On Tuesday, Hurricane Polo broke records and became one of the strongest storms ever recorded on the planet. With so much energy being used at once, Polo has inevitably weakened some and is now a Cat 4 storm.
#HurricanePolo is expected to move away from the Mexican coastline over the next few days and move west-northwest before making a sharp turn to the north and then east, with a possible landfall in Baja California Sur as a Cat 2 storm on Monday or Tuesday.
As this happens, we are watching the upper-air pattern closely. A ridge of high pressure over central Mexico and a trough of low pressure digging into the West look to be the primary steering current for Polo.
Interestingly, the trough may help pull in moisture to #SoCal, with a chance of rain now in the forecast for Monday.

As an area of low pressure passes near #SoCal, our flow will turn briefly out of the south, helping to draw in moisture. It's not true monsoon moisture, but the setup is similar.

Sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are now 3.05 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, which surpasses the previous record by 0.3 degrees Celsius. The previous record was set in 2015, which, if you remember, was somewhat of an unremarkable El Niño year for Southern California.
I would caution you not to assume anything other than this regarding the news...
Weird things are going to happen with our weather this winter. It's pretty much a guarantee. We are already beginning to feel the effects of El Niño. What is not a guarantee is the frequency or intensity of storms that pass through our region. With that being said, major coastal erosion is a big concern of mine this winter. And with El Niño present, historically, that also could mean a wetter-than-normal winter.
Now is a great time to start making preparations for the "just in case." Whether that means cleaning the gutters, changing your tires, having an evacuation plan in case of flooding, or knowing your home's beach erosion risk, now is the time to do it while it is still sunny.
