  1. I just pushed an update to Emoji Anki ⤴️, with many goodies!
    - the WASM bundle is 20% smaller
    - the whole website data is now 98% smaller (yes, only ~2.1% of the original size)
    - there are less network queries before first render
    - there are less network queries to generate a deck, and it's a much smaller query (see above)
    - there was incorrect data when selecting a territory-specific language; it has been fixed
    - un-interesting languages (with no data) have been removed, only 110 languages remain.
    - all emojis are properly qualified so we get color versions for a few "legacy" emojis. For example, we'll display ⌨️ instead of ⌨, or ☺️ instead of ☺.
    - the Anki decks now have their own card template instead of duplicating html formatting in every card.

If you are an Anki user, try it now at: anki.emoji-on.top/ to learn flags or emojis in any language.

  2. Looking for software similar to linebyline.app that's local on my device like #Anki. Anyone working on something like this?

  3. @Aissen I thought this was one of the most common use cases, #Anki for language learning.

  4. Idea: make an #Anki deck for technical ear training. Recognizing waveforms by sound, recognizing absolute pure tone frequencies, recognizing EQ tweaks, recognizing filter types, steepnesses, recognizing compression, recognizing various effects like phaser, flanger, chorus, recognizing types of distortion, recognizing classic synth patches / sound design techniques like reese, FM growl, supersaw, acid, recognizing classic drum machine samples, recognizing reverb types and reverb tail lenghts...

  5. World Emoji Day is almost over. Why did I build Emoji Anki?

As often, it was a silly idea. I thought that learning language vocabulary with emojis would be fun. I was already using Ankidroid for spaced repetition; there were a few Anki decks with emojis, but most were incomplete, or did not allow chosing categories, there was (very) limited language choice.

Emoji Anki uses the publicly available Unicode CLDR data, that has annotations for every emojis, in 150+ languages.

As a side effect, another fun thing you can do with it is learn country flags.

  6. It's already World Emoji Day 📆 somewhere in the world!
For all the learners out there, I'm releasing EmojiAnki anki.emoji-on.top/, an Anki flashcard deck generator to learn languages with emojis!

  7. Anyone here using #Anki to learn languages? I'm looking for feedback on a project.

  10. I found its pretty easy to use #ai to create custom #anki cards. With like random values so each time its a different solution and you have to learn the way of solving the problem instead of just the solution

  11. I'm having a lot of fun working on and using my Anki companion app: Ankitron.

And I'm also very happy with the new website I built, where you can test the app without downloading it: ankitron.com

  13. Been learning Japanese and kanji for the past month or so via Mango and WaniKani. Started off the right way, learning all of hiragana and katakana via Anki before I did anything else.

Japanese is kind of hard, but kanji are hard. It's incredible to me that there's an entire country and culture where basic literacy requires you to learn thousands of characters, each of which have multiple pronunciations and often multiple meanings.

  14. Anki, the incredible spaced repetition software, has lots of settings that let you tweak your learning goals. One of them is the "desired retention". To quote the #anki documentation:

"The default value of 0.9 will schedule cards so you have a 90% chance of remembering them when they come up for review again."

Increasing the desired retention will increase the daily workload, because cards will be shown to you more often. Lowering the value will decrease the workload at the expense of forgetting more cards.

I keep desired retention at the default value and the screenshot from today's statistics shows why I tend to refer to Anki as "memory on demand". Retention is around 90% in most areas.

There are no limits to what you can learn with Anki as long as you are willing to put in the work. And in exchange, Anki will deliver the result you configured. It is open source and works across platforms.

16. Doing Esperanto flashcards and my very mature, grown up brain thinks "the word traduki has dookie in it 🤣🤣🤣"

  17. Excited to be at the @dariaheu #DARIAH2026 Annual Event, presenting The #AIncientTutor! 🏛️✨ Developed at the Historisches Seminar of @uzh with Felix Maier, our project reshapes how we learn ancient languages using #LLM support. 🤖📚 By integrating #RAG with NLP pipelines like #LatinCy and #OdyCy, the system dynamically guides learners through unedited primary sources without needing prior annotations.

📜🔍 The platform modularises translation into sequential tasks (identifying clause structures, predicates, & grammatical functions).

🧠💡 All linguistic data is consolidated into a structured, fully inspectable JSON format to encourage critical engagement rather than passive acceptance.

💻📊 Planned extensions include an automated vocabulary trainer for #Anki export, adaptive difficulty, and instructor analytics dashboards.

Comprehensible Input: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

#anki #flashcardapp

  22. Few things are as frustrating as doing daily Anki reviews and realising the amount of things I keep forgetting.

And yet, without Anki I would only know a small fraction of the Japanese words and characters I do now. And even these I would forget.

So, in addition to helping me memorise things, Anki has made me able to *overcome* frustrations and keep going regardless. And this ability translates nicely to all kinds of other areas in life.

Thanks to all the Anki developers for making me a better person.
