An interesting article, it categorises the different reasons why the english speaking world public transit costs much more to build. Probably a good summary, but it sidesteps the core cultural reason – the anglosphere struggles to *look* at the outside world – which is a bit ironic when the core segmentation is cultural thing (english language). #publictransport #anglosphere #publictransit

The Loveliest
The woman
with a
double chin
and fat fingers
around plastic bags
plops down
in the seat
across the aisle
and blocks
my view of the
goddess
whose magazine
is filled with
clothes
she'd fill out
quite nicely.
The pretty
and the ugly
sit side by side
and I wonder
who is
the loveliest
in God's eyes.February 22, 2002

When you don’t support more active forms of #transportation like #publictransit and #cycling, this is the world we are supporting: #cars congesting much of the road. This is Marshall road clogged up from Sumas Way all the way to McKenzie road on a Wednesday afternoon. If you just add another lane for #singleoccupancy cars, you get the exact same issue: just another lane of #congestion only slightly shorter. But if you were instead to put in a lane for #buses and #cyclists, then we would have a new lane that actually moves people keep quickly than just another car lane. And when public #transit becomes faster and more reliable than cars, more people will pick transit over their cars, and that in turn also makes the road better for those who need to use cars for things like transporting items as they will have less congestion in their lanes from more people using the bus instead of a car for transporting people. Communities around BC are headed to #municipal #elections this fall, and if #Abbotsford wants to get out of its congestion issues, it’s time to vote for a #mayor and #council that will improve transit and other forms of active transportation that will get our roads moving quicker, like more #buslanes as well as brining the #Skytrain or another two-way passenger #rail service from Metro #Vancouver into Abbotsford. Let’s build transportation in this city that’s better designed to move people around #town, not one to move the car companies’ profits.

"When she returned after a year in Austria, [Marina] Hurtado rediscovered the limits to #PublicTransportation in the U.S., for example. It was no longer possible to jump on a #train and take a day trip to Prague or spend a weekend in Brugge.”

"Alongside the mobility hubs, the [Monterey County Zero Emissions Shared Mobility] study recommends creating #eBikeLibraries, which provide free or low-cost long-term lending for those who can’t afford an e-bike of their own. The study says the libraries would be ideal for farmworker communities and those with physical limitations who would benefit from a bike with an electric assist. The estimated startup cost for a library with a small fleet of e-bikes is about $282,000.”—Aric Sleeper, #MontereyCountyNow

Apparently, some millionaires moved out of the state. Imagine what would happen if EVERY state (and country) TAXED THE RICH PROPORTIONALLY!
#Massachusetts - Here’s how much the new ‘#MillionairesTax’ has raised this year (it’s a lot)
The tax on the rich is bringing in more than expected and will fund transportation and education initiatives.
By Beth Treffeisen
May 21, 2024"The '#MillionairesTax,' which went into effect for the first time last year, is set to bring in billions.
"State officials announced Monday that the surtax on high earners had generated more than $1.8 billion in revenue this fiscal year, with three months left to go, according to the State House News Service.
"This means state officials could have millions of dollars to spend on transportation and education initiatives.
"Any additional money raised beyond the $1 billion already budgeted would go to a reserve account, where state policymakers can ask for one-time investments in projects or programs.
"The SHNS reported that the revenue from the tax is already $800 million more than the Legislature and Gov. #MauraHealey planned to spend in surtax revenue for all of the fiscal year 2024.
"The Department of Revenue won’t certify the official amount raised until later this year.
"However, the estimates supported claims that the surtax would generate significant revenue for the state, despite fears that it would drive out some of its wealthiest residents.
"In 2022, voters approved the ballot initiative that levies an additional 4 percent tax on annual earnings over $1 million.
" 'Opponents of the Fair Share Amendment claimed that multi-millionaires would flee Massachusetts rather than pay the new tax, and they are being proven wrong every day,' Andrew Farnitano, a spokesperson for #RaiseUpMassachusetts, the union-backed group that pushed the 2022 ballot initiative, told the Boston Globe.
" 'With this money from the #UltraRich, we can do even more to improve our public #schools and #colleges, invest in roads, bridges, and #PublicTransit, and start building an economy that works for everyone,' Farnitano said.
"But Massachusetts has struggled with residents leaving the state recently, taking their taxable income with them.
"The announcement from the latest DOR quarterly report, described during Senate proceedings, is welcome news for budget writers who had been seeing declines in tax revenues for months.
"State tax collections have lagged behind projections for most of the 2024 fiscal year, SHNS reported, even after Healey implemented spending cuts.
"According to an analysis by the Pioneer Institute, Massachusetts lost $4.3 billion in adjusted gross income in 2021, 40 percent more than the prior year. The data shows that nearly 25,200 more tax filers had moved out of the state than moved in."

@nwchapman And this is announced right after #CBS did a glamor segment on their news doc program #SundayMorning promoting #Waymo this past weekend . . . 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I'm not a Luddite but I am one of those who say they'll never use an #AutomomousVehicle or #SelfDrivingCar no matter how safe they say they are.
There are other options & if I need to get somewhere & I can't use my own car to do so, I'll #Walk and/or take #PublicTransit and/or #RideSharing and/or #Uber or #Lyft instead. 🤷♂️

Yesterday we took the Kitsap Transit fast ferry across the water to see my family near Southworth and celebrate my mom’s birthday. It’s pretty convenient to take a bus downtown, walk down the hill, and zip across the water!
Our ride was the M/V Solano. With transfers it’s not really any faster than the 90 minute or so drive around to the peninsula but it’s definitely more chill than I-5 and 16.
Returning to the Seattle skyline featuring the Space Needle and Norwegian BlissWe’ve previously done the Fauntleroy-Southworth Washington State Ferry several times but that’s a little less convenient getting through West Seattle and costs more. My work ORCA pass happens to cover the fast ferry, and kids ride free.
One small downside is that the Southworth Ferry Terminal doesn’t yet have a separate slip for the fast ferry, so we had to wait for the big ferry to unload and pulled in a bit late.
On our way back we saw a bald eagle perched on the dock.
I always enjoy little bits of our transit infrastructure at work so here’s the M/V Kitsap pulling out of the Southworth Ferry Terminal.

If everyone is forced to drive, and most people don't want to do it, you're going to get bad drivers, distracted drivers, pissy drivers, ignorant drivers, psychotic drivers, etc. Don't require crazy to be put behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle as a minimum barrier of entry to public life. Leave it only to those who need or want to drive.

On this #TransDayOfVisiblity, I want to specifically highlight Bernie Wagenblast.
She is one of the famous announcer voices for New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority! (See video for demonstration)
From her wikipedia page: Bernie Wagenblast is a transportation journalist, radio personality and voice-over artist. She is the founder and editor of the Transportation Communications Newsletter. She also edits The AASHTO Daily Transportation Update, published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and hosts AASHTO's ETAP Podcast and the ITE Talks Transportation podcast for the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Today is the day our #tram project known as #RaideJokeri started operating with passengers. Launch was flawless, some very minor faults popped up in the first few hours which was expected to happen. I'd still call this day rather uneventful in the eyes of maintenance.
Of course I took my trip to #Keilaniemi and back, it is the first tram line to #Espoo. Now I patiently wait for #Vantaa tram.
