It is probably about car dependency, car-centered areas. Like in the US where in many towns without a car one would struggle to do anything: getting to the grocery store, getting back from the store, reaching the other river bank as many bridges are motor vehicles only.People can’t live without cars in such places. Even food banks have huge lines of cars, four "lanes". Some homeless people drive cars as well. Imagine the closest grocery store being 1 hour walking distance away, and the weather may be extremely hot/cold.
Many such areas don’t even have sidewalks or anything for walking at all. At the same time so called "jay-walking" is prohibited by law. The term "jaywalking" actually was invented by the cars lobby in the early 20th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaywalking
Moving around by walking is extremely inconvenient, dangerous, taking ridiculous amounts of time, basically incompatible with everyday activities.Also the parking lots, roads, intersections take up huge chunks of the city. Consider how much longer it takes to walk somewhere compared to what it could be without all these. Urban areas could look very different if they were human-centered and Points Of Interest were packed tightly.
And the bigger the city, the more space car infrastructure takes up. More lanes, wider intersections, parking lots can have up to many thousands spots, highways, freeways, interchanges of ridiculous sizes and shapes.
The topic is huge, what I mentioned is just the tip. Think of what you see around every day. Also all the noise. And danger it brings to everyone, not just drivers. The number of so called "accidents", another convenient term for the horrible things that happen everyday.
The areas which are pedestrian-friendly, bicycle friendly, have public transportation tend to have happier residents, more attraction points, more small businesses, more street life, way better air quality, less noise among other benefits.
Also social connections and interaction happen there and not on a 4-lane highway.#Cars #Car #City #Urban #Streets

Something different this morning - an indepth look at Vancouver's #PublicTransit expansion to Langley. Big mass transit projects are relatively rare and governments still put to much focus on the car instead of liveable and walkable cities. This 14 km extension will transform Langley and connect it to Vancouver without increased vehicle traffic. -
I'm no connoisseur, but I've not seen this style of handmade toy bus. Almost looks double-decker.
It's nice to see kids playing with public transport toys.

When you don’t support more active forms of #transportation like #publictransit and #cycling, this is the world we are supporting: #cars congesting much of the road. This is Marshall road clogged up from Sumas Way all the way to McKenzie road on a Wednesday afternoon. If you just add another lane for #singleoccupancy cars, you get the exact same issue: just another lane of #congestion only slightly shorter. But if you were instead to put in a lane for #buses and #cyclists, then we would have a new lane that actually moves people keep quickly than just another car lane. And when public #transit becomes faster and more reliable than cars, more people will pick transit over their cars, and that in turn also makes the road better for those who need to use cars for things like transporting items as they will have less congestion in their lanes from more people using the bus instead of a car for transporting people. Communities around BC are headed to #municipal #elections this fall, and if #Abbotsford wants to get out of its congestion issues, it’s time to vote for a #mayor and #council that will improve transit and other forms of active transportation that will get our roads moving quicker, like more #buslanes as well as brining the #Skytrain or another two-way passenger #rail service from Metro #Vancouver into Abbotsford. Let’s build transportation in this city that’s better designed to move people around #town, not one to move the car companies’ profits.

Attempted and successful library tourism in Edinburgh and Northern England
Beyond the NLS, Scotland has various libraries within the country. There’s over twenty public libraries in Edinburgh alone. The day after I visited the NLS, I traveled to Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RGBE) by bus. This garden is akin to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. It has a beautiful plant collection, and a special library. However, the library isn’t accessible from the garden, a clear barrier to entry. Furthermore, the science, learning and archives section is only accessible by appointment. That is too bad. If it had been accessible from the garden I may have visited it. There are museums and various collections within the garden as well. Every plant has a specific identifying number associated with it.
Note: This serves as the beginning of my series, which begins, chronologically, with my guest post on Reel Librarians, on February 11th, entitled “Edinburgh and the National Library of Scotland: Library tourism redux.” It will be reposted on here over a month later. There will be two more parts of this series, focusing on my continued library tourism in London and Belgium coming later this year. Links to those will be added to this post later.
The RGBE website describes the library as providing the “basic tools” to support research and organization of biodiversity into a “manageable framework to underpin ecological and biological research.” This makes it even more unfortunate that the “extensive” library, said to be the Scottish national reference collection for “specialist botanical and horticultural resources” with over one million items, cannot be accessed from the garden itself. A pamphlet purchased for two pounds says directly: “no access from Garden,” putting this barrier into writing.
Photograph of part of a pamphlet noting that the RGBE library cannot be accessed from the garden (My photograph)The second part of my vacation involved staying one week at HF Holidays’ Derwent Bank house, which sits on Derwent Water lake, to hike throughout the acclaimed and well-known Lake District, in Cumbria. Some of the hikes were arduous, although that might not be the case if you were physically fit, unlike myself, who wasn’t as fit as other hikers. I wanted to hike there as it was blazing hot in Baltimore, where I live. Other hikers were primarily from England and the Netherlands. The hikes often involved going through sheep grazing areas, avoiding sheep poop in the process, with beautiful views, and a visit to the Castlerigg Stone Circle.
On the fifth day of hiking, on July 31st, the coach bus I was riding in, with fellow hikers passed by the Keswick library. It looked to be one big room filled with desktop computers. Further research indicated that this library offers printing, loanable dementia bags and storysacks, hearing aid batteries, and more. It’s located off the town’s main street, with some nearby parking lots (they call them “car parks” in England), plus a bus station 200 yards from the library. It also hosts board games, a Lego club, jigsaw puzzle building, mindful coloring, books to help with well-being and health, and more.
Lastly was a bookshelf almost akin to the Little Free “Library” collections in the U.S. (but without serving a physical manifestation of a “desire to privatize the world”), at the Penrith train station. See you at the next post, where my journey continues, in London!

I'm really content with how 2025 went down: First and foremost I'm father of a healthy child now and experienced lots of exciting new things this year. Coming to the sporty side 2025 was a more active year for me than 2024 and as a result I lost about 10 kilograms.
Let's look at some stats:
- I ran 588 km (cumulative elevation gain 5500 m) in 66 hours and 7 minutes (in Germany and Austria).
- I cycled 567 km (cumulative elevation gain 8600 m) on my gravel bike in 29 hours and 21 minutes (all in Germany).
- I hiked 462 km (cumulative elevation gain 13700 m) in 105 hours and 29 minutes (in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy).
- I had 529 rides in public transit accumulating to more than 13000 km in roughly 228 hours (in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy).I'm hyped about all the adventures, challenges and wonders waiting in 2026.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — "Greater Portland Metro says it is launching a new bus service connecting Scarborough and Portland along Route 1.
"The service is expected to run seven days a week and provide access to medical facilities, shopping, and regional employment centers. Exact stops and schedules are still being finalized, according to a news release.
"The Maine Turnpike Authority approved $3.5 million over five years to support the project.
"Scarborough Town Manager Thomas Hall said the route supports the town's transportation goals and could help reduce traffic.
"Public meetings will be scheduled to allow residents to provide feedback, the release stated. A survey is also available here.
"Greater Portland Metro serves Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth, Yarmouth, Freeport, Brunswick, Gorham, Scarborough, and Bath."

A shame that the Metro Vancouver Interurban Tram system was completely scrapped in the fifties to make room for roads. Decades later the Skytrain system rebuilt some of these routes but at a much higher price point because of the elevated tracks.

I often pass Park Royal station on the way into London, and I’ve always thought it was such a cute building. It was built in 1931 and was designed by the architects Herbert Welch and Felix Lander, inspired by the work of prolific tube station designer Charles Holden - I’m planning to paint one of his soon too, but you’ll have to wait and see which one!
As for the lil guys who’ve just arrived here: the one on the right is leading the way because they’re on their way to his family home, and he’s introducing his husband to his parents for the first time. Suffice to say they’re a little nervous, but I’m sure they’ll survive the ordeal x

ION EXTENSION DELAYED
The future of ION extension to the city of Cambridge remains uncertain.
The Region of Waterloo council originally approved the Light Rail Transit (LRT) ION system in 2009. It was to be a link across Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge, with a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) linking Kitchener and Cambridge.
Plans for Stage 2 ION, bringing the LRT transport system from Fairway Station in Kitchener through the urban centres of Cambridge to downtown Galt, were officially announced in June 2019, but the project has since been subject to significant delays.
A report to Cambridge City Council in 2023, estimated the expansion cost at $4.5 billion, a number that had nearly tripled since 2021. In June 2024, Matthew O’Neil, manager of Rapid Transit Coordination at the Region of Waterloo, said he expected construction to begin in 2032, seven years later than initial estimates.
On Apr. 3, Grand River Transit (GRT) revealed their ten-year business plan, which made no reference to Stage 2 ION expansion.
Councillors expressed frustration with the continued ambiguity surrounding the project. On The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NewsRadio Kitchener, former Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig was asked if Cambridge is being shortchanged on transit.
“Of course we are,” he said. “We don’t have [an] LRT, we don’t have a GO train, and we’re paying for the LRT in KW […] and we’re wondering when is ours going to come to the city of Cambridge?”
Stage 2 ION plans were thrown into further doubt on May 9, when Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett endorsed the notion of rapid bus transit over LRT expansion. In a Cambridge council meeting, Liggett mentioned the option was raised by Waterloo Region council staff members that day.
“I know that’s earth-shattering news, but that was an open session of regional council today,” she said.
Liggett went on to say that the $4.5 billion cost of LRT expansion is not a realistic prospect.
“That’s an impossibility. We don’t have that much money in our budget in any given five-year span to put towards something like this,” she said.
The impact of the LRT in Waterloo and Kitchener has been positive. In 2023, $429 million in new building permits were issued in land along the LRT line. A growing percentage of the region’s population are reportedly moving to locations within a 10-minute walk of an LRT stop.
Cambridge councillors in favour of the expansion believe that it would have a significant impact on city rejuvenation.
“The ION expansion would have a positive impact on private investment and city rejuvenation. Every report has predicted this, and we have seen firsthand how this happened for Kitchener and Waterloo along the ION Stage one1,” Pam Wolf, Cambridge city councillor, said in a statement.
Former councillor Rob Deutschmann noted the ION expansion could attract $5-10 billion in private investments along the area, according to Cambridge Chamber of Commerce estimates.
The Region of Waterloo council have confirmed that nothing has been finalised yet, with the Initial Business Case for Stage 2 ION to be presented to Cambridge City council in November.

"Local officials in #GreaterPortland are considering a system of #RapidTransit bus routes for the region.
"Under a draft proposal from the Greater Portland Council of Governments, dedicated bus lanes would provide express service through Portland, Westbrook and Gorham more quickly than traditional bus service, with stops along the way.
"The preferred route would start at the University of Southern Maine campus in Gorham, travel through downtown Westbrook and stop at the USM campus in Portland before heading down Congress Street and ending near the Eastern Promenade.
"The proposal envisions service every 10 minutes between Portland and Westbrook, and 20 minutes between Westbrook and Gorham.
"'That's frequent enough that you're not relying on a schedule anymore,' said Andrew Clark, transit program manager for #GPCOG. 'You're no longer planning your day around the bus schedule. You just know you can go out to the station, and the bus will be there in 10 minutes or something like that.'
"Clark said service every 10-20 minutes should also lure riders who wouldn't normally consider taking #PublicTransit.
"'I think people understand the role that transit can play in making our cities better, its role in reducing congestion, its role in better climate outcomes, better social equity outcomes,' he said.
"Greater Portland Metro would operate the proposed route, but the vehicles and stops would have a different look than the service's existing buses, Clark added.
"The proposed routes are still a long way away, Clark said. The cities of Portland, Westbrook and Gorham will need to decide how much road space can be freed up for dedicated bus lanes. The project will also need to secure federal funds for the new bus lanes and some new battery-powered vehicles.
"Local officials also eventually envision rapid transit routes to South Portland, Biddeford and Saco, Brunswick and Windham."

Columbia, MO is planning on adding microtransit to our city. It's a good stop forward, and it costs way less than an Uber, but I'm afraid it's gonna have issues. It seems like taking people to bus stops from their houses is a priority, and that they won't go very far. That won't fix the main issue with the buses, which is that it can take you up to three hours to get from one stop to another. It's not gonna be convenient for traveling across town if I still need to take the regular buses.
