  1. No #homelab nor #coding today, but filled my shed with #firewood because winter is coming.

All muscles are aching, but very satisfied now.

The #climatechange is making north pole warmer. That causes the #polarvortex to break. Last winter that very cold air sloshed over us. I burnt all I had, but should have had a bit more. I have electric heating but my 100 years old house starts dropping temperature inside when outside drops below -10c.

Going back to #homelab, I have #homeassistant automation to prevent water pipes freezing, which turns on a BIG heating fan in basement when it's winter, outside is below - 5c and basement is below +5c at least five hours. Guess what, some glitch triggered the fan few years ago during summer, probably because the little Zigbee temperature probe got low battery. After that I added those extra safeguards.

    5. The Surprising Ozone Paradox In a counterintuitive twist, the man-made ozone hole has actually shielded the Antarctic interior from global warming. The loss of ozone strengthens the polar vortex, trapping freezing air over the pole and preventing the rapid melting seen in the Antarctic Peninsula.

US weather to go nuts with blizzard, polar vortex, heat dome, atmospheric river all at once

    By SETH BORENSTEIN
    Updated 12:03 AM EDT, March 13, 2026

"Nearly every part of the United States is getting walloped by wild weather or just about to be.

"Days of downpours have begun in #Hawaii. The #Southwest will soon bake with day after day of record 100-degree-plus (38 Celsius-plus) #heat. Two storms will dump snow by the foot over northern #GreatLakes states. And the dreaded #PolarVortex will again invade the Midwest and East with soul-crushing #ArcticChill.

"This forecast of extremes comes as weather whiplash already hit much of the East. On Wednesday, Washington, D.C. residents walked around in shorts in record-breaking 86 degrees Fahrenheit (about 30 Celsius). On Thursday, it snowed.

" 'All of the country, even if you’re not necessarily seeing extremes, are going to see generally changing from cold to warm, or warm to cold to warm,' said meteorologist Marc Chenard of the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center in Maryland.

"Former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief scientist Ryan Maue said he expects extreme weather in all 50 states."

  8. On #PolarVortex instability science and the increase of Arctic cold air outbreaks, I posted a thread a while ago which was from Twitter as it was from 2021.
I just remembered there is actually this version of it outside X, so here it is:

  9. My daughter sent me the local forecast for her neighbourhood of High Park in Toronto. Wear a tuque if you are out walking the dog after dinner.

(Yes, it was corrected a few minutes later)

The Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge has always been a part of my life--from childhood photography trips, to sneaking cigarettes at night as a teen, to holding a seniors' reunion picnic there, two summers ago, with two dear friends. 11. Feels like -3F out there according to weather dot com.

It's going to get ten times colder over the next 30 hours.

Meanwhile I have a furnace-like #Dayenu sitting on my toes.

  12. 2/n...one overlapping context are the inherent instabilities of #PolarVortex excursions and their increasing frequency.
One aspect of #ClimateChange is that when and if the prior stable point shakes loose we can't reliably predict whether it bounces around local minima for awhile or rolls right into a nearest neighbor stable point. Both could be bad, but scenario one is probably not good very bad in terms of time for adaptation
