John Bradley, the author of xv, has died. The program was one of the early versatile image viewers for X11 on UNIX like systems, and no Linux distro in the 1990s was complete without it.
If you want to try it out, it compiles very easily on modern Linux systems if you use this patched source:

I really want to stress that everything I have said thus far about open source sustainability and the origins of the #xv problem are not *solutions*. My proposals are *mitigations*. This is not a problem that can be “solved”. It is a complex of world-historic economic allocation problems that needs to be addressed in the midst of a ton of other parallel and interacting crises. None of these activities will solve the problem, but we must do something — a lot of somethings, actually — regardless.

I really can only shitpost about the #xv debacle because the whole thing just makes me tired and sad. Anyone paying even a tiny bit of attention to the conversation about open source sustainability could have told you this was inevitable. And now we're watching people blame a volunteer trying to step back, and rehashing all the same old tired arguments we've been having literally for decades. It's just so tired and predicable and boring and sad.

So the #xv lesson learned is to create a library that is backdoored and simply wait until #systemd integrates it?
