  6. 😂 Ah, #Google, in typical fashion, announces a #change with all the detail of a fortune cookie: "403 Forbidden." 🎉 I guess we're supposed to read between the non-existent lines and figure out that #Widevine is going the way of the dodo in April 2027. Good luck, streaming services! 🚫🌐

I made a messy screen recording that shows failure with a first run.

  8. RE: tech.lgbt/@trashheap/115797721

@andersgo www/chromium should also do Widevine, when two other packages are installed, however it's not working for me at the moment.

    reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/

@trashheap does it work for you?

PS ignore the question, a second run of the chrome command succeeded.

  9. This is HUGE! Once the #widevine gets supported in other systems, especially #openbsd they will become much more viably for daily desktop usage.

  11. @sjvn what is this ??? The internet is not what it was supposed to be :angrymsn:

  12. My understanding is that #Widevine #DRM video playback generally works on #CalyxOS it is just broken right now on the #Fairphone? It should work on #Pixel devices? Anyone out there running CalyxOS care to confirm? #Android #Smartphones #DeGoogle #DeGoogled
  13. I've been out of the FOSS #android / #fossdroid game since like Lolipop

What's shifted in the world of Linux on android - #anlinux is a solid option now? How about tricking sites via mobile browser into thinking you are on a desktop - ie. To get widevine working to watch #defectivebydesign content without Google Play services ?

  15. So there's a new #Firefox based browser on the block that seems to aim to be like #Arc, 'cept Firefox rather than yet another #Chromium browser. Its biggest dealbreaker atm described in its FAQ is that it does not have #Widevine #DRM support - due to it costing 5000 USD, and because Zen is a #FOSS project with no real funding.

What I don't understand though is that the project says this issue affects only
#Windows and #macOS. What does that actually mean for #Linux - is Linux somehow able to access DRM protected content without the need to acquire Widevine license or something?

  16. Heh, #Netflix decided my TV is too old to support and my #RaspberryPi 5 still had issues installing #Widevine. When I last looked into this there was no Arm64 support. I nearly thought I'd have to buy a Bezoz-FireStick or an Apple TV box, but it seems like Arm64 is now supported!

I won't even have to use Chrome because someone already figured out how to work around the plugin not wanting to install it properly in #Firefox! reddit.com/r/firefox/s/RrhsBy3

Someone on Reddit (reddit.com/user/TapAppropriate) posted a direct link to a download from azurewebsites.net that's been taken down now too. The #InternetArchive has the files still at:
    web.archive.org/web/2024062421

Unfortunately I cannot verify whether those files/the link was the original file or a re-upload. But at least all files within `ICE REPRO.zip/Linker/linkrepro.zip' match the size (in bytes) of the originals as given in the listing on seclists.

The file download from there has the sha256 hash:

  24. Everything still applies here, but I spoke a lil too soon regarding #PrimeVideo though - I could open and login to the app, but couldn't play anything. I expect it may have to do with DRM - but I have already installed #Widevine L3 in the TWRP recovery mode, which I assume is for DRM purposes. Not sure what could be done to work around this.

  25. @dervishe Of course there's still no #FreeBSD version of that closed-source #widevine stuff, so it still pulls in some #Linux libs and stuff (from ports/packages) and you need to enable Linux compatibility ... but at least, these ports now allow to run *only* widevine in Linux-compat, so you don't need some full-blown #Ubuntu (or whatever) userland with some full-blown Linux browser any more.

  26. Hypothetical idea: could a #TPM chip on your motherboard be used to get #WideVine L1 on otherwise unsupported operating systems (I.E. #Linux)? Linux can only use WideVine L3 which isn't enough for some streaming services like #Peacock or #Amazon #PrimeVideo to play in HD. This is extremely stupid, but would TPM chips in theory allow this (assuming the companies in question even support it if it is possible)?

  27. This is incidentally the first time I realized Widevine DRM actually works on linux.

I initially tried to screen capture the video but that resulted in a broken file, so I had to record the screen with my phone. :D

  28. @Anniiii if I recall correctly: although it's from a Linux code base, this does not mean that it will run (on FreeBSD) in a way that allows Widevine to work as you want.

Correct me, please, if I'm wrong.

  29. @strypey
I recommend installing LibreELEC, and then the TVNZ+ addon. It should pull the dependencies with Widevine by itself, I believe. Sources are on GitHub repos, I believe (not Widevine, though, which is somehow extracted from Chrome or so.

    > If you have an alternative frontend (e.g. Kodi with the TVNZ+ addon) you don't need to log in or be tracked

Good to know, thanks. About time I had another crack at using Kodi.

Do you know if full source code is available?

  31. @davidoclubb @danctnix Are you watching Spirited Away in this screenshot? Does that mean that hardware video acceleration is working? What about #Widevine based sites like #Netflix? Asking for... a friend. 👀
