  1. I live on a street that does not have sidewalks (le sad) and on a curve where people speed a lot. In the last two days, I talked to one dog walker and one runner about walking/runner against traffic so they can see what's coming at them. This genuinely didn't seem like something that had occurred to them.

I'm glad I said something, hopefully it came across as a helpful friendly neighbor and not a mansplainer. I thought this was well known approach for walking on the street, but just in case it's not, this is a PSA. It is infuriating that this burden falls on the pedestrian, I wish I lived off of an urban trail with convenient public transit.

It is probably about car dependency, car-centered areas. Like in the US where in many towns without a car one would struggle to do anything: getting to the grocery store, getting back from the store, reaching the other river bank as many bridges are motor vehicles only.

People can’t live without cars in such places. Even food banks have huge lines of cars, four "lanes". Some homeless people drive cars as well. Imagine the closest grocery store being 1 hour walking distance away, and the weather may be extremely hot/cold.

Many such areas don’t even have sidewalks or anything for walking at all. At the same time so called "jay-walking" is prohibited by law. The term "jaywalking" actually was invented by the cars lobby in the early 20th century. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaywalki
Moving around by walking is extremely inconvenient, dangerous, taking ridiculous amounts of time, basically incompatible with everyday activities.

Also the parking lots, roads, intersections take up huge chunks of the city. Consider how much longer it takes to walk somewhere compared to what it could be without all these. Urban areas could look very different if they were human-centered and Points Of Interest were packed tightly.

And the bigger the city, the more space car infrastructure takes up. More lanes, wider intersections, parking lots can have up to many thousands spots, highways, freeways, interchanges of ridiculous sizes and shapes.

The topic is huge, what I mentioned is just the tip. Think of what you see around every day. Also all the noise. And danger it brings to everyone, not just drivers. The number of so called "accidents", another convenient term for the horrible things that happen everyday.

The areas which are pedestrian-friendly, bicycle friendly, have public transportation tend to have happier residents, more attraction points, more small businesses, more street life, way better air quality, less noise among other benefits.
Also social connections and interaction happen there and not on a 4-lane highway.

Something different this morning - an indepth look at Vancouver's #PublicTransit expansion to Langley. Big mass transit projects are relatively rare and governments still put to much focus on the car instead of liveable and walkable cities. This 14 km extension will transform Langley and connect it to Vancouver without increased vehicle traffic.

  4. Sorry, no.

Yes, you might need to work on a morning train - totally fair.

Yes, you might need to use a laptop - not a problem.

But for the love of all that is holy - take off your fake nail extensions so everybody doesn’t need to tolerate the incessant plastic on plastic tapping that comes from someone without any touch typing skills.

  5. I'm no connoisseur, but I've not seen this style of handmade toy bus. Almost looks double-decker.

It's nice to see kids playing with public transport toys.

  6. Why do all #publictransit apps seem to be designed by people who have never ridden public transit? It's like they took one look at #googlemaps and just thought "oh shit I guess we need something like that" without considering that Busses/Trains Aren't Cars (or bikes/pedestrians, who are basically "cars with different weights and allowed paths" as far as navigation is concerned).

  7. It’s that time again! Eligible sixth- through 12th-grade students may now apply for the Student Transit Pass Program for unlimited free bus rides and discounted BART fares. Once the passes are granted, students may enjoy the transit benefits until they graduate from high school. alamedapost.com/news/middle-an
