  1. CW: Hammering urchins among new strategies to help Oregon's kelp forests bounce back

After a decade of urchins devastating kelp forests, researchers are finally fighting back — and bringing the literal hammer down.

All totaled, divers destroyed more than 260,000 urchins.

The results shocked even the scientists.

… sea star wasting disease … killed billions of sunflower sea stars worldwide, a major urchin predator.

  2. For today's #inkyDays drawing, I felt like drawing some dancing starfish. So I did.

    Here's an in-progress shot.

I also finished a floral-network piece, on watercolor paper. It's really nice to have more time for drawing again.

I've shared these in posts for my supporters on Patreon and Ko-fi (all levels):

  6. Discovery of #SeaStarWastingDisease cause sheds light on #kelp forest collapse and recovery phys.org/news/2025-07-discover

"This comes more than a decade after the start of the marine epidemic that has killed billions of #SeaStars... The 4-year investigation eventually pinpointed the microbial culprit: a strain of the bacterium #Vibrio pectenicida... The loss of #SunflowerSeaStars, which support #KelpForests by feeding on kelp-eating #SeaUrchins, has had widespread and lasting effects on ecosystems"

  7. "[I]n August 2025, after another year-and-a-half of work confirming and reviewing their findings, Gehman and her team have published a peer-reviewed study in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution identifying Vibrio pectenicida, a saltwater-loving bacterium that works its way into sea star fluids, as the likely “dominant pathogen responsible for sea star wasting disease.” Gehman’s team has tracked down the killer."

Fjord oceanographic dynamics provide refuge for critically endangered #Pycnopodia helianthoides: Alyssa-Lois Madden Gehman et al. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

  21. I was just wondering why I never see starfish in LA tide pools any more -- they were everywhere when I was a kid. It turns out that the population was devastated in 2013-4 by sea star wasting syndrome, a poorly understood phenomenon that can basically dissolve a sea star in just a few days.
