New month, new releases…

Just rolled the beta releases for Maps and libshumate for 51 beta:

Maps: 50.beta
libshumate 1.7.beta

and stable updates:

Maps 50.3 with a backport for allowing public transit routing from places further away from a routable OSM footpath (like inside a large building without indoor mapping), matching the behavior of the MOTIS web UI.

libshumate 1.6.3, 1.5.5 with a fix for a segfault when calling remove_all() with selected markers

Tomorrow start a trip in to the north of Portugal to meet up with folks for a 4 day, 170KM #bike trip called #pedalanças, from the town #Espinho to the Dance/music festival #tradidanças, \o/

Gotta pack the least amount of stuff possible.

And will also try to do the trip only using a #oneplus6 with #mobian and #phosh for maps (#gnomemaps or #puremaps or something else), #gps and #gpx tracks and pictures.

We will see how that part goes :)

Now that we have a preferences dialog in Maps (for handling offline downloads), I played a bit with moving the other settings we already had in the main and layers menus into a decicated “General” page in the preferences dialog.

I dusted off an old idea to show duration for walking segments of public transit itineraries that I played with a year or so back.

Now that the list is using flowboxes, which can wrap contents to multiple lines when needed I think it will probably look better:

Just rolled the latest release tar balls for Maps (51.alpha) and libshumate (1.7.alpha) for the GNOME 51 development cycle

And Maps 50.2, and libshumate 1.6.2 and 1.5.4
for the stable branches

Including, among others, the offline map download support and public transit departure boards for Maps 51.alpha and improvements to vector map sources for libshumate which will enable some nice refactorings in how build the vector map style later on, among other changes

@pocketvj not the version I was using. But #gnomemaps very recently added initial support for offline map tiles:

It's getting there soon :)

No gpx track (cause I forgot to record :x )

A short bike ride close to the Tagus river in #lisbon.

But for the lulz of it used #gnomemaps for navigation on a #oneplus6 with #mobian and #phosh and using the #gps .

And yes the blue dot did moved accurately, and I was slow :)

Just a heads-up for those doing development on Maps (e.g. running from within GNOME Builder), or running the nightly Flatpak release. Currently there is a regression in GJS preventing applications launching Gio.Application using runAsync().

As a workaround, one can (temporarily) edit the flatpak manifest in the git clone (when playing with development), or use the --runtime=50 flag (with flatpak run) when running the nightly. Until this gets resolved.

Thanks to hard work by @flyingpimonster Maps now supports downloading map areas for offline use!

This has been a long-awaited feature and will finally be available in GNOME 51.

Another little “side project”: putting some more on Sweden (“färgläggning”)…

Have spent some time lately to extend (and refactor) the Lua script that I wrote some time ago for post-processing the GTFS data from Trafiklab in Transitous. Especially in Kiruna, the likelyhood of the mapping from line name to color seems extra stable, and less likely to change… 😄

Got a bit further on the departures/arrivals view feature.

Now shows a toggle group with tranportation modes available for the selected station/stop (when there are multiple modes served at the location) allowing filtering what to show.

Made some more progress on the implementation of the “stoptimes” API from MOTIS in Maps.
Now actually showing departures (or arrivals) in the place details when clicking on a “public transit-type“ place (station etc.), when there's data available in Transitous.
The rows still only shows the transit mode icon and line number/name (e.g. missing time, destination and so on…)

Does anyone know of the general development of #navigation software for #mobile #Linux devices like the #Librem5 ?
#PureMaps somehow runs, but it is not a great experience performance wise and the development is not super active anymore. I saw a discussion once that #OrganicMaps also tries to make a mobile Linux version, but I can't find any update there either. Are there any plans for #GnomeMaps to add navigation features?

Cool that Transitous now has schedule data for transit in Tbilisi, Georgia. In a couple of weeks it's exactly 15 years ago I was there on a work trip just about a month after started working for PrimeKey!

Would be kinda nice to visit again.

(I wanted to get a trip with one of the gondola (aerial way) lines for the screenshot, but got no results for that (I think they should be in the timetable data)

Rolled the releases for GNOME 50 today (a bit early, but I'll be busy all day tomorrow):

Maps 50.0
libshumate 1.6.0

and also a (small) bugfix 49.5 on the (old) stable branch.

Didn't yet do a write-up about the new stuff, guess that'll have to be done sometime soonish, too… 😎

Now that the new release of MOTIS with translation support has been deployed for Transitous, I implemented support for passing the language of user's locale(s) to the API.
This shows an itinerary rendered in Japanese and in the second example with romanized names (this relies on translation.txt being present in the corresponding GTFS feed data, though).

Found this old poster I hadn't had up on the wall since moving from the apartment I used to live in until 2009.

Featuring a panoramic “aerial photo-like” view of central Uppsala from 1994 drawn by Madgalena Koronyńska in 1994.

I also tried reproduce the view in Maps.
Some things have changed in 32 years (like the house we live in now was some 15 years before being built.

Just rolled beta releases of Maps and libshumate (50.beta and 1.6.beta) for the upcoming GNOME 50 release, and also stable releases (49.4, 48.9, and 1.5.3, 1.4.1 respectively) before traveling to Brussels for FOSDEM tommorow evening.

One improvement in 50.beta consists of showing more text from the article extract from Wikipedia in “desktop mode” when there is more space.

Officially “made use of” the year 2026 yesterday, when updating the copyright year in the about dialog for Maps.

And also, btw added a source file with copyright year 2026 some week ago (a specialization of the Place class for handling “stop places” from Transitous/MOTIS, enabling to mark places from public transit itineraries as bookmarks/favorites.

Just tagged Maps 50.alpha and libshumate 1.6.alpha for GNOME 50:

Containing, among others, the new sidebar redesign, public transit journey redesign, using Transitous for all public transit routingm, and porting of UI templates to Blueprint for Maps.

And for libshumate the option to compile without the vector renderer has been removed, the vector renderer has gained support for "global-state" expressions.
