  1. Just stumbled on this 9min 2011 interview with Te Ururoa Flavell, then-leader of what was still called "The Māori Party";

    podomatic.com/podcasts/rdu985f

Mainly about their policy to make it compulsory for publicly-funded schools to offer teaching of Te Reo Māori if anyone in the school community wants it. Which seems eminently reasonable.

The tripping hazard here is the word " compulsory", a tinder word in any political proposal.

  2. This is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone on here can help me.
I have always been fascinated by the different types of #Haka, and I love to read the meaning behind them. I saw the Haka that #TeamNZ did during the #WinterOlympics for their medalist and didn't recognize it. Turns out it's called Pou Tangata, and it's specifically for Team NZ? I can't seem to find the actual words or a translation anywhere, so if anyone knows it, I'd love to know what they're saying!

  3. Matapēhi day one:
Learnt(ing) new words for "valiant warrior," "revolt," "fight with losses on both sides," "attendant," "long wooden trumpet," and "fog," and a couple others.
The kupu, respectively: mumu, whana, haupārua, hāwini, pūkāea, kohu.

This is shaping up to be a great book.

  4. I've recently been watching Te Kauwaka (Avatar the Last Airbender in te reo Māori).

Comprehension: 8/10. I understand most of it, but there are a few times where I don't know a word or two, or a sentence's grammar structure is a bit new for me.
Focus: 7/10. Sometimes my mind can drift, but I'm generally quite focused while watching it.
Effort: 4/10. This series is relatively easy, but I do have to use some effort to understand it all.

All in all it's enjoyable and a great resource for learning the language.

  5. Another two months, another 50 hours, another learning te reo blog post!

I'm still amazed that I can watch tv or read the news in a different language, understand most of it, and learn from it. Combine that with vocab and grammar study and it's going well!

  6. I stumbled across 'pae kare' recently, and I've been having trouble with the kupu 'pae' for quite a while.
    maoridictionary.co.nz/word/485

Was trying to figure out what it meant, and I knew 'kare' as a word to address a friend but still didn't get it. I then found this:

    maoridictionary.co.nz/word/486

and realised that it was just a transliteration of the exclamation 'by golly' -> 'pae kare' 😂

  7. Near the end of June, I reached the milestone of 150 hours learning te reo Māori. My current goals are to do consistent practice, build up comprehension in reading and listening, and steadily increase my vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.

  8. There are so many different kupu mō staring, with very slightly different definitions. If it ends in 'tē' there is a high chance it might be one of these kupu.

  9. Comprehensible Māori

I've compiled a list of TV show & movies for beginners to intermediates to watch in te reo Māori. Any suggestions are welcome.

  10. I've written a new blog post summarising my te reo learning progress in the past month, and shared my small goals for the next month.

    > "The main problem I’ve had this month was consistency in doing listening and reading immersion. Even though I find them enjoyable, other things take up my free time and I didn’t spend as much time as I want to."

  11. 100 days ago, I made a commitment to learn te reo Māori. Now, I've published a blog post to explain my approach and progress so far.

  12. Māori Made Easy is a great resource, but due to all the other things I've been putting time into to learn #TeReoMāori, my 20 minutes of MME end up completing two or three day's worth each time (I also read most out loud). For normies, it says it takes 30 minutes per day.
And this is a good thing - it speeds me through it so I get to more challenging things while still ensuring I practise these basics. I'm on W15 of the book after 7 weeks of study 😂

  13. So I'm finally doing almost daily journalling, a habit I've wanted to do for ages - all because of my #TeReoMāori study! I can put together simple sentences in all tenses, so my writing practise is translating those short diary entries into Te Reo. I use Te Aka for new vocabulary and a couple sources to help with grammar I'm not sure about.
I then read several of them aloud, to practise pronounciation but also just getting used to the language.

  14. When you realise the 1000 most frequent word list in Te Reo Māori is acually 980 words:

  15. #teReoMāori #teReoMaori #helpWanted #boostsWelcomed

I've been trying to find the kupu for "elf" in te Reo Māori - not fairy folk, but Santa's Workshop helpers.

Te Aka doesn't have anything, and nor do any of the other channels, so I'm hoping someone has a puka ki ngā tamariki mō Kirihimete with it in?

    Or a fluent speaker?

  16. At my Reo Māori tutorial on Thursday, I was asked by the kaiako to do the mihi tuatahi.

And was complemented on my pronunciation.

This is huge for me. I have a very (VERY) plummy (RP) English accent, and most of my lost marks in my aromatawai have been on my poor pronunciation.

I'm really proud of my progression, and realised I should share some of the good stuff instead of just Boosting everyone else's.

  19. Kia ora! Want to introduce tamariki to coding? Scratch is a free programming tool that makes it easy and fun to create interactive stories, games, and animations. With Scratch, tamariki can unleash their imaginations and build digital creations. Switch the language to te reo Maori and use commands like mēnā/mahia (if/then). Let's empower our future tech leaders with coding skills and celebrate our Maori language in the digital age. #ScratchCoding #TeReoMaori #KidsCanCode scratch.mit.edu

And Te Hiku guards that right voraciously by maintaining sovereignty over the Māori [language] data it has gathered over 30 years. “We don’t trade our values for anything,” [CTO Keoni] Mahelona says. “We aren’t going to sell the data or give it away for research." 26. Sitting in the afternoon sun, working through the #Rongo app, trying to get my #TeReoMāori pronunciation correct. Some struggling with turning what I am hearing to what I am saying.
Sometimes "what do you mean that is correct? I just made approximate sounds" and sometimes "oh that is what you said"

  27. This is the first time I've been heavily disappointed in the quality of Te Ara, the official Encyclopedia of New Zealand. This page, written in 2016 by one John Wilson, consists of an image of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Te Reo Māori, followed by a highly questionable translation into English;

  28. Here's a curly question; anyone here understand enough Mandarin Chinese and Te Reo Māori to tell me the Māori equivalent of "guanxi"?

The word "mana" is in the same ballpark, but as I understand it, that's more equivalent to "ahimsa" in the Ghandian context ("soul force"). "Utu" ("reciprocity") is a closely related concept, but my understanding of guanxi is that it's the respect a person has, and the favours they can call in, because of the reciprocity principle.
