  1. RE: masto.canadiancivil.com/@reece

An interesting article, it categorises the different reasons why the english speaking world public transit costs much more to build. Probably a good summary, but it sidesteps the core cultural reason – the anglosphere struggles to *look* at the outside world – which is a bit ironic when the core segmentation is cultural thing (english language). #publictransport #anglosphere #publictransit

  6. I live on a street that does not have sidewalks (le sad) and on a curve where people speed a lot. In the last two days, I talked to one dog walker and one runner about walking/runner against traffic so they can see what's coming at them. This genuinely didn't seem like something that had occurred to them.

I'm glad I said something, hopefully it came across as a helpful friendly neighbor and not a mansplainer. I thought this was well known approach for walking on the street, but just in case it's not, this is a PSA. It is infuriating that this burden falls on the pedestrian, I wish I lived off of an urban trail with convenient public transit.

  11. When you don’t support more active forms of #transportation like #publictransit and #cycling, this is the world we are supporting: #cars congesting much of the road. This is Marshall road clogged up from Sumas Way all the way to McKenzie road on a Wednesday afternoon. If you just add another lane for #singleoccupancy cars, you get the exact same issue: just another lane of #congestion only slightly shorter. But if you were instead to put in a lane for #buses and #cyclists, then we would have a new lane that actually moves people keep quickly than just another car lane. And when public #transit becomes faster and more reliable than cars, more people will pick transit over their cars, and that in turn also makes the road better for those who need to use cars for things like transporting items as they will have less congestion in their lanes from more people using the bus instead of a car for transporting people. Communities around BC are headed to #municipal #elections this fall, and if #Abbotsford wants to get out of its congestion issues, it’s time to vote for a #mayor and #council that will improve transit and other forms of active transportation that will get our roads moving quicker, like more #buslanes as well as brining the #Skytrain or another two-way passenger #rail service from Metro #Vancouver into Abbotsford. Let’s build transportation in this city that’s better designed to move people around #town, not one to move the car companies’ profits.

  12. Who Framed Public Transit in LA?

Rodger Rabbit is about more than WB and Disney chars goofing off in the same world. What you might not have noticed is its message about how Los Angeles' public transit system was one world class, until it was sabotaged. There's more to the highway plot.

  15. #Cowichan Valley residents adapt to life without #PublicTransit as strike enters 4th month.
#PeopleWithDisabilities , #students & #seniors struggle with the lack of options for #transportation in the Cowichan Valley.

#UniforLocal114 & #UniforLocal333BC the union representing 44 drivers, mechanics& cleaners, have been on strike since Feb. 8. They are advocating for wages similar to their counterparts in Victoria, better access to washroom facilities & more consistent breaks. #Workers have since voted against a new contract with their employer, #TransDev & the strike reaches 105 days, there is still no end in sight. As a result of the strike, #transit in the Cowichan Valley has been on hold, interfering with where and how people move through the community. #HandyDart services are still available but only for medical appointments related to renal dialysis, cancer treatment & multiple sclerosis.

  20. The City of #Boston plans to remove the Boylston St. bus lane because it “has not functioned as intended”—why is that? Because drivers who don't care about getting buses & emergency responders stuck in traffic illegally use it as free parking! Instead of ticketing, #MayorWu is enabling it!

  21. While January seems like a year unto itself, we hope that you’re ready to keep supporting public transit! Our next meetup will be on February 15, and we’re going to try something different. Instead of talking over beers, we’re going to discuss transit advocacy over coffee!

We’ll use this meetup as an opportunity to catch up with each other, prioritize advocacy projects, and maybe even workshop ideas for articles and op-eds to submit to local news organizations.

  23. Public transport in the global South could leapfrog into a sustainable future with battery swapping.

Technologies like this have the potential to revolutionize urban mobility.

  24. The #BCGreenParty made the first big splash of the 2024 provincial #election campaign with a major commitment to expand #PublicTransit, including a promise of “free public transit, province-wide” that has been widely criticized as being too costly.

While shifting to #FreeTransit for everyone, everywhere could be fiscally and logistically challenging in the short run, BC needs bold solutions to address the congestion clogging up our cities, shrink our societal dependence on cars and improve affordability of #transportation.

Free transit would need to be combined with major transportation investments to bolster local #transit systems and interconnect them across the province, as recommended in our recent #ConnectingBC report. In that report we call for doubling the number of buses in BC within five years and tripling within 10 (both of which are echoed in the #GreenParty platform), in addition to new #rail and #ferry infrastructure and expansion of free transit.

  28. It’s been a minute since we were had a transit meetup. We’re excited to announce that our next meetup will be on June 8 right after the Eastridge to BART Regional Connector groundbreaking ceremony!

  29. On this #TransDayOfVisiblity, I want to specifically highlight Bernie Wagenblast.

She is one of the famous announcer voices for New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority! (See video for demonstration)

From her wikipedia page: Bernie Wagenblast is a transportation journalist, radio personality and voice-over artist. She is the founder and editor of the Transportation Communications Newsletter. She also edits The AASHTO Daily Transportation Update, published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and hosts AASHTO's ETAP Podcast and the ITE Talks Transportation podcast for the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
