  2. 🇪🇬🚝🌆 Commercial service has begun on the East of #Nile #Monorail in Greater #Cairo, marking Africa’s first monorail system. Delivered by Alstom with Orascom Construction and #Arab Contractors, the 56-kilometre line has 22 stations, 16 now operational, linking East Cairo to the New Administrative Capital. The driverless Innovia system using CBTC GoA4 signalling has capacity of up to 45,000 passengers per hour per direction, easing congestion and improving connectivity across key districts. Journey times between El Moshir Tantawi and Justice City stations are reduced from around 1 hour 20 minutes by road to about 40 minutes. The project is also the first in Africa to feature platform screen doors. Vehicles were manufactured in Derby, #UK, with testing and commissioning led locally, with around 98% #Egyptian workforce involvement, supporting Egypt’s Vision 2030 and long-term #sustainable #urban #mobility goals.

"Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
Like a genuine, bona fide AFL, roof-topped stadium
    What'd I say? Stadium!
    What's it called? Stadium!
    That's right! Stadium
    Stadium Stadium Stadium
I hear those things are very pricey
But rejecting it makes our election dicey
Is there a chance that it won't fit?
Not on your life, my silly git
    What about us brain-dead slobs?
    You'll be given cushy jobs
Were you sent here by the Devil?
No, good sir, I'm on the level
The ring came off my James Boag can
Take my pen knife, my good man
    I swear it's Tassie's only choice
Throw up your hands and raise your voice
    Stadium
    What's it called? Stadium
    Once again Stadium
But our health care is still all cracked and broken
Sorry, lefties, the mob has spoken
    Stadium! Stadium! Stadium! Stadium!
    Stadi, d'oh!"

  16. An outrageous claim and the rabbit hole that followed

After the trip to Genoa, I went to Rimini, on the other side of Italy, and visited the Italia in Miniatura theme park because it has a monorail. A simple loop around the park, with one station about as far from the entrance as it’s possible to get, it was a fun way to view the detailed scale models of famous Italian buildings below. But one thing caught my attention: a claim that this was Italy’s first electric monorail. Now, while the park was opened in 1970, the monorail wasn’t added until 2001 or so. This claim is somewhat dubious, when you consider that, not too far away, the Mirabilandia theme park had an electric monorail that operated between 1992 and 2019. Another theme park, Gardaland, has had an electric monorail since 1990.

So, what was the first electric monorail in Italy?

Well, Expo ’61 had an ALWEG monorail that was essentially the same as the one in Seattle.

The Turin monorail. Jean-Henri Manara, Wikimedia Commons, License CC BY-SA 2.0

One of the stations still exists, but my trip to Genoa reminded me that this isn’t the first electric monorail in Italy by a long way.

The “Italian Colonial International Exhibition of Marine and Marine Hygiene” in 1914 had a quite impressive monorail, known as the “Telfer”, running along the seafront. A poster from the time describes it as a “Ferrovia Elletrica”, so definitely electric! After the exhibition closed, the monorail remained in use for a few years moving coal and goods around.

During my visit, a friend and I tried to trace the route, and see if anything remained. Unfortunately, the way was blocked by a small military base, but we did find the spot where a large arch had been smashed into a building to allow the monorail to go through the Stella Battery.

Roger Farnworth has written an excellent, copiously illustrated, article about the Telfer, so I will simply refer you there: Genoa – a Telfer

And that is, probably, the first electric monorail in Italy. The only earlier monorail I know about is a steam-powered, cable-hauled one that went up Mount Vesuvius.

  19. Did you know that the Toronto Zoo used to run a monorail (ish)?

The 5.6km transit system closed down in 1994. However the concrete structure that supported the rail is still around in the middle of the forest near Scarborough/Rouge Park.

I knew it was reachable because of an old reddit post and also because we can see it from Google Maps.

But I didn't know "how" to get there. So with a few friends we decided to find out

  21. Every time I try to read an article in the @HalifaxExaminer I am reminded how paywalls may be to blame for a decent amount of the working-class media-fueled biases we are seeing these days.

I am not picking on the Examiner specifically, honest! It's just that they are in my feed and seeing an interesting article I can't read always reminds me just why I hate paywalls for their self-righteous and sanctimonious classism. "You ain't wearing a tie, you ain't gettin' in". This could equally apply to the New York Times, the Washington Post and thousands of other local news outlets. They love their paywalls! Even the word oozes exclusivity and exclusion. Roll it around your mouth and say it a few times. Paywall, paywall, paywall... Build a big, beautiful paywall to keep the moochers out.

Like many in a poor province or state (and just about all professional misinformation experts), I can't afford a subscription to these news services - And I can't go to the library to read them either, because that's not a thing any more.

Apparently decent, written, political journalism is just for the middle classes with disposable income now.

Is it any wonder that so many of the people who most need to see good political writing can't, because they have to pay for it? There's a reason why you hardly ever see paywalls on the right wing sites. They understand the living situations of the demographic they are targeting.

I don't really have an answer for how non-sensationalist newspapers can exist without paywalls, that's not my area of business. I suspect a "pay what you can afford" model would theoretically work but at this point it's probably a bit late. The providers are set in their middle class business models and the consumers have picked their preferred snake oil vendor.

Right! Happy belated Labour Day. I am off to Rebel News and Twitter to see what I should think about the Western Provinces and CPP.

It's also the first lunch break I've been able to take in a long while, so it is what it is. Loving it so far and need to learn more, make some adjustments to the bellows frame as I accidentally knocked the front standard giving a little wierd dpeth of field when it should have been locked.

Oh, and developing. No more sloppy habits! clean fingers and clear dust before scanning in. 🤦
