The actual meat of the paper is "we got some very slow distributed inferencing working under laboratory conditions with access to homogenous equipment that was bought specifically for this purpose and was already under our control". We've had self-replicating worms since the 1980s at least. This is all very basic stuff. There's absolutely no reason for deploying a distributed LLM as part of this setup.

  10. Title for the win. :-)

Here "strategically deployed" is the kindly way of saying "fishing for chumps."

"We ask: Why and how do far-right parties politicize cultured meat? We make three main contributions: First, we show that far-right parties link their opposition to cultured meat to a broader cultural struggle over national identity. Second, we demonstrate that the issue is strategically deployed to appeal to rural voters and organized farmers, often in competition with center-right parties. Third, we argue that far-right opposition to cultured meat has important consequences, influencing center-right parties, shaping policy outcomes, and thus impeding the potential breakthrough of an emerging food technology."

  13. CW: 🥓🤬 bacon racism

    🥓🤬 #Adnan from #DanmarksRadio interviewed #JeppeBlochNielsen, head of #DanishPigProducers about #racism. It is unbelievable.

    ▶️🇩🇰 Video in Danish: veganism.social/@veganguide/11

    📜🇬🇧 Translation:
Jeppe: I feel that we as pig producers are victims of racism.
Adnan: May I please tell you: You're Danish speaking skills are excellent!
Jeppe: So are yours, so there's not a big difference.
Adnan: I'm not a racist. I have friends who are farmers.
Jeppe: I'm the exact opposite of racist ...
    [Loud scream from pigs]
Adnan: Not to be racist but there seems to be someone who is protesting that you will make them into bacon? Could you please explain to our viewers why you are the victim of discrimination and not your pigs?
Jeppe: That is because I feel that we as conventional pig producers are a minority. When we are being shamed specifically then I feel that is racist towards me as a pig producer.
Adnan: I feel the same way. Just because I'm brown, people think I get economic support from the state. It's the same with you, except that's not prejudice.
Jeppe: That's massive prejudice. I receive zero economic support for my pig production.
Adnan: You don't receive economic support?
Jeppe: I get zero kroner in subsidies for my pig production.
Adnan: Do you get anything else?
Jeppe: Not for my pig production.
Adnan: Do you get anything else?
Jeppe: I receive EU subsidies for my plant production.
Adnan: So you are on part-time subsidies?
Jeppe: To the extend that I have to provide cheap food for the Europeans.
Adnan: I've noticed that all your pigs are skin-coloured.
Jeppe: Yes, but some of them tried to make themselves dirty so you wouldn't feel excluded.
Adnan: Feel excluded, what do you mean?
Jeppe: Rolling around in shit and in hay.
Adnan: What's that got to do with me?
    Jeppe: ...
    Adnan: What?
    Jeppe: I don't know.
Adnan: But you said they made an effort for me by rolling around in shit. Could you explain?
Jeppe: So we wouldn't feel excluded.
    Adnan: "We" ?
Jeppe: We. As i told you, I have employees and sows who roll around ...
    Adnan: ... in shit?
Jeppe: No, it's not shit. It's filth. Not the employees.
Adnan: Do you think these here like you?
Jeppe: Yes, I'm absolutely certain they do.
Adnan: I think they like me more. Because I don't turn them into bacon. Also, I don't eat them.
    Jeppe: Well, that's true.
Adnan: I can see here that you practice circumcision.
Jeppe: Some of them have had the end of their tail docked.
Adnan: Is that for religious reasons?
Jeppe: It's a necessary evil for preserving animal welfare.
Adnan: Being circumsied myself, I can tell you there's no harm in that.
Jeppe: I can only observe that there are some politicians on ...
Adnan: You should try it. It didn't hurt. What I think is the most racist in this is that if you were so heavily regulated then someone will be losing their jobs. Those are Eastern Europeans and Africans ...
    Jeppe: That is racist.
Adnan: ... because your employees are ..?
Jeppe: ... also not Danish. I have some dark skinned employees.
    Adnan: Dark how?
Jeppe: If the lights go out, they have to remember to smile.
    Adnan: And that's not racism?
    Jeppe: Exactly.
Adnan: Because you are the victim of racism?
    Jeppe: Exactly.

  15. Roz bel khalta is one of Egypt’s festive rice dishes: rice scented with cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, folded with browned gizzards, toasted nuts and plump raisins.

Its name means “rice with a mixture,” and the contrast is the appeal — savory meat, warm spice, sweet fruit and crunchy nuts, often served alongside roast lamb, beef or poultry.

Yea dude, we remember. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. If Omar has done something wrong, she should pay the price. If this is trumped up charges to serve as red meat for your base, then we all just go back to laughing our asses off about you people. You fucked around until the midterm noose was around your neck and now you have to do something like this to try and make up for your major upcoming losses. Omar is going to be just fine, but you dick heads are actually going to have the law take you out. The REAL LAW, not Kash Patels goony eye gang.

Someone’s (obviously a tourist) graffiti-ed vegan messages all across town; and the messages get increasingly conspiracy theorist.

Other than the message, which I largely agree with (we should eat less meat), what makes people think they should go to other countries and graffiti their messages all over?

If anyone from the developing world did that in your countries, we’d be arrested immediately.

  18. CW: AI made maths proofs

They tell me that Open AI have solved four hundred previously open maths problems this week.

The news media, and even the mathematicians, seem quite credulous about it.

No way to know how many of those will really stand up in the end. Lots of proofs turn out not to be really proofs coz they have a mistake, and AI is quite good at discovering mistakes as well as now apparently discovering maths.

Some of them are counter-examples that prove the conjecture is false and those are gonna be good at last. Machines can check it.

Some have other types of mechanical machine-checkable proof, which is interesting in that we can all believe the checker-machine: coz it's deterministic and understandable.

We can't trust the machine that isn't deterministic or understandable as much though.

GPT says these things are true. Now maths people have to check, because OpenAI staff aren't expert mathematicians either, mostly.

Some of the 400 proofs will fall, I'm sure.

But if a machine can prove a thing to itself, but not explain it to any person, is it really doing maths? Even if it's correct more often than people are? Or is doing maths more about making meat understand a thing?

    🤔

I'm sure I can't tell if the proofs are true or not. No point me reading them. Mostly won't even understand the question. The boundary of my meager meat-mind's maths-understanding was around barely-degree level.

Can the academic discipline continue as one which is devoted mostly to trying to understand the output of a machine writing about maths, which is mostly right but nobody can really tell without an entire academic discipline trying to check.

In other words, mathematicians now also face a spam problem familiar to many github project leads.

  19. I know everyone believes Trump hasnt shifted over to his dementia side yet but the presser this morning shows he has. He can barely pay attention to the questions asked and has to ask to have them repeated. In and of itself not a big deal but the thing is, he cant grasp the intent of the question so he waves his arms and laughs it off and then gives some very rudimentary answer. He is stuck in his timeline now. He doesnt have a way to know what on that timeline is far away or close up.

It's like life on a ruler of 12 inches. You know every inch of that twelve inches. There is no depth behind those 12 inches because your brain doesnt carry depth. It only knows the surface 12 inches. There is no "time" on those 12 inches makes new events very hard to shove onto that 12 inch ruler so basically they dont and you just go back to saying what is in those 12 inches, over and over and over again. You hem and haw and laugh a bit nodding your head and gesturing right before you go back to those 12 inches because that is the entirety your mind can hold. Its going to get worse.

Trump is aware he has to speak to the gaggle. He remembers how to approach them. how to look stately. How to point at them when he wants to have them speak to him. How to lean back and ponder whatever was said which he really didnt hear aside from some key words. Then he does his little statement which used to have some meat but now is just the same few words you hear out of him every time he talks about that subject. Today, he laughed and pointed at multiple people asking him questions and then simply didnt answer the question and went to point at the next person. He will come in and out of this phase and all the sudden just be normal Trump, whatever that is. But he is checking out more and more and in public now.

  20. Carnation – Symphony in Flesh Review By Kenstrosity

Death metal is one of my favorite things on Earth. One of the coolest and most invigorating innovations in heavy music, death metal’s focus on rhythm, groove, heft, and serrated distortions in every instrument calls to something primal and primordial. Belgian five-banger Carnation understand that primal call perhaps too well, taking a classic formula that should’ve diminished significantly in returns by now and vitalizing it with piss, blood, and vinegar. Over the course of three consistently high-quality records they’ve defied every phenomenon of nature that kills with time. Fourth onslaught Symphony in Flesh poses yet another threat. What fresh hell awaits?

WIOLENCE, that’s what! While Cursed Mortality took on a more dour character despite its tightened and streamlined songwriting, Symphony in Flesh is just mean. With no regard for human life and a complete lack of sympathy for the weak of body and will, Carnation reprises the punky and thrashy energies that imbued early works like Chapel of Abhorrence, while retaining the melodious flourish and smooth finish of Cursed Mortality. This in turn creates an interesting balance across 43 minutes of feral theatrics and viscous blood spatter. A wide array of songwriting tacks steadily shift Carnation’s sound as Symphony in Flesh’s runtime progresses. This strategy gives the whole a sense of dynamic movement and epic scale while dealing mortal blows left, right, top, and bottom—an apt representation of the album’s title. There’s no escape, and a gruesome death is guaranteed, but you’ll be transfixed on your way to your maker.

Few things in life are better than a well-placed “BLEGH,” and what better place to “BLEGH” than right at the beginning? Thus, Symphony in Flesh unleashes with the stellar opener “Blackmouth,” instantly opening a yawning pit to hell in a barrage of caustic riffs and feverish double-bass grooves. This is everything that death metal should be in a nutshell, but Carnation make sure their recipe has extra sauce. Follow-up “Flesh-Eating Frenzy” might be the most fun I’ve had with the genre all year, boasting a nasty beat that whips my spine around like a proper flail. Big grooves that I now wholly associate with Carnation’s trademark riffing style characterize stomping offenses “Kingdom of Dreams” and “Boundless Pathways,” but thankfully don’t ape Carnation’s former iterations. Instead, they carve trenches for themselves deep in the whitewater current of blood and sinew that Symphony in Flesh disrespectfully gorged out of the flesh of the earth itself. Such irrigation then provides ample sustenance to support blackened tremolos and squawking melodies that personify “Twisted Visions” and the remarkably well-paced 11-minute closing epic “Legacy of the Forefathers.” This final expulsion itself is a testament to Carnation’s continuous improvement as songwriters. It shouldn’t work at all, and yet its encapsulation of everything that Symphony in Flesh exhibits into one visceral container guarantees a righteous pathway to this symphony’s glorious end.

Carnation’s collective performance on Symphony in Flesh is fucking vicious. It’s rare that HM-2 death metal in the modern era tastes freshly killed as it did in the early days, but this does. Grotesque and writhing with guts, Symphony in Flesh is a monstrous record where guitars blaze everything to cinders and psychotic roars rattle every bone to dust. Drums pound muscle into slurry, and even the massively distorted and clunky bass tone makes quick work of tenderizing organ meat. There’s little to ask of Carnation here. Nonetheless, nitpicks arise. There’s an argument to be made against the merit of an albeit brief quietude in the back end of “Legacy of the Forefathers.” That couple of minutes and change could be cut out with no immediate danger to the whole. “Labyrinth of Silence,” while immensely groovy, also takes a little too long to kick into high gear. Even after trimming that section down, it’s still the “weakest” offering on the menu. Compared to its neighbors, it’s just a bit too lackluster to find its footing and fumbles the ball slightly. Thankfully, “Towards Death” scoops the ball right back up and shoves me back into the fray without any concern for my safety.

Safety is overrated when the only thing that matters in life is death metal. Carnation understand this mantra, and embody it with Symphony in Flesh. Without changing the classic formula, Carnation embarrass an entire army of revivalists by being one of the only bands in the buzzsaw persuasion to feel alive and imminently dangerous. I fear for my life every time I spin this beastly thing, and I rarely feel such joy in conflation with that immutable survival instinct. Yet, I’m chomping at the bit for another taste!

  21. It’s another restless morning for me. Up at 4 am to the last vestiges of this ill-behaved plague. A little bit of mindless vidya accompanied by a good audiobook.

Kiddo found me at the computer and begged for food, some three hours later. He’s playing his own vidya while he relaxes before going off to have his head cranked open and knowledge poured in.

The birds are singing outside, so the book is on pause and the windows are open.

    Caramel mocha in hand.

    It’s my second.

Today had better be a good one, or else I’m going to feel quite cheated by this sleepy yet wonderful morning.

Let’s make today a good day.
