Stefan Back from Svenska spårvägssällskapet held at Spårvägsmuseet (Stockholm transport museum).

Pickled herring and snaps for lunch. And it was snowing wet snow earlier in the morning. So it's pretty similar to a Christmas eve… 🌨️🌧️

Experimenting with showing platform information for the public transit itineraries in Maps (when available from datasets).
Maybe these labels spelling out "Departing from…" and so on are a bit "wordy"… -
Predicting maglev trains might reach a break-through during 2026, I think it might be time to change the “default generic” icon in the route mode switcher widget for transit in Maps from the current train to a new variant!

Rolled the releases for GNOME 50 today (a bit early, but I'll be busy all day tomorrow):
Maps 50.0
libshumate 1.6.0and also a (small) bugfix 49.5 on the (old) stable branch.
Didn't yet do a write-up about the new stuff, guess that'll have to be done sometime soonish, too… 😎

Very early PoC implementing the “stoptimes” endpoint in MOTIS in Maps for (eventually) displaying departures/arrivals for public transit stations/stops from Transitous

Just rolled the RC tarballs for Maps and libshumate for the upcoming GNOME 50 relase
gnome-maps 50.rc
libshumate 1.6.rcChanges include support for getting localized results for public transit routing (using Transitous).

Now that the new release of MOTIS with translation support has been deployed for Transitous, I implemented support for passing the language of user's locale(s) to the API.
This shows an itinerary rendered in Japanese and in the second example with romanized names (this relies on translation.txt being present in the corresponding GTFS feed data, though).#transitous #gnomemaps #mapstodon #PublicTransit #localization

Found this old poster I hadn't had up on the wall since moving from the apartment I used to live in until 2009.
Featuring a panoramic “aerial photo-like” view of central Uppsala from 1994 drawn by Madgalena Koronyńska in 1994.
I also tried reproduce the view in Maps.
Some things have changed in 32 years (like the house we live in now was some 15 years before being built. -
Just rolled beta releases of Maps and libshumate (50.beta and 1.6.beta) for the upcoming GNOME 50 release, and also stable releases (49.4, 48.9, and 1.5.3, 1.4.1 respectively) before traveling to Brussels for FOSDEM tommorow evening.
One improvement in 50.beta consists of showing more text from the article extract from Wikipedia in “desktop mode” when there is more space.

Officially “made use of” the year 2026 yesterday, when updating the copyright year in the about dialog for Maps.
And also, btw added a source file with copyright year 2026 some week ago (a specialization of the Place class for handling “stop places” from Transitous/MOTIS, enabling to mark places from public transit itineraries as bookmarks/favorites.

Just tagged Maps 50.alpha and libshumate 1.6.alpha for GNOME 50:
Containing, among others, the new sidebar redesign, public transit journey redesign, using Transitous for all public transit routingm, and porting of UI templates to Blueprint for Maps.
And for libshumate the option to compile without the vector renderer has been removed, the vector renderer has gained support for "global-state" expressions.

Unpacked some old model railway stuff from my old Märklin and Roco sets after the move. Maybe eventually we'll actually have some space for a very minimal actual working setup (like a bare minimum oval on a smaller table).
In the meanwhile I put the models on display in a bookshelf that has some space left after I donated some old programming litterature to the "library" we keep at the #Keyfactor office in Solna… -
Did a talk about Transitous at Update Computer Club today (in Swedish) (also mentioning some clients implemeting the API, such as #gnomemaps #kdeitinerary #bimba )

Finally got momentum on the redesigned I planned for Maps for GNOME 50, redesigning the sidebar a bit (taking a bit inspiration from Nucleus) with the aim of ultimatly it use an AdwMultiLayoutView using a bottom sheet in narrow/mobile mode. And showing place info in there as well…
Right now in a state of a bit "first break it, then fix it"… 😄

I just thought about adding a Mastodon link in my LinkedIn profile (I'm not particularily active there, but maybe it could draw someone to the Fediverse from the silo…). The closest I could find to setting a social media link was the "Instant messaging" options. Those had some interesting options 😄

Now with the latest MOTIS releases we can run pre-processing Lua scripts on GTFS feed data in Transitous.
I added a script to add route colors to some of the routes in the Swedish national feed from Trafiklab. Also set the route type for Landskrona's bus route 3 to trolley bus.

As I already happened to tag 49.rc for Maps already last Saturday, although the actual release date for the RC should have been today, I did in additional import of the highway shields defintions from OSM-Americana. So now we will also support shield for national and regional roads in Argentina.
Also rolled stable point releases for the 48 and 47 branches…

Implemented loading the user's account avatar, and displaying it in place of the "default user avatar" symbolic icon in the OpenStreetMap account setup dialog (for OAuth setup of your OSM account for editing POIs in Maps). After a suggestion by @pigeon_ about using the "user details" OSM JSON API.
Though, this will not be GNOME 49 material, as we're passed the UI freeze deadline by now…
-
Tarballs are now out for GNOME 49 beta release for Maps and libshumate.
Among the new stuff for Maps:
It now shows the localized highways shields (when definitions are available) in the place details for road labelsThe POI search interface has an option for searching for vegan/vegetarian restaurants (this was an old proposal I got IRL at GUADEC 2023, but kinda forgot).
And in libshumate it is now possible to (non-center) align map markers.
