CW: Hammering urchins among new strategies to help Oregon's kelp forests bounce back
“
After a decade of urchins devastating kelp forests, researchers are finally fighting back — and bringing the literal hammer down.
…
All totaled, divers destroyed more than 260,000 urchins. The results shocked even the scientists.
… sea star wasting disease … killed billions of sunflower sea stars worldwide, a major urchin predator.

Raising Hungry #SeaStar Babies Is No Cinch https://baynature.org/article/raising-hungry-sea-star-babies-is-no-cinch/
"Not so long ago, you could count on #pycnopodia to devour #PurpleUrchins and keep them from eating too much #kelp. A decade ago, the mysterious wasting disease began plaguing #SeaStars, right around the time that a #MarineHeatWave struck... In the absence of their primary predator, urchin populations exploded. Since then they have mown across the sea floor unhindered, leaving urchin barrens where #KelpForests once flourished."

I was just wondering why I never see starfish in LA tide pools any more -- they were everywhere when I was a kid. It turns out that the population was devastated in 2013-4 by sea star wasting syndrome, a poorly understood phenomenon that can basically dissolve a sea star in just a few days.

Some dancing starfish for today's #inkyDays drawing. With my recovery from surgery, I can't really dance yet, but I'm dancing on the inside.
Here's an in-progress shot.
And that's a wrap for this month's daily drawings. In-progress and complete drawings for this month are now all posted for my supporters on patreon and kofi in this month's #inkyDays posts:

Is #underwater construction noise leaving scallops defenseless? https://www.whoi.edu/oceanus/feature/is-underwater-construction-noise-leaving-scallops-defenseless/
Pile driving repeatedly impacts the giant #scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-19838-6
"sea #scallops do a lot of clamming up when subjected to the loud underwater banging of pile drivers. If the #animals expend a lot of their energy doing that, they may not have enough left to respond to real threats... #SeaStars are one of the more common #predators #SeaScallops need to worry about."

Seascape #ecology in the vicinity of a Blake Ridge cold seep: Kellie Johnson et al. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2023.1198226/full
"The #ColdSeep ecosystem included #mussels, #clams, #tubeworms, and #BacterialMats capable of harnessing energy from the methane and sulfur-rich environment through symbiosis... Outside the cold seep, #SeaStars, #urchins, and #SeaCucumbers dominated. The seep also seemed to be a hotspot for certain #predators such as #octopus"
