Small to tiny friends from this weekend on the coast. A little blob of goo in a tidepool was actually a beautiful nudibranch! Then the little sparrow-sized blob in a tree turned out to be cute pygmy owl.

For my last day in #Hawaii, I visited the #TidePools on the east coast of #Oahu (once someone told me there are easily accessible ones that don't require a long hike). I started off looking at all the skittish camouflaged critters and volcanic rocks, but it quickly turned into a cleanup effort when I saw all the fishing line tangled in the rocks and kelp.

I was just wondering why I never see starfish in LA tide pools any more -- they were everywhere when I was a kid. It turns out that the population was devastated in 2013-4 by sea star wasting syndrome, a poorly understood phenomenon that can basically dissolve a sea star in just a few days.
