#Billionaires Have Their Fingers on the #KillSwitch. It’s Time to Take It Away.

"I read Heather Cox Richardson’s Letters from an American every morning. She’s one of the best at connecting the dots and helping us understand what’s happening in our country. But this morning’s post was particularly alarming. It highlights a serious and growing problem: a handful of the world’s wealthiest oligarchs have gained extraordinary control over the communications systems we depend on, giving them enormous power to influence politics, shape public opinion, and even affect the course of wars.
And we’re seeing just how dangerous that concentration of power has become. On Saturday, October 17, as Americans gathered across the country for No Kings events encouraging early voting, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta suspended the movement’s primary Instagram account. Organizers lost access for hours during one of their biggest voter mobilization efforts.
Meta apologized, blaming an automated mistake. Maybe it was. But that doesn’t change the fact that one corporation effectively shut down a major communications channel during a critical political event.
This isn’t happening only in the U.S., in Brazil, Reuters reported that internal Meta communications acknowledged restrictions that hurt President Lula da Silva’s campaign accounts while the company’s platforms recommended accounts associated with his right-wing opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro. Meta denies political favoritism and blames technical problems.
Again, we’re supposed to trust the company controlling the system to explain what happened.
But the most frightening example is unfolding in Ukraine. Reuters reported on October 16 that an order to slow Ukraine’s access to SpaceX’s military satellite communications system, Starshield, came from inside the White House.
The restrictions disrupted Ukrainian drone operations, including drones used to intercept incoming Russian attacks. Trump denies ordering the slowdown, and Musk says the military system is controlled by the U.S. government. Other reporting suggests that it was this was all Musk’s idea and Trump went along.
Think about that. While Ukrainians are fighting for their survival, the world’s richest man reportedly proposed restricting the very communications network his company built, and the President of the United States reportedly went along with it. Together, their decisions undermined an ally’s ability to defend itself against Putin’s aggression.
And this isn’t the first time. A 2025 Reuters investigation reported that Musk personally ordered Starlink coverage shut down in parts of Ukraine during a 2022 counteroffensive. #SpaceX disputed that reporting.
This is what happens when essential communications infrastructure becomes concentrated in too few hands. Whether the switch is controlled by a billionaire, an algorithm, or a president, the danger is the same. A decision made behind closed doors can silence political organizing, influence the flow of election information, or jeopardize lives on a battlefield.
We cannot keep treating these platforms as ordinary private businesses when they increasingly function as essential public infrastructure. Hopefully, after the Democrats take control next year, Congress will investigate these incidents, demand transparency, enforce meaningful accountability, and confront the monopolistic power these companies hold. We need competition, independent oversight, and enforceable protections against arbitrary restrictions on essential communications.
Innovation is wonderful. Giving a handful of oligarchs extraordinary influence over the world’s communications is not. Democracy cannot survive if billionaires and politicians get to decide who can communicate, whose message reaches voters, and whether a country can defend itself.
No kings in Washington. No kings in the billionaire-controlled tech empires that dominate our communications. It’s time to take back control of the systems our democracy, and increasingly the world, depends on."
