🦐 The pistol shrimp's claw snaps shut so fast it creates a cavitation bubble that collapses at 5,000 K -- as hot as the surface of the Sun -- and produces a flash of light visible to the naked eye.
These 3-5 cm shrimp have one oversized claw equipped with a plunger mechanism. When the claw snaps, water is ejected at extreme velocity, creating a bubble that implodes with a shockwave that stuns prey. The collapse is so violent it generates sonoluminescence: a brief burst of light.
The snap also produces over 200 dB of sound -- among the loudest in the ocean per body size. When thousands live together, their collective crackling can interfere with naval sonar. The shrimp even evolved helmets (specialized carapace structures) to protect their own brains from the shockwave.
