  1. It's so grating to hear Americans whine about high gas prices. Get over your myopic individualism and build some forfuckssake.

  3. It will be impossible for Ontario to implement innovative (in terms of North American standards) and effective #PublicTransit as long as Ford remains in office. Ripping out #BikeLanes so we can add more cars means he would never replace vehicle lanes with a Tram or LRT network.

And recently they have drastically reduced Go Train schedules on important transit corridors, forcing more people into cars on highways.

  8. Good Morning #Canada
Toronto's Line 5, referred to as the Eglinton Crosstown, has been open for over 6 months and the general consensus locally is that it's pretty good. This excellent video provides a review of the LRT, including the supporting network, benefits, negatives, and Toronto's overall design philosophy for #PublicTransit. It rightly points out Canada is generally bad at design and is still in love with cars.

It is probably about car dependency, car-centered areas. Like in the US where in many towns without a car one would struggle to do anything: getting to the grocery store, getting back from the store, reaching the other river bank as many bridges are motor vehicles only.

People can’t live without cars in such places. Even food banks have huge lines of cars, four "lanes". Some homeless people drive cars as well. Imagine the closest grocery store being 1 hour walking distance away, and the weather may be extremely hot/cold.

Many such areas don’t even have sidewalks or anything for walking at all. At the same time so called "jay-walking" is prohibited by law. The term "jaywalking" actually was invented by the cars lobby in the early 20th century. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaywalki
Moving around by walking is extremely inconvenient, dangerous, taking ridiculous amounts of time, basically incompatible with everyday activities.

Also the parking lots, roads, intersections take up huge chunks of the city. Consider how much longer it takes to walk somewhere compared to what it could be without all these. Urban areas could look very different if they were human-centered and Points Of Interest were packed tightly.

And the bigger the city, the more space car infrastructure takes up. More lanes, wider intersections, parking lots can have up to many thousands spots, highways, freeways, interchanges of ridiculous sizes and shapes.

The topic is huge, what I mentioned is just the tip. Think of what you see around every day. Also all the noise. And danger it brings to everyone, not just drivers. The number of so called "accidents", another convenient term for the horrible things that happen everyday.

The areas which are pedestrian-friendly, bicycle friendly, have public transportation tend to have happier residents, more attraction points, more small businesses, more street life, way better air quality, less noise among other benefits.
Also social connections and interaction happen there and not on a 4-lane highway.

  15. The Loveliest

    The woman
    with a
    double chin
    and fat fingers
    around plastic bags
    plops down
    in the seat
    across the aisle
    and blocks
    my view of the
    goddess
    whose magazine
    is filled with
    clothes
    she'd fill out
    quite nicely.

    The pretty
    and the ugly
    sit side by side
    and I wonder
    who is
    the loveliest
    in God's eyes.

  16. And I gotta tell you, Tacoma people, this is the easiest place in Oly to get to from Tacoma. Just park at the 512 Park 'n' Ride, hop the 610 **FOR FREE**, endure/enjoy a leisurely journey southward, then walk like literally a minute from the downtown Oly transit center to the community center.

  17. More and more #PublicTransit agencies have their own reloadable plastic cards instead of paper tickets. I have a collection from numerous cities. What almost all of them #fail in, is writing the name of their #city or area onto the card.

That is #frustrating. It is unclear from looking at the pile of Tap, Arc, Compass, Charlie, Presto, or Whatnot cards, where they could be useful.

  22. @nwchapman And this is announced right after #CBS did a glamor segment on their news doc program #SundayMorning promoting #Waymo this past weekend . . . 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I'm not a Luddite but I am one of those who say they'll never use an #AutomomousVehicle or #SelfDrivingCar no matter how safe they say they are.

    There are other options & if I need to get somewhere & I can't use my own car to do so, I'll #Walk and/or take #PublicTransit and/or #RideSharing and/or #Uber or #Lyft instead. 🤷‍♂️

  23. Ferry-osa: A Transit Saga

Yesterday we had a transit adventure to my family’s house over in Kitsap to belatedly celebrate my niece’s birthday. The weather was cold but clear (other than fog crossing the West Seattle Bridge) so a pretty perfect day for the crossing. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of taking pictures of the water and mountains around here!

Our transfers were all fairly cooperative despite the Sunday schedule as we took the 1 bus downtown from Queen Anne, the C line to West Seattle, and the ferry from Fauntleroy to Southworth.

The celebration itself was brief; my sister made a tasty tofu mac and yeez lunch, I won a game of Sagrada, and I helped my dad with a tech project. Then we reversed our route (other than grabbing a 13 up the hill with an errand stop at TJs before walking home). Really the only downside of this journey is the long stop at Vashon when we just want to go straight across.

  31. We got on and off the G Line a few more times. We happened across a block party celebrating the G Line RapidRide expansion with live music and doughnuts and swag. So much swag! I got a Boop the Orca tchotchke. Another party member donated to the Transit Riders Union and got a sweet tee shirt.

  32. From there, Andrew led us to the first G Line RapidRide stop, which I want to say is on 1st Avenue? We rode it to the downtown branch of the #Seattle public library, one of my very favorite buildings. We wandered the library a little before catching the G Line again for further adventures.

  33. “Epic” got tossed around indiscriminately for so long I fear it’s lost all meaning, but I can think of no better word to describe today’s #Seattle adventure, instigated by my most indefatigable transit maniac friend Andrew. He gathered a group of like-minded enthusiasts to celebrate the opening of King County Metro’s #RapidRide G Line, and it ruled.

  35. Toronto council sped up construction work on the Gardiner. Why won’t it do the same for the TTC?

From @GraphicMatt in the Toronto Star:

🚇 "1.1 million, the average number of weekday riders on Toronto’s subway lines"

🚋 "Toronto’s streetcar system carried about 211,000 riders on the average weekday in 2023."

🚗 "the Gardiner probably carries about 182,000 people a day."
