#3ter10ter_bremen #meineMusik

  9. #WritersCoffeeClub 3/10: How do you feel about spoilers?
    I think there’s a clue in the name…
And even when writing about a really well-known book, we should remember that there will always be people who are new to it, and don’t yet know that Lizzy and Darcy ultimately do… oops, nearly gave it away there.

  16. CW: Sensitive content - history, war, genocide, starvation, graphic image

History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

This is Lizzie van Zyl. In May 1901, aged seven, she died of starvation and typhoid in the British concentration camp hospital at Bloemfontein. The word "concentration camp" entered the world's vocabulary here, in the Anglo-Boer War.

Britain's scorched-earth campaign burned Boer farms and herded the women and children into tent camps, around 45 of them. Families of men still fighting were put on reduced rations, as punishment.
About 26 000 Boer civilians died, most of them children. In separate camps for Black South Africans, at least 14 000 more.

The dead children became the founding wound of Afrikaner nationalism. In 1948, the generation raised on that grief voted the National Party into power and built apartheid.

The descendants of people locked in camps by an empire built one of history's most merciless systems of racial domination.

Rhyme the stanza again, a few decades later: Europe's Jews ghettoed, starved, worked, gassed. Six million murdered in the camps. The survivors swore "never again." The whole world swore it with them.

    And today? Gaza.
Per the UN: at least 22 000 women and 16 000 girls killed between Oct 2023 and Dec 2025. Famine officially confirmed. Nearly the entire population displaced, most of them several times over. History doesn't repeat itself. It rhymes. And the meter is always women and children.

Britain has never apologised. At the 1999 centenary the Queen offered only "sadness" no apology and no reparations was offered, ever.

    Footnotes:
    1. The ~26 000 figure is Boer/Afrikaner civilians, roughly a quarter of the Boer child population at the time, which is why it cut so deep into the national psyche.
    2. Figures are sourced from the War Museum records and Wikipedia's documentation of the camps, the UN Women casualty report (April 2026), and the UN Commission of Inquiry findings.
