  1. Any kind of work which doesn't produce immediate products such as political science, philosophy, history, and even mathematics science and medicine (including psychiatry) will be overwhelmingly paid for by the people with the most money and those will be the hegemonic institutions - therefore these oft self described scientific and unbiased fields will actually have a heavy bias towards protecting the hegemonic source of their funding. Money ruins everything it touches.

One such example of this is institutional carnism expressed through science and medicine as talked about by melanie joy

But my broader takeaway from this thought (which is probably not original and something that gramsci talked about) is that no space within the system is free from hegemonic cultural capture - integration with and especially power within the system implies some kind of moral compromise that's a reason why anarchists propose dual power structures instead.

P.S. Philosophy of maths can have political connotations in the metaphysical assumptions it does or doesn't make

(and I’ve probably missed some who have also answered here)

No idea why but @PaulNickson must have had a reason to tag me 😄 Thanks, because interesting and relevant thread.

Methinks that no single of the mentioned -isms is to blame, they all go hand in hand, and IMO we need to add #carnism to the list also – there must have been a time when most of us could have quit exploiting and murdering the other animals. Or is that time now? At least for most of us?

(Not talking about indigenous people who might not have – subjectively or objectively – other ways to feed themselved and their kin.)

And NO, @IndyRichard, def. not “too negative”.

  5. Perhaps those 70% think their personality will disappear when they stop the meat-eating?
Carnism is very strong and meat is linked to masculinity by society in an absolute absurd way…

  6. @Tutanota

I am a paying subscriber of several years for tutamail and I am also an antispeciesist vegan

I like tutamail because of the commitment to renewable energy[1] and quantum resistant encrypted private emails; put the two together and there is nothing else like it I can think of.

I have a suggestion - I noticed that the junkmail folder is called "Spam" and features an icon of a bug.

"Spam" is a speciesist phrase as I outline in this short post
    veganism.social/@ambiguous_yel

and "Bug" to symbolize a pest/error is speciesist as I explained in this short post
    veganism.social/@ambiguous_yel

My suggestion is to rename this folder to "Junkmail" or equivalent and change the icon to perhaps a crossed circle icon or an exclamation mark or a halt hand gesture or if you wanted to be jokey about it a toilet

If there was a more appropriate place to submit this feedback I couldn't find it

  7. "I got a disease the other day and I was going to go to the doctor until I realised its the circle of life and death and decomposition is a natural part of the food chain. It would be ridiculous to go and stop all disease in nature that would be bad for the environment because it would cause overpopulation. So I'm going to do the natural and sustainable thing and let myself die"

This is how a lot of carnists sound.

Life and death of other animals is in our hands, and we have a unique responsibility to wield that power with care and selflessness

    "
    >This is the way things are.
    You can't change nature.

    >Change *is* nature dad, the part that *we* can influence - and it starts when we decide
    " - Ratatouille, 2007

I know that I care about the killing of animals and I also don't believe that investing in meat alternatives is the best way to save them

It is possible for someone to just genuinely disagree with you about a strategy, especially towards a goal that you have no personal interest towards.

I fight speciesism the root of carnism.

My activism is not limited to discussions but it would always be a bigger part that investing in technology

Imagine if you told a slavery abolitionist they need to invest more in automated machinery to change the economic reality and make slavery unprofitable - Firstly it wouldn't change fast enough and there would be no guarantee you could even do it ever, secondly it wouldnt address the core of the rot which in this and my case would be bigoted discrimination

  9. @benroyce

I hear this a lot from carnists "I have no problem with veganism" and its like a kind of faux middle ground whereby because you respect my position I have to respect yours.

Simply no. Oppressing other creatures is not something I tolerate, and I really don't care about your approval of my position on that

Oh you don't object to me not killing innocent defenseless creatures? That's big of you.

  10. I consider myself an extremist, I don't tolerate speciesism or human supremacy in any form.

Carnism is rooted in speciesism, so for that and other reasons speciesism has to go

  11. @log

I think that name the trait is a better symmetry breaker against speceisism.

What trait does an abandoned baby human possess that a chicken does not that makes it ok to kill and eat the chicken but not the human?

    #Speciesism #Carnism #HumanSupremacy

  12. @log

Because there isn't a globalized industrialized mass slaughter industry for bonobos, billions of chickens are murdered every year
