A small area of low pressure to our south has lead to a brief increase in moisture and lift this afternoon. As a result, showers and thunderstorms blossomed over the San Diego County and Riverside County mountains. Storms peaked early, and a quiet rest of the evening is in store.
Hurricane Polo is expected to become a Cat 5 storm again later this evening before turning to the north. Landfall is now expected Monday in Baja California Sur with significant hurricane impacts expected.
The biggest impact locally will be some very large waves that could lead to both costal flooding and costal erosion. Both these elements are expected to peak early next week.
Ahead of #Polo, there is already a Beach Hazards Statement in effect through Sunday, that will likely be extended or a High Surf Advisory may be issued.

Sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are now 3.05 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, which surpasses the previous record by 0.3 degrees Celsius. The previous record was set in 2015, which, if you remember, was somewhat of an unremarkable El Niño year for Southern California.
I would caution you not to assume anything other than this regarding the news...
Weird things are going to happen with our weather this winter. It's pretty much a guarantee. We are already beginning to feel the effects of El Niño. What is not a guarantee is the frequency or intensity of storms that pass through our region. With that being said, major coastal erosion is a big concern of mine this winter. And with El Niño present, historically, that also could mean a wetter-than-normal winter.
Now is a great time to start making preparations for the "just in case." Whether that means cleaning the gutters, changing your tires, having an evacuation plan in case of flooding, or knowing your home's beach erosion risk, now is the time to do it while it is still sunny.
